I have made many comments about other people’s profiles but since I have just up-dated mine I thought it wise to get some objective opinions. It seems we always like what we write so no matter how many times we re-write and re-read it still seems good. I try to be gentle when I review, please be the same. Having said that, please be honest.

Hi, Ron.

Do I have to be gentle?

I am interested in a lady who is honest, active, intelligent (note that does not require a degree) and shares at least some of my interests.

For as detailed a presentation as you make for yourself, I'm a bit surprised that the description of your ideal partner is not as equally detailed. What can a woman do that is something that you'll especially appreciate? It's one thing to say "I'd like to meet an intelligent woman" because, frankly, the vast majority of everybody here won't have terrible difficulty finding that they fit the bill, but it's quite another to say "And if you're as fed up with the Federal Reserve as I am, then we simply must talk". Bad example, I know, but I use it to show how much easier it might be for a woman to respond to something so specific, as opposed to "should be intelligent".

Karl,

I can take that, it was gentle! Yep most everyone feels they are intelligent and I do understand what you are saying but I do not want to tie a lady down to specific opinions on specific topics. If you have a suggestion as to how to say that better, I am all ears!!

Thanks, I do like your insight.

I find that, when people say they like to read, one thing that helps galvanize that in the listener's mind is if they say the name of a favorite book (or the most recent book they read). Philosophy, psychology, and history are broad topics, and someone reading that statement might hesitate, since they don't know what type of books you read. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? Guns, Germs, and Steel? The Secret? These are all possible answers, and if you gave a specific insight into yourself, I think that it would help to encourage responses and inspire curiosity.

And I like your new picture. It's not a formal "picture taking" moment. I hope it works well for you.

Komrade Karl also has a picture? I might just have to try this whole picture thing out!

Makikian,

Thanks so much. That is a great point! I had not thought of that. I will make a partial list within the next few days. Most people are not into those kinds of things, but I am only looking for one so I will go for your suggestion!

Yes the picture thing is important. Thanks for the comment on mine. I only have a few but try to change them now and then to keep up some interest.

All the best
Ron

Yes, he had to hide it for a while because (ahem) "someone" was stalking him.....

Anyway, Ron - I love your profile. If I were in your area/age group I'd be all over it. There's a lot of detail and enough information to know we'd have a blast. The only thing I could possible nitpick about is that - for someone of your experiences - it seems the Interests field is a bit light. Just my opinion.

Good luck!

You go first

Thank you for the complement and I agree about the interest field needing more it just seems to be the last thing I started to fill in. I will work on that.

Hi Ron

I liked your profile but......... (there's always a but eh!! )
Someone previously adviced that you should state what books you have read as your interests were quite varied .... but I felt your 'list' of authors/books was a bit long. I think you only need one or two examples of reading material you enjoy. I started to read it but skipped over it because there was just too many titles/names there

Then again that's just my opinion .. and maybe because I didn't recognise the titles/authors it was just a jumble of words to me

Thanks, I was thinking the same. I will cut that down somewhat.

I always enjoy reading your comments on this forum, keep it up!
I was going to send you a note to that effect but your age restriction blocked me.

I don’t think you have to change your settings. I think if you add me as a favorite or if you send me a message first, then I can contact you.

Can never have too many friends, you know.

Caroline,

I changed the list of books. I think it still gives the idea of what I like to read without the detail. Your thoughts?

Ron,

A few points about your profile.

Your headline needs work: of course you are Looking for a Lady.

The headline is a tip off about what I call an overly cerebrial profile. Yep, you are a logical engineer; even if you do like Plato and are perhaps a fundamentalist Christian (the broad red tie says that to me), Aristotal would scoff at that, no?

I think you could use more Date type interests or activities in your profile. Look at your interests closely, and see how many of those are "us" type activities. You have to lure her in with activities before reading and cuddling after all. Maybe some more traveling in the future, dancing or going to fairs and museums etc.

Finally, your profile needs a closing. You end it with an overly short description of the woman you are looking for. And yes, the reference to the degree not required is a bit elitist and will turn off some woman I am quite sure of that.

Good luck

You are likely right that I should come up with a more creative headline and I will think of a new one soon.

A profile is meant to reflect who a person is, so the fact that mine comes across as cerebral means that it succeeded. I would rather a lady knows that ahead of time. If she likes that great and wonderful. If she does not, then better that we not waste our time.

You did guess wrong on the fundamentalist Christian part, I believe in God from philosophical rather than religious reasoning and no, Aristotle had no opinion on Christianity. He had no opportunity to ponder that since he died long before Christ was born.

I agree with the need to list more interests and will do that soon.

I will have to think more on your last point. It seems to me that it would be more elitist if a degree were required.

Thank you so much for your thoughts and comments.

Karl,

I was going to send you a personal note but you only allow those from the fairer sex so I am blocked. We seem to think alike but express things differently, I like that, it can make for an interesting exchange. If you would care to chat, send a note. I do not block anyone. Us older gents must allow all the ladies to contact us you know, and I never thought of blocking any of the guys who might want to chat.

All the best

I think its perfect Ron! I would leave the comment about no degree required. Possession of a degree does not make a person smart or mean they are someone you can have an intelligent conversation with. Some men, especially younger men, discriminate this way and I find it very condescending. I am finishing my degree, but even once I have it, I would not date someone who would only be interested because I had a degree. I think that attitude is insulting to my intelligence. I was smart before the degree, and that should be valued as well.

Just a few quick thoughts for you since your thread got bumped:

I might consider removing or altering the "strengths" bit. I know that dating profiles are a bit like a resume, but really, I suspect that most potential dates aren't going to care that you have sales & negotiation training, for example. Not that it's not good stuff, but I just don't see it adding much to your dating profile.

I'm not sure how important religion is in your life, but generally, when you mention God in the second line of your dating profile, it's a big flag that religion is HUGE in that person's life. If you're open to relationships with women who are either not very religious, or are not practicing, then I would either remove this reference entirely, or relegate it to a note near the bottom of the profile.

Visually, I think your profile would just look a little more attractive if you turned some of these disjointed sentences and molded them into cohesive paragraphs. You're practically on a "one sentence per paragraph" rate there. That may just be me, though. :)

Oh, "leadership roll" should be "leadership role".

I know others might think this is a cardinal sin of profiles, but I personally would remove the entire last sentence. Why? I just don't think that's really doing anything to tell people what you are looking for. Your other sentences like "I like camping, if I have someone to camp with. Taking care of my yard, just getting out in the fresh air, going for walks. It would be better to have someone to walk with." do a better job of explaining that. Pretty much every woman out there thinks she is honest and intelligent (men do this too!).

Anyway, those are just a few thoughts...

Good luck!
