Were Letterman's sexual oriented jokes that he made about Sarah Palin's 14 year old daughter beyond your tolerance? Was his "sort of apology" as it's been termed in the media correct for the circumstances? Should Sarah turn down the invitation to be on Dave's show? If you were in Sarah's shoes, would you have called him out on this as she did? What next needs to happen with this?
I'd love to hear Califorum Fish's opinions.

| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 3:26:55 PM | My understanding is that Letterman was making jokes about them because of their hypocrisy: the 18 year old unwed mother pushing abstinence. I don't think Letterman knew which kid was Willow and which was Bristol-- they look alike anyway. I find her role as Abstinence Ambassador for the Candies Foundation ridiculous.
edit- I find the Palin response to be extreme--typical. Calling him sexually perverted and saying he "contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others."-- Oh puhleeze. Her kid was screwing around, got pregnant and has chosen to remain the limelight with her Abstinence Ambassador role for a cheesy shoe company (have you seen their ads? LOL talk about sexual exploitation )

| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 3:32:30 PM | | Didn't seem like anything out of the ordinary for late night TV. Palin should have ignored it if she wasn't amused, but then she wouldn't have gotten the chance to once again rally her troops to her defense. | |
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 4:00:50 PM | So if the joke was ok then why did CBS scrub it from the transcript...... I'm srry but TV and comedians are going beyond the limits in the last several years. And we ask what is up with our young people. Hey look at what we are teaching them through the idiot box....I guess there is a reason it was nicknamed the idiot box | |
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 4:01:36 PM | | Certainly a faux pas by Dave, not recognizing that it was the 14 year old. It was outside the boundaries of tasteful humor, and I haven't seen Palin's actual reaction statements so I don't feel capable of making any statements on whether her reaction was excessive based on media reports. I have learned not to trust a journalist, but to be able to pull facts from most stories. Hearsay rarely interests me. | |
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 4:28:22 PM | Was reading up. I forgot, Dave evidently has done work with unwed mothers before...you know, just helping them get their starts.... (Thanks for the borrow of the line Mr. Martin. "Best Fishes!")

"In November 2003 Letterman became a father at the age of 56 when his girlfriend Regina Lasko gave birth to a son, Harry Joseph Letterman, named in honor of Letterman's late father. On March 21, 2009, Letterman and Lasko married in Montana. "
Interesting twist to be picking on an unwed-mother's group spokesperson after having created one himself. (assuming that he thought he was picking on the older sister)
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 4:37:55 PM | The joke was in poor taste.
I will say this, Palin's older daughter had the guts to face national embarrassment by having a child out of wedlock. She could have taken the easy way out and had an abortion.
If Letterman made cracks about Obamas daughters he would be off the air.

If Letterman made cracks about Obamas daughters he would be off the air. Malia is age 9, Shasta is 6. My god, I hope Dave doesn't go that young!
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 5:34:19 PM | The double standard's as glaringly obvious here as everywhere else. Nothing bad may be spoken of the Anointed Ones--i.e. the members of whatever pet grievance groups the mass media have adopted and canonized. And if you dare to, count on looking for a new job. But if you're white, male, Catholic, conservative, etc., you're fair game for smearing with the most vulgar, disgusting filth. And seldom do the people doing the smearing pay any price for it. C. Prejean's foul-mouthed, lardass interrogator is a recent example.
Which is why I love Annie C. She says she goes after people partly for this very reason--she doesn't see why anti-American slobs who imagine they're hip and funny should get away with saying what they do. She seems to like nothing better than to watch them pout when, for once, they're on the receiving end of what they love to dish out.

Malia is age 9, Shasta is 6. My god, I hope Dave doesn't go that young!
So what do you consider that young....The daughter that was at the game is only 14. The daughter, Piper, that she had to explain the horrid tee-shirt comments to is only 8. So what do you consider too young...

| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 5:48:10 PM | Hi Killene, Yep, one could read it that way couldn't they......I'm sorry for not being more clear. I'm against any and all comments that are disrespectful as Letterman's were, regardless of age. Across the board, why are we always seemingly following those that want to tear others down in such ways, rather than follow those that would rather try to build us up from our current state? I was more intending my comment tongue in cheek in a backwards way asking ....so where does Dave draw his line? I'm glad that you caught the contrapositive implications of what I wrote. That's not what I intended. I hope this post here has helped clear that up. | |

| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 5:49:42 PM | Re: the double standard
I don't know. Rush is hard to beat when it comes to durogatory bombast. Then there's Hannity, Savage, and how many others?
There is no shortage of dismissive diatribe on both sides. What does any of it accomplish? If all we get out of a polticial conversation is a sense of being vindicated, we learn nothing.
What I want to know is: what is the kernel of truth buried in all that nonsense Rush & company spout? What of it is useful? Is it of any use to me that so and so is a such and such? Not unless I come into direct contact with them. You might not know or might not care to find out if there is a kernel of truth driving the partizans on the other side. But if they couldn't identify with something solid, why would they bother?
Here is what I'd like to know. In all of that self-righteous, self-serving, "entertainment" that Rush serves up, what is his point? What useful principles does he actually advocate? Are there any? If so, those of you who love to listen to him, to Annie, to Sean, and Mr. Savage, could you please cut through all the crap for the rest of us and tell us what those useful kernels of truth might be?
OT: Letterman should know better than to make explicit jokes about minors. There is no excuse for his misconduct. The fact that he might have referred to the wrong daughter is no excuse. He's got professional fact-checkers and a teleprompter. He screwed up big time. Keep the heat on him for that.
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 5:53:32 PM | Thanks Ace.
Rush is hard to beat when it comes to durogatory bombast. Did I miss that Rush said something about Obama's daughters????
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 7:07:39 PM | I think Palin & her first dude kind of over-reacted a little. They KNOW Letterman meant the older daughter...that is obvious. They are very shrill.
Letterman though is being a dope and prideful by not apologizing for getting his facts so screwed up! He should just say "Oh man, I blew chunks here. Woe is me, sorry Palin for getting confused which daughter I was degrading in my routine!"
I agree he should lay off politicians' kids. I think everyone should. Bristol is maybe 18 years old tops and she should not have to be painted with a big fat scarlet "S" on her chest by Letterman just because he wants to pick on her mom.
He is funny sometimes but right now HE SUX!
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 8:34:19 PM | A sort-of-apology from a sort-of-comedian. Sort-of-appropriate.
The last clip I saw of Letterman, Paul Mooney was going on a tirade and Letterman just kept doing his phony laugh. He's embarrassing to watch.

| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 8:35:48 PM | IMPORTANT VIRUS WARNING!!!!!!
If you get an email titled "nude photos of Sarah Palin," don't open it. It could contain a virus.
If you get an email titled "nude photos of Nancy Pelosi," don't open it. It could contain nude photos of Nancy Pelosi.
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 9:23:40 PM | Letterman made a joke about Governor Palin who was in town with her daughter who happened to be 14. So the idea that Letterman is making excuses and saying he didn't mean the 14 year old then someone in his writing staff messed up. He does after all make tens of millions per year, so he can well afford to get the fact right. They should have noted she was 14 and not the 18 year old daughter whom I assume Letterman was joking about.
So since Obamas are taking their kids to Paris, London and are allowing them to be photographed how is this different from the Palins having their children in the news when running for office, like most candidates did? If its ok to joke about the Palins kids then joke about the Obama girls.
Or do NOT joke about any politicians kids
~Beth~ | |
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 9:32:58 PM | | ^^^ Exactly what kind of bully are you that you are going after kids, 18 or 14 or 8. He was out of line, and is acting like an ass. | |
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/11/2009 9:42:00 PM | To begin with, Sarah Palin was in New York for a good cause anyway, and like what others have mentioned, with the younger daughter.
I don't care if people think Palin over reacted or not.... I find it upsetting with those on here who find it ok, to go after someone's daughters and say these things because of your political views.
Say all you want about Sarah, and hate on Bush.... And I'll say all the things I don't agree with Pelosi or Obama...
But I'm not going to say this kind of crap about his kids. It just isn't right... and if you approve of this kind of attack... Your not thinking straight.... If Rush attacked Obama's girls... I'd say the same thing...
And one more thing, wether you're a Christian or not, all people are human and make mistakes. I believe it's a good thing for a young lady who made a mistake, goes out and has a voice to others not to make the same mistake she did...
It isn't hypocrisy.... She isn't judging anyone or putting anyone down... Only saying she made a mistake... and it would be wise if others didn't make the same mistake.
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/12/2009 1:07:16 AM | I'm sure Letterman will include this in his "Top 10 dumbest things I said on my show."
Imagine trying to narrow the list down to ten.
Well, guess he has to talk about something, and granny-gets-tasered jokes only fill so much time.
Every now and then I see clips of Letterman, and all they do is remind me why I never watched him on a regular basis.
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/12/2009 2:20:35 AM | | Letterman seems to be Hollywoods favorite. I wonder why? | |

| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/12/2009 5:49:35 PM | Palin invited Letterman to go hunting in Alaska
That might actually be funny if you said she invited Cheney, too. I think you left something out. It's too hard for an Alaskan to make it look like an accident.
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/13/2009 9:12:51 AM | I agree with everything Big Daddy said ... except the comment that Letterman should be taken off the air ...
omg! if we took EVERY ignorant, thotless or careless person who made an ill-advised and stupid remark off t.v. ... there wouldn't be a whole lot left to watch ...
if you find Letterman offensive ... and I do ... you shouldn't watch him ... and I don't!
because of this fiasco, I HAVE watched, just to see what it was all about ... and I thoroughly agree that WHICH EVER DAUGHTER he was referring to and WHOM EVER'S DAUGHTER he was referring to ... he was OUT OF LINE, CRUDE and OFFENSIVE ... it must suck to be a comedian and have to try to think of witty things to say (or to read) every night ...
and look how this has boosted his ratings ... he got even ME to watch ...
while he has my sympathy (kind of) ... he does NOT have my empathy (at all) ... and I, too, would have made a big deal out of it if he had been talking about my daughter! I wouldn't have been as polite as Sarah has been!
| |
|
| Letterman v Palin Posted: 6/13/2009 9:27:33 AM | he was OUT OF LINE, CRUDE and OFFENSIVE
I agree. I have adjusted my own humor style to avoid crude, step lightly on offensive, and abstain from demeaning, derogatory, and abusive. Letterman was all of the above. If I do make any of those types of comments, it is not typically intended to be funny.
