| Anyone game on Unix/Linux? Posted: 6/11/2009 4:35:35 PM | Just wondering of all the many games on unix/linux which ones are the most popular. I love my Xbox 360, but a lot of my co-workers are into pc gaming, so I figured I'd see if anyone on here was as well.
Here are a few I've tried so far:
FPS Yo Frankie! - Graphics were kinda cool. But it was too kiddie or my taste. Wish it was a lil more violent
World of Padman - Again, a lil too cartoon-y for me.
Racing VDrift - This one was fun. Yay! Even though my ADD usually kicks in when playing sports and racing games.
MMORPG Vendetta - This was fun. It's no WoW, but fun nonetheless
Strategic Dwarf Fortress - OMG, this one was overly difficult. I mean, I totally dig a challenge, but this one's ridiculous. So, yea, I doubt I'll be playing that one again.
Wesnoth - This one was fun. The graphics kinda sucked, but I liked it.

| Anyone game on Unix/Linux? Posted: 6/11/2009 7:56:29 PM | I played Left 4 Dead on Linux. I had to turn down the settings so far that Half-Life 1 actually looked better. That's the downside of no native ports.
All the commercial PC Games are unfortunately for Windows. Sure, some games are ported over (UT2k4), but they're far and few between. That said, Linux does have a solid library of games dedicated towards the casual gamer.

| Anyone game on Unix/Linux? Posted: 6/17/2009 1:04:16 AM | | i would totally ditch windows in a heartbeat if i could get windows games to play on *nix. WINE has never really proven itself to be all that workable a solution for me. what really irks me is that parallels for mac (essentially BSD) shows so much promise, i wish they'd port it to debian or slackware. | |

| Anyone game on Unix/Linux? Posted: 6/17/2009 8:45:47 PM | I primarily use Linux Mint (a recent switch from Ubuntu).. Haven't tried to play a whole lot of games, but these 4 work for sure..
Masters of Orion ii Masters of Orion iii Doom 3 Age of Empires 3
Those are the only ones I've tested on the system as of yet.. But the only one I had to down anything extra for was Age of Empires.. The other 3 worked just fine on Mint without a hitch..
Note: For "Masters of Orion ii" to work on Windows Vista I had to copy a file.. Change the extension on the copy & put it in a new folder.. Not a huge hastle.. But still enough to make me shake my head when it works just fine on Windows XP..

Alien Arena 2009 June 19th, 2009 by Marv
We received the following announcement today:
It’s been over six long months of dedicated, at times daunting, and ultimately triumphant work…and COR Entertainment at last announces the release of Alien Arena 2009!
You’ve seen the screenshots, the videos, now it is time to face the alien invasion head on, armed to the hilt with disruptors, beamguns, and vaporizors. The amount of improvements to the game engine are staggering. The game comes alive with the full implementation of GLSL per-pixel lighting on all surfaces, OpenAL audio system, and new gameplay features. Optimization was as always, another aspect that we’ve addressed. No longer does one have to be leary of cranking the settings up, the game plays remarkably faster with the switch to GLSL for per-pixel operations. Alien Arena has transformed into a lean, clean, fragging machine, with stunning visual effects that are usually reserved for commercial titles. This isn’t your daddy’s Alien Arena – it’s not even last year’s model, with a host of new and improved maps, sounds and music.
Some of the new features in this release:
* GLSL per-pixel lighting on all surfaces * OpenAL 1.1 * Ogg-Vorbis support * GLSL post process framebuffer effects * New scoreboards * New HUD * Stereo music files * Seven new maps and two new player characters * Light volumes * Voice taunt system * Doppler sound effects
Tribal Trouble 2
After months of tweaking and expanding, Tribal Trouble 2 is ready to throw away its beta tag, but it will keep growing. Since the last release, two new connected quests have been added. Your urge to loot your rich neighbors ends up in an unexpected alliance that will bring you far away from home in search for great riches. The Hall has been updated further so it is now possible to see who is playing, and a new quick stat islands has been added, which pits you against an equal opponent on a random 1 vs. 1 island.
Many More......

LinCity-NG SimCity 2000 under Wine (haven't tried it in XP, but it runs well under wine)
Here's a list of what won't work under Wine with Ubuntu 9.04 amd64:
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas The Sims 2 Simcity 3000 (haven't had it enough to play under XP) SimCity 4 (don't know how it'll run under XP) Prison Tycoon 4 (doubt it'll run on my hardware) Postal 2 (I think it's mostly the current Wine having issues since SA is supposed to run too)
