Question for ladies: Eating like a pig before period
Posted: 6/12/2009 8:10:38 PM
Every month several days before period, my appetite gets so good that I can eat a horse ! That often ruins my fitness plan and I gained all the weight I lost in the month. Is that normal ? Should I control myself or listen to my body and just eat ?

Question for ladies: Eating like a pig before period

If I gave into what my body craved that week, I would gain it all back. Oh wait, I do gain 5 pounds that week... like clockwork.

For some reason, I crave steak and all sorts of red meat. I give into the steak. A nice big ribeye marbled beautifully. I will give into a little chocolate or ice cream... never both.

I guess to answer your question, yes, it's okay to give into a craving or two, but try to stay focused on your regular routine. Suggestion... This may be a good week to have a "cheat day". Take yourself out. I don't know about you, but I feel miserable that week. I can always use a little pampering.

Don't use your period as an excuse for eating to excess. You know you are not hungry and that your body doesn't need the additional calories so use self control.

Make sure your meals and snacks are filling foods - proteins, cereals/grains, veg/fruit - don't keep other rubbish in the cupboards.

If you are genuinely hungry eat healthy and if its a craving you will know because it is usually a specific item you are wanting/craving rather than food in general. Funny how we always crave something full of sugar, fat or salt..

Actually, its entirely normal to be ravenous for a few days before your period. Extra weight gain around then is to be expected as women often retain fluids.

Craving red meat would especially be natural as your period can lower your iron levels. Chocolate also normal as it does help alleviate pms.

I say eat until you're not hungry. You don't need to go hog wild on junk, but if you already eat well, there is nothing wrong with eating more before your period.

I don't have the kind of pre-period craving for extra food like OP. But ever since I've picked up yoga I feel the change in me, I used to like eating meat (chicken mainly, never a red meat eater anyway) to something light, fruits and vegetable. I don't know how and why but it just happens.

I am downing some carrot sticks dipped in mayonnaise right now as my brunch, yum yum!

you might consider using EFA's

use a capsule or two (as directed) of evening primrose and flax oil daily to help level
it out a bit- stay full of water between meals, etc.

if you're gonna eat, eat healthy, low cal lowfat- be prepared and keep healthy things at an arm's reach
fill up on an apple, etc between meals if you can't do just water---

It's crunchy Cheetohs (or generic brand) and brownies for me. I have to have my salty and sweet. I know I shouldn't, but what the hell. Good for the soul. I try to eat right the rest of the month.

Should I control myself or listen to my body and just eat ?

Depends on what your body is telling you to eat
If you want to binge on junk food, sugar, chocolate, sweets and all the unhealthy foods you can grab, no.
If your body is asking for protein-rich foods, healthy carbs, and a good mix of fruit and vegetables, yes.
I think it would make more sense to look at your overall diet and see what's missing. If you deal with that, you can alleviate the cravings and binge eating.

I have the often mentioned cravings for chocolate and salty foods...but I don't think I am hungrier.
I eat a little of what I am craving...usually some will satisfy...even if I am dreaming of a giant candy bar. That isn't what I actually want and I get sick of it after a little bit.

Cravings are totally normal with the influx of hormones before your period, but you need to learn to control them better. Work on your will power a bit and over time it'll get easier to beat the cravings. Maybe you need to allow yourself a cheat meal in the week before your period, ONE meal isn't going to make you gain all the weight you've lost in a month back, however, eating poorly over the course of that entire week may contribute to that weight gain. Also, before you make the decision to eat something you know you shouldn't, remind yourself about that weight-gain you experience afterwards, and how hard you worked to take that weight off in the first place.

Sounds like you need to speak to a nutrionalist/nutrionist and get on a solid eating plan that works for you ALL MONTH so you have something to stick to when the times get tough. Good luck, though, I've been there myself and I know it sucks!!

Totally normal for me ;-). I don't usually crave junk anyway. When I do crave right before that 'visit', it's cravings for protein.

ox, grow the fk up.. you can vote im sure and should have the maturity to act like somebody who can vote..

Now to the OP, the best way to not give in to cravings is to not have the sht foods.

just like.. the best way to not get hit is to NOT BE THERE.

Yes!!!! I never made the connection until my neighbour mentionned to me that she does and asked me if I did. I said I didn't think so but then I started to observe my eating habits and tracking them against my cycle and whammo...if I wasn't eating a lot more just before my period came.

A lot of times your body craves foods due to nutrient deficiency (your body needs something). You can google what your craving and find out what nutrient you may be needing like Chocolate cravings are linked to magnesium deficiency & red meat with iron deficiency! Also some people believe that consuming more B vitamins reduces food cravings... and they boost your mood!
Hope this helps

I do not use my period as an excuse to binge on anything. Then again I do not get these cravings...or PMS or any of that. I see a lot of people use this "time of the month" as an excuse to eat unecessary crap. Control yourself. Why eat a bunch of crap?? I do not get it. It is all in what you decide to put in your mouth. Sorry ladies, I work out WAY to hard to use one time out of the month to eat like a piggy. Eat 6 small meals a day, behave youreself and you will be fine. If you gained back all you lost, that should be a huge indicator your diet is probably not right to begin with...and not even worth cheating .

Question for ladies: Eating like a pig before period

In the last year I have learned to control the craving and/or be aware of what it is I AM craving during that time. On the other hand, over the last year, I have done a lot more than just diet and exercise to become more attuned to my body as well.

I have noticed that one steak a month is not throwing my weight loss off at all. Nor is treating myself to some chocolate every once and a while. Knowing I get the cravings for these mostly the week before my period does allow me to decide when I will enjoy these little not exactly healthy treats.

But like I said in another thread.... I am not on a "diet". I am on a lifestyle change. I cannot go through my life completely not enjoying this or that in my food intake. No wait, I choose not to deny myself the things I love. The point is portion and knowing when enough is enough. My favorite example is ice cream. A serving size of ice cream is a half of a cup (pretty much a small cone). If someone sticks to a serving size of a treat like that, their body learns to be satisfied with that amount. I rarely want ice cream, so when I AM in the mood for it... I go for it. A small cone usually does me happily.

For me... it is learning how to eat smart... not abandoning the pleasure get from it.

Life is too short to let your hormones get the best of you. But for one or two days a month, agree to yeild if that's what keeps you moving throughout your cycle.

Weight Gain=water retention. I actually heard that drinking water helps this, as well as potassium foods. My frined swears by pineapple.

Red Meat is Rich in Iron. We're loosing blood which carries iron which gives us energy. I'm a veggie but there are days when I could tear into a porterhouse like a ravenous wolf.

Chocolate is God's Gift to Women Everywhere. Most health nuts recommend 75% cacao chocolate. I recommend Green n' Black's 80% Cacao bar.

The rest is just being aware of what else you are putting into your body. Some can't handle soy (breast cancer survivors, hashimotos thyroid patients, etc...) but Silk has chocolate soy milk that is the best and it does help with cramps and balance for me.

I wont go rooting through the large cans of raviolis or cookie dough, but there are sites that offer PMS friendly foods you can sub for. Or you can just indulge for a day or two a month and get over it. Unless the end of the world will be the day after your run in with Aunt Flo, The gym will still be there.

I just saw someone mention the craving for salty/sweet things. Be careful of salt before this time. That holds water in and that doesn't help.

I know exactly what you mean and I think it is normal. You should control yourself especially if you gained back all the weight that you just lost. you work to hard to take off the weight. When you get those cravings eat what your craving and dont deprive yourself but do so in moderation. take three bites of it anything after that three bites, it doesn't taste as good. this way you keep the weight off. Good luck

It's totally normal. Your deprived of a lot of nutrients and are tired and cranky if you don't properly fuel yourself.
It's actually okay to eat alot the week b/f your period, so long as you keep healthy.
*Your metabolism actually shoots up during that time. Your body is working overtime.*
You have to snack and eat so you don't get hungry. If you don't eat what you need, trust me not matter how much self restraint you have, you'll end up bingeing.
If you keep eating, you should have the energy to run around and stay fit.
*If you don't eat when you're cravings kick in, you will just become irritated and moody and tired and end up going on a binge fest.*
I hate that the most, when you are so tired from your period and not eating enough makes me feel like curling up in a cave.

Yup. Happens every month like clock work. I can gain up to 7lbs during my period, and immediately lose it within a day of it ending. I was very happy that I didn't gain any weight during this month, so I knew when it was over that I would find I'd actually lost a few pounds. It can throw my waist measurements off by a couple of inches too.
