| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/15/2009 10:45:04 PM | (Continuing on in the tradition of other threads such as dustyangel1’s thread on Ethanol http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts10909461.aspx ) Are there any fuel/motor experts on the forum? Can I have your attention for a moment please? It’s a fact that because of rising fuel costs and other economic factors people are more nervous and “on edge”. So why does the Ethanol bowser only have 10%, instead of 50%, 80%, 100% Ethanol content? Is the reasoning because of the motor engine design capabilities, if so why don’t they make Ethanol ready cars, or (as I have already completed an Advanced Rigging Cerificate Ticket) is it an employment issue? Are there any other issues such as safety?
As the renewable energy is a trend industry in Austrasia, why is not more money invested in it as it should provide great return portfolio as well as plenty of jobs?

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/16/2009 2:27:11 AM | and what are your trying to achieve with this ethanol stuff ?? Wikipedia quote
biomass often involves a burning process that produces emissions such as Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2), but fortunately in quantities far less than those emitted by coal plants
so lets say we are going to use supa dupa bio organic fuels. at almost 7 billion people on this silly little insignificant rock, even if we all changed to biofuel at best its just delaying the same end as burning fossil fuels. whats crazy is every single scientist and learned person knows this....here and abroad
nuclear is the ONLY f&%king answer. ... oh NO !! nuclear I hear you say.....your worried about another Chernobyl, but dont after the early nuclear weapons tests carried out by the USA , USSR and china over 300 warheads tested(some thermo nuclear) it makes Chernobyl look like spilt milk.
nuclear energy has absolutely NO airborne waste. which means we can store it in solid form. with out hurting the atmosphere...moreover cars can use electrical energy to drive. no emissions at all....not like now with charging off the grid with fossil fuels... (yay my car dont give of emissions, just the coal plant does instead)
am gunna go one step further and say this country of ours is the largest exporter of uranium on the before mentioned insignificant rock named earth yet our country is far more than 3/4's desert. do the math. we are learning ways to even contain depleted uranium in minerals..on the abc (catalyst) today they are talking about minerals found in some quarry near lake blah blah in vic that contains the radio active uranium naturally. maybe mother nature has a few tricks yet to teach.
will stop ranting.... please dont mistake me for attacking your question but if bio fuels postpone the end of earth well whats the point..

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/16/2009 6:57:23 AM | its not really feasible really... how many % of food crops would you like to convert into ethanol for fuel? space is also another matter, once ethanol becomes a major ingredient in fuel, the price would spike, which then would make it more profitable for farmers to grown crops for ethanol fuel instead of food.... which then would reduce the amount of food crops grown, which then increases the price of food....
its not really the answer. nuclear isnt a bad idea, so long as we could be sure of no leaks or meltdowns, with a safe way of storing the waste so that it doesnt contaminate the water or food chain. but, unlikely to be implemented in australia in the near future.

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/16/2009 10:27:32 AM | Hey I'm just providing a few alternatives, it's your choice if you use them or not!
I like the idea of using an area of the sea to make algae for biofuel, but if you want to use Nuclear that's your choice!

Not to mention the effect on the water supply. All of a sudden a drought reduces the amount of water that is available for home use and food crops and the diversion to biofuel crops has become automatic and irreversible. Not going to do much good to be able to drive as far as you want if you have nothing to eat or drink. Nah, I think I'd rather eat my food that comes from the soil and run my car on fuel that comes from the depths. Trying to improve on nature could be detrimental.

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/18/2009 4:35:39 AM | yeah... i know it can be done.... it requires a bit of work to be done to the vehicle, but it can be done... ok, so then, where are you going to get all the vege oil you'll need if people mass convert their engines? All the chip shops in australia wouldnt be enough to supply enough used oil to filter and be used... so then, you'd need new oil... but what about people that want to cook?
its not about 'can it be done?' rather more of a 'is it feasible?'
i can be done... but it isnt very feasible at the moment, not without a lot more space, to get the bio, in biofuel

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/18/2009 4:46:15 AM | I can see fish and chip shop/garage type stores popping up....
value adding to their by products... onsite
hey.. fill up the car out back while waiting for the nights fish and chips up front..... mmmmmmm ....

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/18/2009 8:03:24 AM | yeah, but i wonder if there would be a big hue and cry about that remember when there was a big hue and cry about having to pay for sauce with a pie?
people will start wondering if they shouldnt get extra oil for free too :p

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/20/2009 2:20:00 AM | I look at all the sticks and branches that the huge gum trees on my boundary throw me for free every year... and wonder why they aren't considered "renewable resource"..
and if I burned them for my fuel it'd save a bit of coal at the power plant....
the trees aren't going anywhere.. and the sticks keep dropping off.... certainly renewable...
if power prices keep going up a lot of people will think the same thing...
unless they ban the personal combusting of dead sticks your own trees provide?...
I'm waiting for them to make roll out solar sheeting. or corro roof sheets that power up.. it won't be too long....

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/22/2009 4:23:14 PM | ^^^ They always have. The oil corporations have also supported nukes from the beginning. Goes against conventional wisdom but that's the business they're in is supplying usable energy to the masses for that oh such an evil thing that I don't know if I can bring myself to type it out.

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/25/2009 10:05:09 PM | nuc is not the answer, yes there are safer after the chenoble but theres nutters out there which will fly planes into them then the waste is very airbourne and hangs a round for a long time , so wind solar biofuels wave look the best optoin theres no big answer but lots of little ones
so if any has aproblem with my crap spelling get a life

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/26/2009 3:59:58 PM | The whole point of using bio-derived fuels is that we are only puting into the atmosphere Carbon that will be used up again by plants. We are not unlocking Carbon produced by long dead plants. This will reduce the increase of Carbon in the atmosphere.
However we still need to be producing energy wth non-Carbon emitting technology such as Solar and Wind power. Nearly all the energy comes from the Sun (Wind caused by Sun heating atmosphere, Photo-voltaic cells from the Sun's photons, Carbon cycle from Sunlight energy through plants) but we need to cut out the Carbon cycle part.
Plant oil technologies (bio-desiel or ethanol) will cut our reliance on fossil fuels from an increasingly politically unstable part of the planet and if they are handled properly reduce the monopoly big oil companies have on our energy production.

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/26/2009 4:14:24 PM | I have a very good friend that has a business cleaning out fryers used by fast food providers, his deisel vehicle fleet is powered by fryer oil, filtered of course. There is a loss of about 10% performance (he also runs offrouders)
Hes been in business since we left university in the 80's and hasnt paid for fuel since 1989.......competitive advantage and a greener solution, lateral thinking

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/26/2009 5:02:02 PM | Bio-desiel should actually be more thermally efficient than fossil desiel. there is a longer carbon molecule to break down. This is the reason why desiel is more thermally eficient than motor spirit (petrol). You should get more kiometres to the litre. Dr Desiel actually designed his motor to run on vegetable oil. Germany has no indigenous oil supply and it' colonies had none either. Which was why Hitler pushed his generals to capture the Caucus Oil Fields.
Briefly, to make vegetable oil bio-desiel, filter used cooking oil or fresh squeezed oil through a 20 micron filter into a thick steel vat with a large drain at the bottom and a decanting tap 1/3 the way up. An old domestic LPG clinder inverted in a frame with the bottom cut off is good for this. That will give you about 75 litres of oil. Mix a measured amount of caustic soda with a measured amount of ethanol (motor alcohol) ... you need to check the amounts of this on the net ... and add stirring to the oil filled vat. The mixture will heat up and turn an orange hue. Let sit for 24 to 48 hours depnding on the temperature. A white/yellow grease will settle to the bottom of the vat. You can drain this into a container and make soap out of it if you want. It is glycerine. Decant the "flocked" oil from the vat to run directly in some pre-2000 desiel motors. I have seen and driven Toyota Landcruisers happily running on this vegetable oil with no need to preheat in the tropics. It can also be mixed with fossil desiel to run.
There are some risks involved. Caustic Soda is a dangerous chemical if not handled correctly. Alcohol is highly inflammable. If you don't flock out enough of the waxes (glycerine) you may leave damaging deposits in your combustion chamber.

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/27/2009 1:00:26 AM | | I could live in a cave ,caves fascinate me, and use hardly any fuel . Just quickly light a wood fire and be solitary and hunt with traps and spears . This I suppose would presume most of the world would have gone in other fuel consuming , 4 wheel drive to the shops directions and not know where I was . I am not anti social just tired of modern ways and greed. | |

| Renewable Energy in Australia? Posted: 6/27/2009 5:54:52 AM | yeh, a cave near a waterfall with a big covered living deck built out the front....
the waterfall could have a paddle wheel running a shaft hooked to a bunch of 24V truck alternators with basic wiring and a bank of batteries,,,,, ticking over 24/7....
plenty of 12V stuff today of 240V inverters,,,, that would be your power covered.... from the junkyard...
run a few wires back into the cave for some mood lighting....
