Why do political threads turn into name calling and insults ?Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
If this has been done before, sorry, but I did a brief search and came up with zilch.

I don't involve myself too much in the political threads, but that doesn't mean that I don't read them

But why is it after so many pages, the name calling and hair pulling kicks in ?

If someone is 'political' do they have to debate to the death (literally) ?

At what point do you agree to differ ...................... or don't you ?

If only they literally did.

It would certainly save so many people from wearing out the scroll wheels on their mice in the future.

I don't think it's just restricted to political threads and sometimes a thread can go on quite peacefully for a couple of weeks before it descends into name calling.
I would imagine that a section of people who are calling names would call them on other threads, but as we can see, some topics make emotions run high.

I suspect it's because people reach the end of their debating abilities and reason. It gets them all frustrated when others are destroying their arguments without resorting to personal attack - that's when they lash out!

I have three ways of participating in such threads:

1) I will correct errors.

2) I willl state my opinion on the topic.

3) I will respond to any posts which either ask for clarification or question my reasoning/facts.

This can take a while, sometimes!

Its because political events are distanced from our regular interactions; polarized views have no natural correcting forces. Being right or wrong has zero effect on our day to day lives as few of us have direct experience making and observing the unreported and corallary effects of high level political decisions. When there are no stakes the ante can climb to any level.

Or course I could be very wrong; I've never got why the weather channel keeps focusing on rain, snow and the outdoors either.

An interesting topic

But why is it after so many pages, the name calling and hair pulling kicks in ?.

I would imagine there are a several reasons...

1) People become intolerant of others views
2) People cannot accept others views
3) People have no more to give on the issue once their views prove to be flawed on closer examination

If someone is 'political' do they have to debate to the death (literally) ?

No, but people will because they think they're right even though the evidence is their to suggest otherwise

I will continue to debate all the while people firmly have the blinkers on

At what point do you agree to differ ...................... or don't you ?

That is quite ambiguous and would depend on the individuals partaking in the debate

If it's a reasonably civilsed then I don't see the harm in continuing providing it's not going around in circles

However, if it gets a little heated, personal, insulting, etc, then I will call it a day with that individual, but not necessarily the topic

The topics of politics and religion will always result in heated debate and ultimately falling out, that's just the kids

I would say the main reason people get so frustrated is because of lack of understanding and biased replies.

Despite this I think it's good that people are standing up and taking an interest in politics.

"I'm not interested in politics, i'll just vote labour". I used to hear that response from people a lot, but politics does matter to us as does what party we vote for.

I leave them to it because politics is full of fanatics, and as you know....

a fantaic is someone that won't change his mind and can't change the subject.

I can always agree to differ on politics and religion - most people cant see past the end of their own noses and have been brought up to think they have to fight anything and everything especially if they are on the opposing "team".

You only need to watch that unruly mob in the house of commons, hurling peurile insults, sniggering like schoolkids and heckling anyone who tries to speak, makes you wonder how anything ever gets resolved in there.

That and the fact that no-one on the political threads will ever agree to differ.

I think the trend seems to be on here lately that whenever any political debates appear, regardless of the topic content the words 'BNP' or 'Racist' somehow are introduced to the debate by the usual suspects which brings the lefts and rights out of their corners fighting !!

I think the answer is quite simply childish people with immature emotions abound in here.
That's what they come for, the fight and the angst and the upset.
They get off on it.
That's my opinion but I'd be happy to hear from those who disagree.

I agree!

We have just lost two interesting threads (rightly, in my opinion) because the usual suspects had to resort to personal comments. Claiming that people are 'xenophobic' or 'racist' is against forum rules, and when people ignore those rules, we get chaos. I privately requested one poster (whose views I agreed with, broadly) to refrain from posting further, as it was clear his manner was going to result in the loss of one of those threads. He refused - and the thread was nuked.

It happens in real life, though......witness the disgraceful conduct by the people in the studio in this clip:

It's interesting to note how Hodge actually admits that something should be done!

The last two posters and zeegary are absolutely correct...In my opinion...

I would like to add an observation, when they resort to puerile personal attacks, it means they have no argument to counter, so they resort to what they know best, insults and slander...

Then there's the keyboard commandos....

I love discussing politics and bashing Labour being a Conservative Supporter
when ever possible but don't on here much due to the points raised in the opening post

Whats the point in getting your point across if the thread is going to end up deleted?

I've never seen a topic on the BNP last long due to all the name calling and insults.

So its not surprising really that there not welcome on the UK forum and always removed.

The threads as well as the posters that is!

I think if a political issue is particularly close to your heart and you have passionate opinions, then you're simply unable to understand people who can't see what you do.

I try really hard to walk away from threads that include any "racist" undertones, but I'll pop back out of curiosity and find something I just can't help responding to, most of the time against my better judgement.

I guess, if the truth be known, we'd like to think maybe we can get someone to understand our point on these issues.

I understand that people have their own opinions on many many subjects, but some I find hard to drop because I feel so passionately about them. When my rational mind eventually takes over, I do realise that everyone has their own opinion and they are as entitled to that as I am. This is when I usually accept that maybe they're as passionate as I am on that particular issue and walk away.

I've had a few heated debates here on certain subjects, but I've also agreed with my "opposition" on other issues. We may have differing opinions but that doesn't make any of us wrong or bad people and we should be able to accept that. After all, this world would be pretty boring if we all agreed on everything!

Have you not seen Prime Ministers Question Time? Its little more than a group of children throwing insults at each other. It's only ever one step away from name calling!

Monkey see target. Target is other monkey. Monkey beats chest and screams loudly. Other monkey does same. Looks scary. Scream louder. So does other monkey. Throw shit at other monkey. Other monkey throws shit back...

So much for parliamentary procedure.

This place is no different.

Standard monkey behaviour: if you can't attack the message, attack the messenger. Add in the basic ability to upgrade your attacks with increasing levels of nastiness and the percieved anonymity of the internet...

You then end up with threads that should NOT be deleted.

Instead of the moderator's dealing with thread deletion, why doesn't Marcus have them working as cat-herder's, trying to get the rest of us back on topic?

I think you would have more chance of knitting fog than getting some people back on topic when they have the proverbial bee in their bonnet

I am now viewing all forum posters as monkeys or apes, from the big chest-beating silver backs to the agile little capuchins, and all varieties in between

The threads that have been deleted lasted whilst posters addressed the topic, so there was no censorship of the subject. I think it became obvious that some forumites found this was impossible to sustain. Because they all headed the same way the blanket ruling was imposed.

There is one moderator active and he lives in Canada. He is not a paid employee. When the UK forumites do most of their posting he is still working. We all toddle off to sleep and then he starts trying to keep up with the violation reports. The damage gets done and the thread is either impossible to clean up or would take too much time - this is only a local forum, not the whole world!

Making too much fuss about the deletion of all BNP threads is a forum protest and I guess if it continues will end up with the whole thread being deleted.

Msg 22 - I love the analysis!

I have two boys who tackle arguments in two entirely different ways. It is just like reading the threads sometimes.

The older boy starts with, "I know everything there is to know cos I am older than you."

The younger says, "Did you know this fact that refutes your proposition?"

Older boy says, "The person who came up with that fact is not to be believed because I don't agree."

Younger boy, "Why don't you agree?"

Older boy, "Why don't you listen? I told you I don't agree because the person who said that fact is not to be believed."

Attach those methods of debate to the intense threads on here and see how well they fit - at least when I read them I don't have the shouting that accompanies my sons' arguing though!
