| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/19/2009 4:38:46 AM | Here we are again, almost 3 years later.... how could we delay going to one of the most beautiful spots on earth for soooo long?

Check out the pictures from the last one at... http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts4927012.aspx WHERE: Powell river.....Haywire Bay campsite (directions below)
WHEN: July 24th and 25th 2009
COST:$10 per tent or rv per night, (max 3 people) extra people $3 each. The campground manager will collect each night.
HOST: bigandtalldancer
THIS IS A KID FRIENDLY EVENT
Coming from the lower mainland I suggest you reserve on the Horseshoe bay to Langdale Ferry, or be there an hour or more early. Do get to Earls cove as soon as you can or you may have to wait 2 extra hours, if the ferry is full .
From Van Is. I would be at Little River at least 1 hour early.
Directions and info is as follows.....From the Saltery Bay ferry drive 28k and take a right on Joyce ave (Thunder bay store +gas bar on the right).down Joyce ave just over 6 k to the end. Left on Manson ave 1 block then right on Cassiar st keep left, now you are on Yukon ave . Part way around Cranberry lake You will see the campsight sign. Take a right on Haslam st , at the top of the hill keep to the left and follow the signs. Then look for red ribbons!
From the Van Is ferry . Off the ferry to the first light take a left, follow Marine ave to the next light and go right up Alberni st at the next light go left onto Joyce ave. Along Joyce to the end and go left, along Manson for 1 block then right onto Cassiar st stay left you are now on Yukon ave. . Part way around Cranberry Lake you will see the campsight sign, Turn right on Haslam st. at the top of the hill stay left and follow the signs.
Entering the campsite stay right up a little hill then right into our campsite.
There is a common cooking and eating area in our groupsite and I am bring my grill stove combo and light.
I don't think everyone needs to bring the works so if you don't have them or don't have room I wouldn't worry about it as the locals will bring all their gear.
Ride sharing or carpooling is strongly recommended as it will help keep the costs down!
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING AS SPACE IS LIMITED ON THE GROUP SITE. WE MAY ALL HAVE TO DOUBLE UP IF YOU DON'T!!
Tucked into the shoreline of Powell Lake near Inland Lake, Haywire Bay Regional Park is a popular recreation playground on the upper Sunshine Coast. You'll find picnicking, camping, canoeing and swimming at Haywire Bay Regional Park. One of the treats of visiting this beach is swimming the short distance to nearby Honeymoon Island.
Haywire Bay Regional Campground has 12 waterfront campsites accessed by water and 33 RV/tent campsites. There is no advanced registration other than for group camping accommodations. Other facilities include a boat launch, playground, picnic/day-use area, drinking water, showers, and toilets.
The 2.5-mile (4-km) moderately difficult Lost Lake Trail connects the park at Haywire Bay with the west side of Inland Lake. Along the way this up-and-down, forested route passes diminutive Lost Lake. A 3.5-mile (5.5-km) lakeside trail runs along the shore of Powell Lake from the park to Mowat Bay Park to the south. The 8-mile (13-km) splendidly constructed Inland Lake Trail follows the shoreline circling Inland Lake, which is ringed with cottonwoods, providing a delightful place to picnic in fall. Following Members are Attending This Party... Average Member Brings Along 3 Guests

| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/19/2009 7:31:54 AM | Awesome. Thanks for posting this event bigandtalldancer.
This should be great camping fun!
One correction. When you have entered the campgroup the groupsite will on your right, not your left. It is the first site you come to after you enter and pass the caretakerk's cabin (also on you right). You'll see a name sign in a tree at the that site.
There is potable water at the groupsite.
I will bring a two-burner stove and will try to bring my small semi-portable grill as well.
Remember there is no electricity to pump up your air mattresses or run your coolers.
I suggest we have a potluck on Saturday, 6 pm. Anyone else game for that?
I"ll bring my bicycle for a side trip around nearly Inland Lake.
Good idea on the carpooling.

| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/19/2009 8:27:46 AM | ^^^ Glad you your joining us phatfat.
I went to the campground at the beginning of this month and there is only one groupsite, and its definitely on the right side of the road (which is one-way) so no opportunity for confusion.
I suspect there may have been more than one groupsite in the past (the space now re-allocated) and perhaps you were previously in the other?

| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/19/2009 9:37:40 AM | HEY I'm glad this event finally made it to the forum A suggestion - maybe use the red flagging tape to mark our trail & POF signs to the actual place we should end up!
I definitely want to be part of this campout, but have no way to get there. If anyone from the island is going, please let me know so we can save cost of getting there and with more people, or if a mainlander can fetch me at the Tsawwassen Ferry that would be fantastic.
Here's to another great adventure, I've never been to Powell River!

| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/19/2009 5:50:13 PM | I would like to try this out...are kids welcome? I'm new to PR, so will have to check it out bofore I go up there...I have a travel trailer and would want to be able to safely get it there. And , because I have a trailer, I could have extra room for ??? ie: storage, sleeping, fridge... Trying to step out of my comfort zone!!! AAAHHHHH LOL | |
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/19/2009 7:21:08 PM | I have assumed it is family friendly,. last one was... and I very rarely go without my kidlets..... atleast my youngest anyhow.
BE.. perhaps they changed the way you drive in? do you turn left immediately or loop up past the campground managers' house ? things that make us go hmm,. either way,.. we'll find it!!
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/19/2009 7:52:14 PM | I defer to OP Bigntalldancer on the matter but do anticipate this to be a family friendly event. I say bring the kids, they will enjoy it too. Bring their bathing suits, PFDs and water shoes, water-proof sunscreen, etc, for no doubt they'll want to swim.
There is room for a few RVs. If Phatfat is bringing her motorhome I think we can shoe-horn in a travel trailer too.
When you enter the campground you are directed to your right along a one-way road that circles counter-clockwise through the site and exits at the same point where you went right.
Shortly after the "Keep Right" sign you pass the caretaker's cabin on your right, set back a bit from the road, then a short distance with bush on both sides, and then on your right will you'll see a sign "Groupsite" mounted on a tree and the entrance to the site immediately there after, on your right.
I can't remember when I first went there, some years ago, but am confident it has always been that way, and is the only logical choice.
Rest assured, you can't miss it.

| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/20/2009 12:32:14 PM | | Im very close to haywire bay lol. It will be fun. Bruce the caretaker is fairly nice most of the time. Is there going to be people there my age? (22-30)? im 25. three kids yadda yadda. lol Also I see its supposed to be 10 dollars a nite. Is that a special price? Because the sites now go for $18 a nite. | |
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/20/2009 1:26:13 PM | Wow Bruce is still there,... cool. I am looking forward to this. Still trying to wrap my head around BE's description of the site and how it differs from mine and BNT's memories. OH well,. just have to go and find out HAHAHAHA The price is because it is a group campsite Roykva. BTW we don't care how old/young you are. We all get along. I have three sons... 18 / 16 and 9 and probably a couple of their friends will come inevitably as usual.
Off to check the ferry schedule from Comox...... BNT or BE know what time check IN is???? have to squeak every minute out of this weekend as I can. Probably have to take Friday off.

| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/20/2009 8:37:16 PM | Thank god...lol Im no drunk rowdy but when im camping i figure I deserve a cold one or twelve.. lol If anyone needs help with directions etc I would be happy to help them out. The place I own here in powell river would actually look across to haywire bay except my brothers house is in the way lol! | |
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/21/2009 1:16:27 AM | Yeh...camping would not be camping without alcohol... that would simply be called alcohol abuse! And I would never...of course its also not very often that I am totally innebriated..however I will take a good shot at it if someone promises to help me to my tent! As well as....see if i'm still breathing in the morning and come and peel me out of my tent! | |
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/22/2009 12:05:34 PM | Check in time would be well before the gate is locked at 10 PM. The gate is locked from 10 pm to 6 am. Checkout time for departing guests is noon.
Regarding the earliest time you can check in, I just talked to the caretaker about this. If there is no one else in the groupsite on the night before eager beavers can check in when the gates open at 6 am. If someone is there then the earliest would be approximately 1 pm, to give him an opportunity to clean the site for us.
At the moment no one has reserved the site for the July 23rd. Bruce said if someone does reserve it he will call me and I will post that here.
Often people traveling from the lower mainland are unclear about the following. You pay only at Horseshoe Bay and at Saltery Bay. You do not pay to get off the Sechelt Peninsula, at either the Earl's Cove or the Langdale ferry terminals.

| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/24/2009 12:04:51 PM |
I LOVE camping and having FUN and don't need a drop of alcohol to achieve that. Many of us do exactly that, no matter what we partake in. I also whole heartedly support what BE has said, and more. It doesn't matter what event you go to there is bound to be the few that over-indulge or get carried away. But, the people attending the one in Coombs were very friendly, fun and a great bunch to get to know. We're all different, but I didn't hear or see anything that was inappropriate. I think making judgement without actually attending an event is unfair. Camping and events is what you make of it, not up to the hosts, or attendees to provide a "perfect" atmosphere. They work very hard, and within the rules, to carry out events. To cater to everyone's needs would be impossible, well except for the dark chocolate - that is a MUST in my books Sorry BE, next time it's swimming with the "real" in the lake!
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/24/2009 12:26:54 PM | ^^^
Thank you for your supportive post. Well said.
Oh darling, no worries, I'll be bringing some dark chocolates. Maybe I can score some Kisses.
Are the Hershey's kind available in dark chocolate?
Sounds like I'll have to bring my swim trunks too, but hope I don't scare all the little kids when they see me.
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/24/2009 12:44:18 PM | Looks like I'll be joining tho may get to Powell River a day or so early and may bring some visitors from overseas...nothing written in stone yet, but I'll be there .
Looking forward to ruff some poor 'ole eagles tail feathers, at least the ones he kept from the event here in town
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/24/2009 7:24:09 PM | So! Pot luck Saturday late afternoon/evening...bring your own meat, and a smallish side dish to share, most times there is WAY tooo much for all of us!
The cost is figured out to 10 per tent/rv because it is a group site.
Lets get our carpooling/ride sharing together as it really helps keep the total cost down!
|
| POWELL RIVER CAMPING JULY 24th and 25th 2009 Posted: 6/26/2009 12:04:16 PM | Not sure many from the island will partake in this campout, the cost of ferries is quite a bit for an overnight trip. I'm trying to get a few people together to go, but as yet no confirmations. Anyone have a boat to pick me up, then I could do some real fishing
Yeah yeah B.E. I'm workin on it.... the chocolate better be 100% belgian "melt in your mouth" quality if I ever get there! Happy Canada Day
