Whale Wars; Unsung heroes or dangerous misfits?

There is a show on Animal Planet called "Whale Wars". It follows the exploits of the Sea Shepherds as they try and stop the Japaneese whalling fleet in the Antartic Ocean.

The Sea Shepherds are led by Captain Paul Wattson. Wattson was an early member of Green Peace (he was not a founding member, as he claims) before being kicked out in an 11 to 1 vote, Wattson giving the lone vote in support of himself.

The Sea Shepherds travel in their ship the Steve Irwin (yes named after the crocodile hunter). The Steve Irwin is a former fishing vessel converted for the Sea Shepherds use. It is NON ice rated and has a heli-pad with retractable hanger, and they have three speed boats on deck.

The Sea Shepherds tactics have included: stink bombs, slippery bombs, prop foulers, ramming, out right lies to the media, and they even boarded one of the whalling vessels.

The Sea Shepherds crew is mostly low on experience but high on spirits. The first officers seems downright incompetent and extremely dangerous.

The Japaneese use the excuse of research as a legal reason for their whalling. They set a quota of around 1000 whales each year.

GreenPeace refuses to have anthing to do with the Sea Shepherds. GreenPeace claims the Sea Shepherds are dangerous to human life and causes damage to the fight to end Japaneese whalling.

I donèt think we need to discuss the merits of whalling, since most of us should agree it is wrong.
But what do people think of this show and the Sea Shepherds.

And if you have not seen the show, I highly recommend it. It's like "Deadliest Catch" for the slow witted.

I don't think we need to discuss the merits of whaling, since most of us should agree it is wrong.

I don't. Do I think it's wrong to hunt something to the point of extinction? Yes - absolutely. Do I think whaling, and and of itself, is wrong? No - I don't see any difference between that, and hunting any other animal that we use for food, clothing, whatever.

As for the SeaShepheards .... think of them as the marine branch of PETA. Just as out to lunch, just as misguided, just as full of themselves. And the only reason they aren't murders is simply a matter of luck - and it's just a matter of time.

And I'm sure that when it happens, we'll be hearing cries of "Fascism!" without end, regardless of who arrests their sorry arses, or why.
