| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 12:53:57 AM | I have many phobias and idiosyncrasies ...so I was wondering if any one has any of the ones I do or some strange ones of their own....
Here are a few of mine...
Phobias • Feathers • Chickens
Idiosyncrasies • I don’t step any grate covers in the sidewalk • I tend to not like my food to touch each other on the plate i.e. mash potatoes and the peas…not something that I worry about too much any more however … • I can’t touch curtain material and fabrics
Ok well I have more but seriously can’t think of them…so I’ll post more later…

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 7:04:35 AM | Ahh..just remembered another one... I always have my sunnies on...I don't mean covering my eyes all the time...I mean sitting on top of my head holding my hair back. The only reason I remember was cos i just had a shower with them on...lol I've apparently fall asleep with them on, on more then one occasion....and shower with them regularly...

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 7:13:56 AM | | I used to have a few full-blown phobias. Then I learned that there are treatments for phobias that are highly effective. If your phobias are causing you unhappiness, I strongly suggest you seek out some help. Cognitive/Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is quite effective, and does not require years of treatment in most cases. Most cases are resolved with fewer than 24 therapy sessions | |

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 8:46:22 AM | For me, it's:
- Heights and flying, due to a near-crash I was involved in over Malawi, - Driving, due to a fatal accident I witnessed on my street, - Bees, because one stung me when I was a kid, and I never got over it.
Also, I hate the feeling of wet plastic bags, and certain synthetics. They give me the willies.

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 8:48:34 AM | | I had a telephone phobia and social anxiety. The latter isn't a phobia, per se, but they're closely related | |
|
| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 8:59:30 AM | Don't think these are really phobias but are things I don't like:
I will put off making a phone call for as long as possible. I just don't like doing it. But, I kind of think I may have been punished for using the phone when I was very young and that's the reason. I don't mind answering the phone, just don't like making calls. Hmm, maybe some psychoanalysis could help. :-) Nah, it keeps my phone bill small. lol
I don't like getting my hands into the dirt or anything messy such as dough or handling meat. Again, it may stem from when I was a child. My hands can get dirty, no problem, it's having them fully into the mess that bothers me. I will do it, then wash as soon as I can.
One more is I'm funny about textures of food. I can't eat anything that seems slimy such as cottage cheese, a lot of seafood, tapioca, cooked oatmeal. I love the taste of oatmeal in cookies and bread, just not cooked.
|
| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 9:10:58 AM | Heights make me nervous... but not flying. I can look out the window of an airplane at 25,000 feet - but I get uneasy climbing a 14-foot stepladder.
Go figure, huh...? | |

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 2:37:31 PM | Yep all feathers...
Thank you all fo your postings....glad to know i'm not the only one out there with a few kinks....

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 8:02:14 PM | Wanna see me get really weak in the knees? Try high places. I hate heights!
I don't like spiders
Watch how I eat a variety, one at a time unlike most who mix veggies. I eat the chicken, then the veggies, then the mashed taters, then dessert. All one at a time.
I am left handed. If I don't hold the fork the perfect "proper" way, sorry! I hold the fork my way, still serves the purpose. Sorry rich people!
|
| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 8:06:29 PM | I used to touch things twice, you know to keep things "even". LOL
I don't really do that anymore... yeah I can't remember the last time I did that. It was mostly in my teens, early 20's.

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 9:24:34 PM | Phobias *Flies (I will guard my food when I see one) *People who wear sun glasses at night *Reckless drivers
Idiosyncrasies *Losing car keys (so I keep 5 - 7 sets) *Loud laughter during sexual pleasure *Taking notes about everything *Falling asleep in the bath tub

I totally understand lol...im that way, not as much anymore but I still catch myself sometimes making things "even" ....lightswitches were a killer ( had to flick them on/off 2-3 times with each hand)...
oh and checking to make sure the doors are locked at night...i check them at least a few times before im comfortable that they are in fact locked...
spiders freak me out...for example: if I spot one in my bedroom and it gets away before i can kill it ~ shivers ~ I wont be able to sleep in the room for days!!!
also clowns....I watched the movie "IT" by Steven King when I was a kid...ever since then I have been terrified of clowns.

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 10:11:06 PM | Phobias:
Spiders.. most other bugs as well Small, tight spaces (elevators for example) Heights Tripping off the sidewalk and falling into traffic (no clue where this came from) Sleeping with my closet doors open
Idiosyncrasies:
Sniffing my apartment and any common areas to make sure there is no fire (this comes from dealing with 2 fires in 2 different buildings I lived in within 18 months of each other.. it's been over a year and I still do this)
For pretty much the same reason as above: Making sure my cat carrier is super super handy at ALL times so that I (hopefully) don't have to leave my cats behind Making sure my purse is in my bedroom, very close to my bed.. just in case and making sure my cell phone is in there too
I can't bring myself to pile things up on top of each other in my fridge or my cupboards - this is not a space conserving household at ALL - it does get to the point where I have no choice, but I get all freaked out about it
|
| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 10:44:37 PM | | hahahaha, yeah! thanks for the reminder lin1982, when locking up the shop at night I can double and triple check the doors. | |

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 11:06:30 PM | Leeches! I've never had one on me but the Bogart scene in African Queen gives me the heebie jeebies more than any modern horror flick.
Noticeable makeup on a woman. However beautiful she might be to others or herself, it's a total turn off for me. I used to try to rationalize this, but have come to accept that it's just a quirk of mine.

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/23/2009 11:21:24 PM | I'm bedeviled by smileys and/or emoticons... Little pac-men who grew limbs, assumed grotesque shapes and guises, and escaped from the maze...
They know I know they're all evil little bastids; yet they flagrantly seize every opportunity to mock me....
There; I said it... To hell with my bid for Supreme Court Justice....

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/24/2009 6:43:49 PM | I honestly can't think of too many logical phobias. I mean, I don't want to drown, but I love the water, yet don't know how to swim. I don't want to die falling from a great height, but I want to go in a hot air balloon and I loved being in a plane! I used to have a terrible fear of bees, if I saw one flying around I would go to where I could that they were not. That fear disappeared a few years ago.
Idiosyncrasies: I can not sleep without an opening for my feet from my blanket. They are kept covered, but I have to have the availability to not have them covered, or else its a bad 'confined' feeling. I've had that as far back as I can remember. Even if I am in a sleeping bag, its open to the bottom. The only time I find this is not a concern is when I am passed out drunk.

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/24/2009 6:55:24 PM | Phobias:
- Arachnids - Fire ants - Dentist - Hospitals - Bees. - No.. forget about that. Just about any insect scares me. Sue me. - Minor social anxiety - Crossing highways
Idiosyncrasies:
- When doing the dishes, I only grab one piece of silverware at the time because the sound of friction between other pieces of silverware makes me want to have a seizure. - I can't sleep all that well without.. my stuffed Tails plush. Again, sue me if you must.
Also, when I was younger, I felt like I had to be 100% still when sleeping because of demons swarming above me that couldn't hear sounds but could detect even the slightest body movements. God, I miss my childhood...

That reminded me. When I was young and convinced there were monsters in the dark, I had it figured out that as long as I was completely covered from my neck down and had my eyes closed, I was safe. I could not have my hands or arms outside of the blankets. It's funny because I still feel most comfortable sleeping that way, but at least it's no longer a requirement. LOL
|
| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/25/2009 8:02:18 AM | Phobias:
Snakes (even seeing one on TV freaks me out) Sharks (huge fear of being shark bait) Being in or on the ocean (swimming or in a boat - why? See above phobia)
Idiosyncracies:
Cupboard doors left open... I HAVE to shut them. Alarm clock - gotta hit that snooze at least twice, usually 3 times before I get up. Short term memory problems - I can be mid sentence and something grabs my attention and I completely forget what I was saying. This drives my daughter NUTS!!!

I remember being young and being convinced that a tiger had crawled underneath my bed. Too many Esso adverts as a little un.
It's not a phobia but I don't feel easy with feet, they kinda freak me out.

| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/25/2009 11:21:17 AM | Large dogs, although I have gotten over it somewhat. I wouldn't exactly call it an irrational fear as I have been seriously bitten twice, including once on my face that required a number of stitches.
Ladders. I cannot climb ladders with less than 4 legs on the ground. The 2-3 step painting ladders are fine, but getting up on a roof is next to impossible for me (once on the roof, I'm fine).
The most serious would be fire extinguishers. Long story behind this one, but I would most likely not be able to stop myself from seriously hurting anyone who sprayed me with one (again). Just holding one near me sets off my sympathetic 'fight' response.
|
| Phobias and idiosyncrasies Posted: 6/25/2009 12:20:56 PM | Primates really freak me out, especially baboons!!
I also have to use a mechanical tooth brush because using a manual one makes me very uncomfortable. I think it's a combo of the sound and feeling of the brush in my mouth against my teeth and gums. Fortunatly spin-brushes were invented!!
