From a newletter I received.....

Organisations are being warned to be vigilant against a suspected swindler who recently attempted to defraud the Jack and Jill Children's Foundation. The organisation received an email from a 'prospective donor' called Ryan Robinson, informing them that he intended to donate €25,000. 'Mr Robinson' asked Jack and Jill to issue three cheques of €5000 each to three separate charities in Ghana. The organisation did not respond to the offer, but the sneaky swindler sent them a €25,000 HSBC bank draft. 'Mr Robinson' followed up with a call and email, but Jack and Jill refused to act on his instructions. HSBC later revealed that the draft was in fact bogus. The incident has been reported to the Gardai.

I know there is a great website (whos name escapes me) that attempts to scam the scammer which cheers me up no end but is that it? Does anyone know if these scammers are caught, do they get lenghty jail sentences? Have to pay the money back? Or is it culturally acceptable in some parts of Africa for this scamming to continue and prosper?

I'd hate to think that they prosper Saemurph...I wonder how many relatively intelligent people would actually fall for something like that...it begs the question are there people out there that do actually think it's for real ...considering it's going on all the time. Surely these scammers wouldn't be bothered putting out the bait if there were no bites...
I received a very official looking letter once saying that I had won a large sum of money in a foreign lottery and would I send my bank details so they could logde the money in my account ...I mean pleeese!!I laughed and threw it in the bin ...alerted the gardai about it ,and they said yeah those letters are being sent all the time...Id hate to think of some old person or someone not so bright being caught like this...it's a cruel world....To answer your question this garda told me when I asked him the same thing...said it's impossible to even track them down not mind actually punishing them...these guys are well under the radar ..and will carry on regardless I guess...Now the website that scams the scammer...that sounds doable

I remembered some of the name and googled..:-)

The scam baiting site is called 419eater.com, a good read if nothing else..

There was a programme on bbc just last week about people being scammed, mostly older people with money. One woman who since died would not listen to her daughter about the scams and was receiving hundreds of letters a week. I suppose we'll only see the tip of the iceberg though as no one likes to admit they've been conned.
