Here is a problem I seem to be having:

I have avast installed and honestly I really hate it. I have a Hp Pavilion DV6000 that lags the WTF out when ever it feels and I also have a Hp Pavilion DV7 1030 with a few extras and sometimes it WTF lags out. Oh that will be my game that is lagging and in a FPS that is the last thing I need.

I want to get rid of the Avast, so what is everyone else using and how do you like it? Is there something I can do to help avast not be such a memory muncher. I just got avast and it bugs me beyond all belief.

Is there a website they you all go to that helps with tweeks and and what not?!

I never had an issue with AVAST! Google is your friend and I am not sure what to tell you...... haha! Now, in all seriousness, what type of tweaking are you trying to do? Software I imagine since your laptops cannot be tweaked hardware wise. What FPS are we talking about here? I want to know a bit more, not Avast sucks and it is a memory hog because I have not experienced anything as such...

Linux & I love it...lol

Actually, In my Windows box I use Kaspersky & I give Avast or AVG to my clients who don't want to pay (w/Malwarebytes-MBAM)

PC-Tools AV doesn't use as many resources but not as good detection

try disabling any power saving modes you have.

Funny thing is, on a dell laptop a friend has, his son was experiencing extreme lag, as soon as we disabled the power saving modes (even the ones when he was plugged in) it worked fine.

This was under windows vista, not windows xp.

DK06 is right. In my opinion the best Anti-virus is Kaspersky and Second place goes to Eset Nod32. Kaspersky is a little heavy on resources but worth the protection. Eset is light weight and fast at scanning. As of Tuesday, Microsoft has released a beta version of there free to customers Anti-virus software. That is all ways an option. Personally, I will wait till after beta since Microsoft has a tendency to releases software riddled with bugs.

I've been bouncing between kaspersky and nod32 myself.

NOD32 doesn't use that many resources, but I find it lacks on finding trojans, even the old inforstealer.gamepass that norton products easily pick up, it fails to detect.

Kaspersky on the other hand, I love it, but ditched it because of resources, as stated before.

I remember when AVP was out, and it used the kaspersky engine, would have the bat scream sound when it detected a virus, THAT WAS AWESOME and it was another low resource user, but sadly, it has gone away.

I still like AVG, but am finding the latest version a bit of a memory gobbler, too, these days.

I downloaded AVAST, but soon went back to AVG.

I use and stand by Kaspersky. As to the Pavillion, I'd never buy an HP computer (or, or course any Compaq or Gateway).

Never heard of wasbi but i've tried wubi and it works very well

http://wubi-installer.org/

Wubi is an officially supported Ubuntu installer for Windows users that can bring you to the Linux world with a single click. Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu as any other Windows application, in a simple and safe way. Are you curious about Linux and Ubuntu? Trying them out has never been easier!

Wubi is Simple

No need to burn a CD. Just run the installer, enter a password for the new account, and click "Install", go grab a coffee, and when you are back, Ubuntu will be ready for you.

Wubi is Safe

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application. Wubi is free of spyware and malware, and being open source, anyone can verify that.

Wubi is Discrete

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Wubi is Free

Wubi and Ubuntu cost absolutely nothing (free as in beer), but yet provide a state of the art, fully functional, operating system that does not require any activation and does not impose any restriction on its use (free as in freedom).

I use Avast because I had the resource problem with AVG. In addition Avast, I use CCleaner, HiJackThis, and MalwareBytes to clean out other crap. Process Explorer is also a handy tool for sniffing out active spyware that might be running.

avast ...... eew personally i'm using mcafee but only cause it's free for comcast customers. my normal protection of choice was Norton. but again not the new ones i'm still running norton 2000 and i can't complain. i personally have never had any good luck with those avast and avg types. JMO

Says the guy with McAfee and Norton. McAfee is not so bad, but Norton is a resource hog to the nth degree... Maybe they have change, but last time I checked/read anything about them; there were the same way. Do you even game?

i used to lightly when i was younger. but now i build computer systems for DJ's and VJ's . my current software of choice alone is a super memory hog. and a major processor hog, seeing it loads song/video into memory and does not utilize the hard drive at all during playback, yet has a nice dual monitor mode. but to answer your question no i don't game anymore

I think the obvious common denominator here is HP. HP puts so much crap programing on their computer that you can never figure out what is conflicting with what. I've used NOD32 for four years now and could not ask for better virus protection. If a customer brings a computer into our shop and insist on one of the free programs, we normally recommend Avast, Avir or Kapersky. Many times on an HP we have to try a few different ones before we find one that won't conflict with HP's junk.

I'll second that!
HP/Compaq is all-around pretty sh;tty. I regret buying my HP laptop and I prefer not to work on or with them.

Also, HP gets the 1st place award for putting the most crapware on a new machine.
