Beating the heat at our agePage 1 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
Soo hot here lately and this morning I put on my short shorts to run over to the bank very early.. Needed to get some dollars for my sister who is going to be buying me something I wanted downtown today..

So I was wondering how many women my age still wear short shorts.. They do feel so wonderful in this hot weather we are having now..

Usually will wear Bermuda shorts but these are soo much cooler.. How do you all stay cool in this hot weather? Wear a sunhat, short shorts, spaghetti strap tops, headbands soaked in freezing cold water??

The heat is on..

You appear slim enough that you can probably still wear short shorts. I don't wear short shorts anymore -- 7-9" inseam at least! How do I stay cool? Air conditioning, shade, minimize movement, cool basements, drink lots of water! Wear loose fitting clothing... and I avoid sun as much as possible! I do the same things I did 45 years ago, except the air-conditioning -- didn't have that when I was younger!

Sleeping naked... I'm kidding!

I use short shorts only in my yard.Everywhere is AC...to feel cool enough.
Anyway...I love "capris"!

Well, it is cold and rainy today on the West coast, but yes I still wear short shorts and a skimpy top when it is hot, especially if I am out walking. I'll even run to the groc store in them. Don't much care what others think, it's what I think.

First I would love to see you in short shorts, but if I lived where you live I would be wearing a coat all year round. What is your deffinition of hot? Hell I think 60 is cold and 85 is normal, and where do you get freezing cold water?

Honestly though wear what is comfortable for you, don't worry about what others do. You look good enough that no one will complain about what you are wearing, (well maybe jelous women).

No daisy dukes for me, not even in my 20s. Summertime is when I wear dresses --- mostly light sleeveless dresses with sandals. Unlike winter, you don't need stockings or tights under a summer dress.

Summer is my least-favorite season. Luckily where I live now isn't too humid, but I still love winter most.

That is it I am a distance walker so will be out in the sun for hours.. I also bring ice water with me soak my headband in ice.. However the headband dries out rather quickly within the first 30 minutes so am wondering if there are other gems that people use.

Part of the problem is I am not used to the heat being in the cold most of the year. Then come from air conditioning into a lot of heat. I do my walking later on in the afternoon or very early in the am..

Not beign female, and loving heat in the 90s, i might be the wrong person entirly to comment. but personally i think a gal should wear what feels good to her. if you are embarrassed or somehow dont feel right wearing the stuff then ask yourself why. if its simply a hang up about morality then decide if its worth it. if your concerned about propriety then ask yourself again is it worth being uncomfortable just because of what people i dont know might think of me. personally i wear shorts and t shirts or tanks all the time in the summer. i despense with the shirt pretty often too. hey im old, and not the best looking dude around AND I DONT CARE ! its all about being me and if people dont like it its just ok. wear what you feel girl, dont let the world change you cause your the only person who can be you.

Hot to me is over 80 degrees, and I get freezing cold water by putting it in the freezer and pulling it out before totally frozen.. The trouble with heat is you cannot exactly disrobe. With cold weather you can easily layer you clothes and wear high tech long johns..

I do not like it when the temps go over 80..

Kitty you can disrobe, in fact in some cases it might be fun but i guess you cant do it so much in public, mores the pity ms kitty. but for this old dude i have not had the ac on in six years of living on my own and hate the "air conditioning hell" most folks around here do. Never understood hoosier idea of putting the ac at fifty in the summer and the heat at 80 in the winter.

where do you get freezing cold water

I am fortunate that I live in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and our city water comes from the mountain springs and rivers. You can't get much fresher than that and, yes, our water is drinkable right from the taps. The city does add fluoride to our water. Although some people buy bottled water, tests have been done on our water with the result being that the water from our taps is just as good, if not better, than the bottled waters.

Capris and t-shirt. (too fat looking for shorts and/or skimpy shirts)
Hair tied back. Bare feet. (slip on my Birkenstocks to go in a store)
Love being outside.
I keep bottles of water in freezer.. grab one when I go out. Stick it in a 'wrap around'. Slowly it melts, keeping me with cold water while out.
Then there is the AC in home.. love that too!

Know what? They make every wheelchair with black armrests and black seats and seat backs! (except a few grey hospital chairs)
BLACK!
I have a $3,000 wheelchair, but could I order a different color armrest, seat, or back when I got it? Nope, there aren't any.
In summer.. do you know how hot black armrests get?

Thanks to hot flashes for the last 16 years, anything over 40 degrees is too warm for me. I used to sleep in a room so cold that you could see your breath. I may consider a move to the Arctic Circle. Seventeen degrees is comfortable for me.

I don't deal well with heat, even though I used to love it. I drink lots of water and become a night-owl in the summer.

Even when I was younger, I never wore short-shorts (although I did have a pair of satin “hot pants” once in the early 70’s---*GAK*). To beat the heat, I wear tank tops, cotton tees and skirts; sexy, cool and breezy skirts that don’t have the added Northern Exposure of asscheekiness.

Well the bonus of living in the deep freeze is you age slower.. lol Probably because we spend so much of our time on ice.. lol

I usually go for a swim in my salt water pool after I get back, but that does not feel cold enough for me. I think a cold shower would be better.

Short shorts, eh? Sounds like I should hit the jogging paths more often.

On the other hand, the only time I feel really comfortable jogging is in January and February. It gets too hot any other time of the year. I have not thought of jogging as a spectator sport, but considering the short shorts idea, perhaps its time to change my mind....:)

Sophie, I can so relate to your post!!! I've already warned Paul to be prepared. I cannot and will not live without A/C and I like it very cool! And a ceiling fan additionally over the bed!

108 in Phoenix yesterday, no way around it (its freakin hot). fortunately there is a circle K on every corner, everything is air conditioned, plenty of swimming pools, outdoor hydration misters, and most everything social starts after the sun goes down. even the water fountains in the parks are refrigerated.
love it when it gets hotter cuz the shirts, skirts and shorts get shorter

Well, I do wear shorts at my age but they are nothing such as hot-pants or bermudas either; something in between ... really.

Finding myself anywhere with 26 degrees Celsius and above - light cotton sleeveless dress will do the job. Of course, the lenght goes just above the knees.
Plain water or cold water melon would be my choice for clenching thirst.

OMG I could not even go out in that period.. Not unless there was a pool I could jump right into after stepping out. What the heck to do you hibernate indoors?

Ottawa gets very hot and humid during the summer and while I resisted for as long as I could, I finally gave in last week and bought an air conditioner - I love it!!!

Now I'm wondering why in hell (literally) I waited so long and why I get so hung up on a principle (fresh air is better, air conditioning is for wimps blah blah blah)....honestly, I sometimes drive myself crazy with my silly rules and "principles"...anyway, menopause (aka severe hot flashes/night sweats) made a wimp out of me and now it's crank that mother down and let there be ice baby!!!
