Differences between American and Colombian Women
Posted: 6/26/2009 7:37:37 AM
I just got back from a three-week vacation in Cartagena, Colombia, and I had the time of my life. I met dozens of women, just talking to them in shops, at the airport, in restaurants, just walking around. I dated probably twelve women, from 28 to 56, and, even then, I got plenty of (inappropriate) attention from women much younger than I am. I should point out that I speak fluent Spanish.

Some people would like to say that this is because of the novelty factor. Maybe so, but I don't think the economic factor is an issue, because all of the women I met, indeed, most of those who have access to foreigners are from the more privileged classes and have very comfortable lives.

What completely disarmed me was the sheer approachability of the women. They expected to be approached by men, and appeared to be flattered, even if they were married or not interested.

Colombian women appear to be interested in average men in a way that American women are not. The vibe I get from a lot of American women is "if he doesn't loosen my fillings, I'd rather stay at home and rearrange my closet. Life is too short to waste on unexceptional men." When I talk to many, if not most, American women, I get the feeling I am being weighed in the balance and being found wanting. I never once got this treatment from Colombian women. Maybe they are just more charming liars.

Now, as a truly unexceptional man (a little more literate than most, but physically less impressive), it is like Paradise to be in a place where average men are not just tolerated, but celebrated.

Yes, women of different cultures do 'behave' differently (in general).
Yes, you may be a wonderful man.

Okay, that out of the way.
Now... Colombia? You, an American?
I wonder how many Colombian women have a thought of some sort about wanting to live in USA and you represent a touch with that thought?
I'll leave it at that.

p.s. when I go out.. I am cheerful and friendly and encouraging with everyone.. believe me! Men/women of all ages/sizes/whatever. So I'm not counted in with the "american women" you mention. ALTHOUGH I do somewhat agree, 'cos I see how many other women are when 'out and about'.

In your profile you describe yourself as a couch potato who doesn't like physical activity, fidgets a lot, has borderline obsessive behavior, has unreasonably high standards when it comes to women, and a hyper discriminating visual palate. This doesn't seem average, and it seems that you are judging women far more harshly than they may be judging you for not having a manly physique.

I haven't been to Columbia, but I have traveled a bit. I do think it is the novelty value in part. Also, I have lived in a country with an economy similar to that of Columbia. My female associates there were all from the upper, privileged class and were educated and very attractive. They would automatically be drawn to a North American or British man because these men treat women better than the men of their own country and because, especially if the woman is an educated professional, she can have a much better career experience in Britain or North America with her credentials. I would imagine these women were fairly fluent in English; if not, they were probably not of the upper class after all.

There is no paradise anywhere in the world where younger, extremely attractive individuals go against type en mass and flow towards members of the opposite sex who are not attractive. Like attracts like, in most cases, universally. Highly intelligent people are attracted to highly intelligent people. Very physical people are attracted to very physical people. Etc. That includes looks.

I think Ismene hit all the nails on the head. I agree with everything she said.

I also agree with CassaGo. Where is the question you want answered? I don’t see one. Maybe you are just inviting comments.

Your thread seems like an attempt to belittle American women, whine because you don’t get the action and attention you would like at home in the US and to brag about your manly escapades in Columbia.

Okay, I'm right there with Breath, Ismene, CassaGo and Barbi. What is the point to this post? You had a great time in Colombia. Good for you! If you find the women there so attractive and available, and you speak fluent Spanish, you may want to consider retiring there. Sounds like it would be your 'dream cum true'.

No me parece mala la idea. A los hombres nos gusta estar apreciados, no calumniados.

Just practicing a little free trade, you know, that opening of markets whereby we are all supposed to benefit from the competition. Bashing the customer for preferring a cheaper, better import over an overpriced domestic model was exactly the tack that Detroit took in the 1970s and we can all see what a great strategy that was.

Actually, this post was more for the guys than for y'all women anyway. Spanish isn't that hard to learn. I got from 0 to near-native in about 3 years

Bashing the customer for preferring a cheaper, better import
This is the type of thing that really pi**es me off. NOBODY IS BASHING ANYBODY. And I don't give a friggin' flying duck who you prefer. I read your profile and wouldn't have you on a platinum platter lined with 1000 dollar bills. I stated an opinion. Stating an opinion is not bashing, and trust me, oh do trust me on this one, jealousy is not the issue. I wrote an intelligent response to your blathering about how much these women were into you...lord almighty, get a brain. There is not a paradise anywhere in the world where younger, beautiful, intelligent, rich women go for geeks just because. There is a reason. As well, it also applies to women. I lived for two years in a country where I could have had my pick of handsome, very handsome, young men who were soooo, soooo into me....yep. Get a friggin brain buster. And no one was slandering you. Maybe that is why you don't get along with American women, because they have opinions and you can't tell the difference between an opinion and criticism.

Oh, and BTW, if these women you are speaking of don't speak English, they are not upper class, educated women. That I do know, and it applies around the world.

I agree that maybe you should move to Columbia. 12 dates in 3 weeks, methinks thou just wanted to brag!

I have been in three countries other than my own, Mexico, Australia and Canada. I have met people from many other countries. My conclusion: Men are men, women are women. Some like skinny, some like large, some like dark, some blond, tall, short. Blah blah blah. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. People cannot be generalized!!

And by the way, it's Rubenesque not Rubensian!

Seriously, the OP sounds like a prime candidate for a foreign mail-order bride!

I may not be having the best of luck, but I'll stick to North American women! The best are right here!

I don't think you really can make comparisons but there's nothing wrong if you prefer one culture's offerings to another. Heck!! I moved away from Canada years ago and married into another culture too and there was a lot I liked about it. Great way...the best way!!.... to learn another language !

Hola Geekito...

Now this is about opening markets and free trade? Competition? Customers? And you’re calling the Columbia women CHEAPER better imports? You’re calling American women overpriced domestic models?

I thought it was about people NOT commodities. Is this the vibe you give off when looking for a prospective mate/partner? “Let’s throw open the hood and have a ‘look-see’. Let’s see if this is a good enough ‘ride’ for me?”

You’ve now managed to insult both American AND Columbian women.

And whilst you may have meant this as a thread directed towards men…needless to say woman are going to read it and respond. Especially when you are bashing American women. We have this freedom of speech and expression thing here in the US. Of course if you didn’t want women to respond…then I guess you could have said “MEN ONLY”. But then again, the women would have responded anyway…LOL

As for your ability to learn Spanish so quickly and to be so fluent. Bravo!!! Now if you could just learn to interact with women graciously. I myself truly enjoy languages and whilst I am fluent only in English, I have quickly and easily picked up enough of several different languages to “get me by” while travelling. Somehow being fluent in another language doesn’t mean you are desirable as a potential mate or that you have the people skills to deal graciously with others.

Possibly it was your attitude using your new found language skills and being out of your daily element that made the difference in your luck with the ladies.

Learn from your new found success with the ladies. Look back and study how you where able to have all these dates in just 3 weeks in Columbia then use similar technics here and you should do just fine.

Folks are Folks no matter where you live. Differences can be that in the bigger cities some don't like to make eye contact with or talk to strangers. Where as in some of the more rural areas things tend to be more laid back and some just don't ever meet a stranger.

I think the other's have good advice. One might do good to with an open mind re-read there answer's.

I almost hate to reply to this thread now as I am actually starting to feel sorry for it's originator but what the hey, I can't do any more harm and when I get done typing someone may just find it enlightening.

I too, examined your profile, your picture and this epiphany you have decided to share. I have come to the conclusion that perhaps it is the way you present yourself to the American women and to those in Columbia.

If you are anything like your internet profile in real life, I have no doubt that you have been shunned by (American) women most of your life, have come to expect it and act accordingly.

I somehow think you went to Columbia armed with your knowledge of the language and portrayed a man of confidence, perhaps flirting and smiling a little at the women whom you hoped would not be like the American women you have come to fear.

Confidence is sexy in any language.
Fear...we can smell.

"Spanish isn't that hard to learn"

So maybe if you are serious OP, you might want to improve your Spanish.

I have been living with the Cuban people several times a year for over a decade. Try that and then if you still like living in Colombia, go for it. There is a huge difference between a vacation and real life.

Yes, women are different in different countries, just as men are. Retire where it suits you. I will be retiring 6 months in Canada and 6 month in Cuba..............happiness is having the courage to do what you say you want to do.

He darn sure was hoping they were NOT like American,English,UK, etc..
He wanted the ones could not read, uneducated, poor, and
do ANYthing to get out of where they were / are.....
And to top it off...
In your post you say...

I have no doubt that you have been shunned by (American) women most of your life,

I have absolutly NO doubt those are the
TRUEST words I've seen on POF in a while..!!
I'm outta here before I get banned or bumped..
And I too read his profile...
No wonder he went to Columbia..!!!!
I'm off this thread for good.. it's a waste of time..

Am I the only one who sees this thread and the OP's profile to be somewhat of a gag to incite reaction?

To compare the female population of a somewhat impoverished country to the United States (or Canada for that matter) is a little bit unrealistic. The citizens of countries such as Colombia may very well desire to latch on to anything that they think might provide an escape to a much better life and standard of living as opposed to being truly ga-ga over one North American male.
