| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/29/2009 5:50:39 PM | Recently I have been diagnosed with arthritis, which as told by the doctors came as a reaction after a flu or was caused by a virus.I also wonder if this mild flu I had was a swine flu and seems there is no way to find out :(
Now the pain is not going away from my arms and legs and since I never had this before I am wondering when is going to stop hurting, now it is much less then when it just started but the pain is still there.
Has anyone in here had the infamous swine flu and pain in the bones as a result of it?

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/29/2009 6:05:27 PM | I recently discovered a large pimple on my left buttock and so I too am concerned that this may be a symptom of swine flu.
Obviously I've emailed Sky News to ask them how worried I should. But, so far I'm still waiting for a response.

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/29/2009 6:14:46 PM | Arthritis is in the joints, especially the joints of the arms and legs. It can be caused by many things: genetics, age, weight, previous injury, high level sports, some occupational hazard (such as with construction workers), and yes, illness or infection, such as a joint infection, gout, etc.
The symptoms for Lime Disease caused by the bite of a tick is a flu like episode followed by aches and pains in the legs and arms not necessarily in the joints. You might want to ask your doctor about being tested for that.

Of course, I'm not a doctor.
Good luck with it. | |

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 12:45:06 AM | | You'd definitely know if you had flu. I had it once and i couldn't move, was delirious and felt like i was dying. I've got a touch of arthritis in my wrist from an old injury. It aches a lot and get's quite painful in cold weather. Viral arthritis can go just as quick as it appears. | |

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 12:57:00 AM | thanks kath :) I have already seen that.been looking into the area of arthritis a lot but getting more and more confused.
What the doctor who called me said after looking into test results is that she believes it is caused by the flu, as they are overwhelmed by the flu cases etc, and this is the common factor following the flu and the area is full if the flu. I only had sneezing and feeling generally unwell but no coughing and no chest infection etc.
What I am interested to know is if this is going to go away forever or I will now have arthritis episodes after this first episode?
Re lyme. this is not very common here in London

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 1:30:01 AM | i do have dodgy knees .. but i also have long legs ... and my left shoulder stopped working about a year ago, it was jolly painful, couldn't sleep or shower properly, aparently it was frozen, didn't feel cold though, my GP sent me to have it checked out and i ended up having accupuncture which was an odd experience, i'm not sure how sticking a needle in the top of my head was going to help my shoulder but i kept an open mind, albeit with a pin sticking out of it !
it didn't work ... i quite enjoyed it though ... but i wouldn't reccoment it for joint pain

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 1:30:14 AM | I have had arthritis in both knees since i was in my late 20s.My doctor told me to keep my weight down and keep mobile.Over the years i haven,t had too much problem but since the fall i had 6 weeks ago where i landed on both knees and gave them a bashing i have had pain and aching when the weather has been damp. Alma you need to keep mobile and there are things you can take to ease stiffness.Once it calms down though i,m afraid you will get flare ups from time to time. You could ask your doctor for a bone density scan too to rule out osteoporosis. | |

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 1:45:50 AM | i have not had swine flu but have had the flu twice you would know if you had the flu as opposed to a cold with the flu somebody could come into your room tip a load of money on the floor and you would not be able to get up and get it flu can kill you.
as for the pain in the bones i get this alot and my doctor has said its to do with my bad back if its in the joints its probably arthritis if its a deep pain in the bones then go to your doctor again and get checked for bone cancer or osteoperosis although with osteoporosis you tend not to get pain. if the symptoms are after an illness its usually called viral shock and takes a couple of years to get over it

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 2:15:16 AM | OP - you're probably better off in the forums on the following site: http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/Home At least they'll know what they're talking about | |

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 2:23:06 AM | I just have two questions and these are when this pain is expected to stop and if this means I would now always have arthritis but it is hard to get to the doctor just to ask questions like this.
I found out from arthritis research campaign that reactive arthritis lasts up to 6 months and also it doesn't produce higher risk of reappearing. http://www.arc.org.uk/arthinfo/patpubs/6034/6034.asp
Re the flu, I had a flu twice and it was really bad, as someone described here already but this time it was more like a cold so not sure in anything

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 2:48:02 AM | I have arthritis in the thumb joint on my right hand and it can be pretty painful, especially first thing in the morning. I find alfalfa tablets help a lot.
there are things you can take to ease stiffness
There are things you can take to increase it as well, but I think that belongs in another thread!

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 2:59:48 AM | Ive got a dodgy left knee but the quacks tell me its just general wear an tear...taking cod liver oil tabs has helped..as it does with all joints.
I dare say in a few years things will catch up with me and will be in a bit of a state..but until then

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 4:24:12 AM | I think I had the swine flu abt a week ago, but as your supposed to stay away from your DR's...I guess I'll never know for certain..?
My symptoms were fever, feeling of malaise, severe sore throat in trachea and chest area, very tired still a week later.
It fits with what I've read and I think its more broken out across the country than the media are saying.

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 10:59:06 AM | I'm worried about suffering from arthritis in later life as I have broken a few bones, but I don't seem to be suffering yet.
Swine flu is just a new strain of regular human flu. I have only ever had flu once - I was 14 and it was hell. I was in constant pain for two weeks, had a nasty fever, sore throat and felt really ill. It was nothing like having a cold.
|
| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 11:32:31 AM | I often wake up a little stiff in the morning and can need a good 2 hours to loosen up.
Being serious now
I very much doubt you have swine flu OP unless you have been on holiday to Mexico?
Its quite common for people with ordinary influenza to have painful joints so don't worry!
If things don't improve then a mild course of anti biotics from your GP will help sort you out.

Swine flu is quite contagious, altho in order to catch it you have to have been within very close proximity of someone who has been diagnosed positive with it. I(t is like having a very nasty dose of the flu, it is only serious or life threatening in those who are immuno supressant, have respiritory problems or have a longstanding history of ill health; you may have noticed that all the people who have died from swinge flu died from complications - the swine flu was a contribuatary factor to their death but they were already seriously unwell.
There IS a way of diagnosing Swine flu, it just takes a simple swab of the throat, usually done by your Gp or a Healthcare professional. due to the overwhelming increase in cases however Gp's and Doctors are just commencing individuals on the medication required to treat Swine flu if they present with the symptoms (sore throat, fever, nausea, diahorrea, aching limbs....)
OT I dont have Arthritis & despite Swine Flu being rife in the area i live, working in the care sector and encountering many people with Swine flu i havent contracted it *touches wood* My niece was commenced on treatment for it tho as she was showing signs of it as was my mother!

| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 2:51:01 PM | | Alma, unfortunately you are at the age when rheumatoid arthritis typically starts. It is an auto-immune disorder which basically means your immune system attacks the fluid found in joint spaces. It also affects your tendons and ligaments as they are lubricated by the same type of fluid found in the joints. I suffer from rheumatoid and osteoarthritis so if you have any questions feel free to mail me. Be guided by your GP and the hospital consultant as they do know best. The Arthritis Research Centre (ARC) have an excellent web site for most of your questions. By the way the pain and stiffness never goes away but it can be controlled by a combination of drugs. | |
|
| Anyone here with arthritis? Or swine flu? Posted: 6/30/2009 3:06:39 PM | I have osteo-arthritis in my lower spine so not the same as you have. Some rheumatoid arthritis can indeed be caused by a virus. If you have rheumatoid then it can be diagnosed with a blood test and there are various drug therapies available to keep it manageable.
No swine flu but possible mad cow's disease
