| Anybody here like the films of David Cronenberg? Posted: 6/30/2009 8:31:51 PM | | For some weird reason, I have been on a Cronenberg-binge this past week. I've just been watching as much Cronenberg as possible, especially the stuff he made before "Naked Lunch." I just bought the two disc Criterion of "Videodrome," one of my all time favorite movies, and I think it's awesome. His older stuff from Canada like "The Brood" and "Shivers" are also goo, but very disgusting. And personally, I think his version of "The Fly" is much better than the old one with Vincent Price. | |

I loved Dead Ringers, Videodrome, Shivers, Existenz & when he played the evil doctor in the mask in Nightbreed ... terrifying!

His version of THE FLY is one of the few remakes that actually improves on the original. I have really liked his most recent work as well (i.e. A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and EASTERN PROMISES).
I wrote about him in my book on Science Fiction Film Directors.

As soon as I saw this thread I thought "Nightbreed". I am definitely a fan of his directorial work. But, it's that crazy Dr. role I always think about when I see his name.

I remember watching Videodrome at the Valhalla in Northcote and being so delighted it was the uncut version (as opposed to the cut version released on video).
But I have been disappointed by his films since Crash - while they are good, they lack the special Cronenberg qualities I enjoyed in the 70s and 80s.
A History of Violence and Eastern Promises were just good gangster movies.
Will Cronenberg make one more special Cronenberg film?

I've not seen some of his movies (Crash, for instance) but generally I don't think he's a first-tier director. I've never understood what everybody sees in his Fly remake, to me it's underplotted and overwrought.
P.S. To be fair, I usually enjoy watching Cronenberg movies, I just don't think they're great art. Given that I'll admit I'm possibly being a bit harsh.
