Single parent brag!

So within the past week I bought myself a new car and managed not to get screwed and with the rest of the insurance money from the A-hole who totaled my last car, my tax season bonus and my tax refund I should have it paid off by next year!

And....

I just refinanced my home saving myself almost 3 % interest (interest rates were HIGH in 2000 when I bought) and knocking off another 5 years ($35,000) and going with a 15 year mortgage!

And yes, I know I am married but his name is not tied to either one of these! It's all in my name, on my credit and with my income!! It took a lot of years to get myself financially stable after the divorce but I did it. And I did more the last 2 years with my daughter then I did in the other 7 years!

See!!! We aren't all gold diggers or broke!

Oh and feel free to brag yourself :) I would love to see a post about what single parents do right instead of all the ones telling us what we do wrong.

Well I know there was one to brag on your kids but not on ourselves and our accomplishments.

And on that note I would like to add that I graduate with my BS in Accounting on August 29th also lol

My car will be paid off in December and I still am as in love with it as the day I drove it off the lot with only 12 miles on the odometer. It now has 111,000 miles on it, has never had a major maintenance problem or been wrecked (knock on wood).

I was lucky to not have to stablize my finances after the divorce but I had spent the past 10 years putting it back together after he bankrupted us back in 1995. I actually chose to refinance the house and borrow its full value (paid $12,000 down on it originally) in order to buy him out of his share of the equity and tap the rest to supplement my income as needed so I could remain where I was and the girls could graduate with their friends.

Where there's a will, there's a way.

That's awesome! Is it $80,000 for the land AND construction? Surely not.

Having a car paid off is sooo nice! Ironically I had just had my car paid off, with it being paid on my own, and love the car, it got totalled with my daughter, nephew, and I in it, luckily we were safe from harm, but the car wasn't. I then had to use my mom's car and take over the payment, high payment for 3 years. And in March 2010, it will be paid off!

^^^^ D*** the luck! I guess you dropped the fuller coverage when you paid it off, huh? D***ed if you do and d***ed if you don't sometimes. That sucks, but at least y'all were not injured.

yes,d ropped teh full coverage, grrr. figured what are the chances of me getting into an accident and have the car totalled on my end. lesson learned lol, it was really the front of the end that was damanged but not worth to fix since that's the value of the car in itself.

how sweet to get your own land and start a house from scratch! make sure you pamper yourself and get a big bathtub to soak in ;o)

I paid my car off in 2003, and its still going strong...wooohoo
1 more year and I will have my bachelor's degree, and I just found out I qualify for the post 9/11 GI Bill. Just finished Spring Quarter with a 3.6 gpa. I'm feeling pretty good. :)

I will definitely always keep my full coverage!! It's actually only like $520 for a 6 month policy so it seems silly to me not to.

Congrats on all the new cars! You're making me want to trade it up!! I've been eying that new Jetta like crazy... lol!!

I am so excited. I found out I hate so many things about the house I bought when I was 21, mostly that there are not near enough windows and the layout I thought I loved, I really don't like at all. It's going to be nice to live somewhere that nobody else has ever lived.

Ok...I'm trying really hard to think of something to brag about today. (It was one of those days) I got up at 3 am with my 6 year old who calmly informed me that he just threw up in his bed. I put the dirty bed clothes in the washing machine, and made his bed with fresh sheets with my eyes half closed. I got up again at 5am with the exact same scenario and did it all over again. Crawled back into bed and got up at 6am, took a shower, got dressed, and got the boys up. Gave Jakob some Immodium and got the baby dressed. Got the boys to daycare (said a silent prayer that Jakob would not get sick at daycare cuz I can't afford to take a day off), and rushed to work. Got to my job in time! Yay me!!! Visited with a client who informed me that she cannot find a job because she is single, gets no help from her kids' dad and does not want to put her kids in daycare. Another client informed me that with housing, food stamps, cash assistance, and energy assistance it doesn't pay for her to work. Managed to last until my smoke break before went off the deep end. Yay me!!! Balanced my checkbook on my lunch break. Wrote a check for rent, electric, car note, made sure I had enough for groceries, and was grateful I had enough left over to renew my car tags (the expired in June). Went back into work, visited with more clients, and watched the clock til 5pm. Fed my kids, bathed them, decorated my son's scooter for the big 4th of July parade at his school tomorrow with red, white and blue odds and ends around the house.

And here's my big brag....turned off the tv, put both boys in my bed, read The Kissing Hand three times and sang The Wheels on the Bus at least a dozen times. Got some snuggle time in before tucking my lil men into their beds.

P.S. My car won't be paid off until next May and I won't have my Bachelor degree for at least a year and a half. But I'll brag about that stuff when the time comes!

Hello ladies!!!! Here's a new one for you. I am a man who has raised my daughter by myself since she was 13 months old. Ww do alot together and I don't go drinking and party with my buddies. I take care of her and she is my life and priority. I have my own house and haven't lived with my mom or in her basement since I was 20. lol I actually was paying my parents house payment for them because of the troubled times they came across.I worked my way up from a grunt in the alarm and electronics industry and manage a wholesale distributor. I have a new SUV and a new Lexus sports car. I did all of it while being a single parent. Life is hard and that's why I work 2x's harder then the curve balls that get thrown at me so i can get ahead. Well hope this inspires people or men to do the right thing. It's not the easy way out it's the right way in.........to heaven!

I will have my car paid off in the next couple months. I make over 30k a year, I live in a house with 2 roomates in which I pay for. I am working on going back to school for business. I am just happy I don't rely on anyone for anything! No food stamps, welfare, or Metro here! BTW I am 20! Being a single parent at such a young age is difficult but doable! I hope this post gives everyone out there who is struggling a reason to become better. Don't ever settle for less than what you are worth!

After my ex and I split five years ago, I:

Went back to school and completed my BA with honours, on an accelerated schedule.

Got a good job in my field, with a "Cadillac" drug and dental plan for my babies and me (and even for my ex...lol).

Bought my own house.

Bought my own car (will be paid in 10 months, and saves me money on gas ' cause it's cute and little).

Number one child graduated for HS with honours, and then recently from university with an honours degree. His dad and I paid, so he has NO student debt.

Number two child graduated with honours from HS last week, and is heading off to university in Sept.

Number three child is still in HS, and recently told me that when it is just the two of us, in Sept, he will "take care of the house" for me. I am pretty sure he thinks grass-cutting is the main consideration, bless his little heart.

I have been able to look past my own personal feelings in order to maintain to forge a decent co-parenting relationship with the ex.

Okay, I am done bragging.

Thanks for the thread!

How does it make you feel hearing these excuses, considering what you go through everyday to support your children? Do you ever tell your clients what you go through when they tell you they won't work?
