| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 7/2/2009 12:07:04 PM | Pardon appeal for Micheal Shields has been refused to my mind for no good reason only Jack Straw wants to look tough on crime ( pity micheal didnt do this crime)
Mr Straw has now said he is unable to conclude the 22-year-old was "morally and technically innocent".
Dispite mersysides support for New & Old Labour , why do Labour continue to do dirty on Liverpool & north west ?
Mr Shields' father, Michael senior, said: "I just cannot believe the way he (Jack Straw) has done this. "They sent the letter straight to Michael alone in jail, not to his lawyer"
The family's solicitor, John Wheate, said: "It's a provisional no. Apparently we have a further 28 days to make representations. To get a pardon you have to get a higher degree of certainty and I think that's what they're talking about.
"But Jack Straw is hiding behind that."

So does that mean that all Scousers currently in prison should be freed just because they are likely to vote Labour?

Fair comment.........Straw has seen the evidence - I haven't.
Didn't Shields get picked out in the ID parade as being the one who tried to crush that bloke's head in Bulgaria?

Nooooooo......the other guy withdrew his 'confession', which isn't the same thing!
And how come Shields' website makes no reference to that withdrawn confession?
Funnily enough, his appeal has been based on the alleged infringement of his 'human rights'.......the last refuge of a criminal!
Let the guy serve his time - at least Liverpool will see a slight decline in the number of hub-cap thefts!

| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 7/2/2009 5:26:19 PM | Speaking as a person who has suffered the untold trauma of hub-cap theft yesterday.
Hanging is too good I say.
And incidentally, although I am a scouser this heinous crime was comitted outside Liverpool.

The thug Graham Sankey who originally confessed was sentenced to 5 months in prison last year for racially abusing a doorman,
And that makes him guilty of the assault in Bulgaria?
I seeeeeeeeeee!
On the other hand Michael Sheilds is clean, no convictions,
Except for this one!
has the support of LFC, most notable Stevie Gerrard who wouldn't risk tarnishing his squeaky clean reputation unless he was 100% sure of his innocence either.
Squeaky clean?
So, this must have been another hub-cap stealer called Steven Gerrard:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.sports.soccer.manchester.united/browse_thread/thread/e5aa78fa325eb718
"LIVERPOOL captain Steven Gerrard is in custody today after police were called to a Merseyside nightspot. The 28 year-old was arrested in the early hours of this morning following a disturbance at licensed premises on Lord Street, Southport. A 34 year-old man, from Southport, suffered facial injuries which are said to be serious, and was taken to hospital. "
My ar-se! | |

| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 7/3/2009 12:06:35 AM | From the information I have read over the years, my gut instinct is that Sheilds is innocent of this crime... But that is all I have to go on, hearsay and instinct... His pardon has been refused, those that begin the appeal process have their reasons, they may be ultimatley proved right or wrong but unfortunately theirs is the decision/ opinion that matters... | |
|
| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 7/3/2009 12:15:22 AM | Jack Straw is acting on the advice of the Lawlords, his appeal was also refused in the European court of human rights.
Is he guilty ? Who knows, guilty/innocence is often just the luck of the whos on the jury.

| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 7/3/2009 12:43:15 AM | I wonder if Jack Straw and co's reluctance to free him is more to do with not upsetting the Bulgarians?
On the news this morning, its been reported that someone has challenged Graham Sankey to take a lie detector test to prove his innocence.... £30,000 will be given to him if he passes it. Michael Shields has already took a lie detector test in Garth Prison which indicated 100%innocence.
|
| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 7/3/2009 4:53:41 AM | There is only one reason for this pathetic decision.
If Shields was (rightly) released it would cause a diplomatic issue with the Bulgarians. A similar thing happened with Japan when we reduced the sentence of someone sentenced there.
But rather than give the real reasons, Straw tells lies...typical!

It's quite possible.
Giving him a pardon would imply that Straw did not think much of the Bulgarian justice system. Also, the Bulgarians wanted Shields to be punished for his crime, yet allowed him to serve his sentence in Britain - how would it look if he were immediately freed? Would Bulgaria allow other Brits to serve their sentences in Britain after that?
Hardly.
On the news this morning, its been reported that someone has challenged Graham Sankey to take a lie detector test to prove his innocence.... £30,000 will be given to him if he passes it.
The result wouldn't make any difference to Shields, as the tests aren't admissible evidence, especially if performed on someone else.
Michael Shields has already took a lie detector test in Garth Prison which indicated 100%innocence.
The only thing 'proven' was that Shields can pass a lie detector test.
It appears the decision is only provisional......Sheilds lawyers have to come up with new evidence.
Isn't this true for all prisoners?

| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 9/9/2009 4:34:53 AM | I’m confused…nothing new there then. Is it not the case that Michael has been pardoned this morning? Like an earlier comment I don’t know all the ins and outs of this case. I have seen a documentary about it and concluded from that I believe the lad to be innocent. So I’m assuming he is free now and has been pardoned…or is he? | |

| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 9/9/2009 4:37:40 AM | | yes he' s had a pardon from Jack Straw and is home with his family (I pasted the link for today's news). | |

| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 9/9/2009 5:35:49 AM | That's the confusing thing about having to use old threads that deal with a certain subject - not everyone will notice that the original thread was started some time back and it makes for confusing reading.
But if you had started a new thread about him being given the pardon, people would have jumped on your back for not using this one.
Anywho, great news for the lad, from what I have heard I thought he could be innocent, but I don't know enough about it.

| Pardon appeal for Shields refused Posted: 9/9/2009 7:21:41 AM | Great news...long enough coming though!
Interesting to note how Straw's words today are the polar opposite of the rubbish he spoke when the pardon was first refused!
|
| Pardon granted for Shields!!!! Posted: 9/9/2009 10:36:01 AM | | The sun is shining bright in Liverpool today!!!! I happened to speak to friends of the Shields family today in Wavertree and by all accounts all are estatic. I was told Michael was so shocked that he was taken first to a hotel at the Albert Dock to compose himself and prepare a statement for the press before he finally goes home for good. He also met players from LFC and also spoke to Raffa I'm told. Its seems the whole city are celebrating today its brilliant news...The family are now set on clearing his name in Bulgaria too. | |

Well, he served four years for basically assaulting someone in a bar, which seems about par for the course these days unless you play football for England.
It only seems right that Liverpool should welcome back a convicted criminal...
