| JULY 18 -19 RIVER TUBING & OVERNIGHT CAMPING LAKE COWICHAN VI Posted: 7/3/2009 10:55:08 PM | Welcome to the event Warose...
Yeah ... We are recommending Personal Floatation Devices (PFD) ... especially for weaker swimmers ... and it's a lengthly tubing trek and a PFD is always a welcome addition in the event of a tub malfunction ... It has been mentioned about sunscreen, but I should also mention about sunglasses , footwear and make sure you do not have your vehicle remotes , because the chances of getting wet, are pretty good..

| JULY 18 -19 RIVER TUBING & OVERNIGHT CAMPING LAKE COWICHAN VI Posted: 7/4/2009 12:17:01 PM | TUBE INFO A LE SENOR:
There are basically two types of tubes available The vinyl tube is made out of a heavy gauge vinyl fabric specifically made for river use (ensure the one you purchase states this). It is a heavier fabric than a vinyl "swimming pool" tube and therefore stands up to more use. It is more comfortable and durable than the basic tube and has handles.
The basic rubber tube is one that was made to go inside a car tire. It has a 15-inch hole in the middle and was the standard tube before the vinyl ones came along. "Tube rash" may occur from rubbing your skin on the tube, and they are not as durable.
TUBE PURCHASE - You can purchase a tube at various outlets such as cdn tire for about 40.00 or maybe 30.00.
TUBE RENTAL: http://www.cowichanriver.com/?page_id=18 (beside the meet up place - highly recommended for convenience to avoid transporting large tubes whilst carpooling, and cost is cheap enough)
Cost is $10.00 for rental. $15.00 includes shuttle back to vehicle (avoids a 15 - 20 minute walk) Shuttle available only in Lake Cowichan (not the Skutz Falls portion)

| JULY 18 -19 RIVER TUBING & OVERNIGHT CAMPING LAKE COWICHAN VI Posted: 7/4/2009 12:59:43 PM | SIGN UP OR NOT SIGN UP - THAT IS THE QUESTION
We do not wish to be rude...but signing up would be SOO much easier for us. Benefits of signing up:
1. You get a cell phone contact number in case you get lost and can't find us or in case the gate is locked (which it will be except for certain times)
2. You get updates about any changes before you leave
3. You don't have to pack up all your stuff and drive out there only to find out that we have no room for you! (That's a good one, isn't it?)
WE UNDERSTAND there are some rare situations when you don't feel comfortable signing up - private message one of the hosts and we will try (operative word is TRY) to keep you posted and in the loop and at least we will be able to count you in the numbers of those we expect.
Also please let us know if you are bringing guests and how many.
We thank you humbly and kindly!

| JULY 18 -19 RIVER TUBING & OVERNIGHT CAMPING LAKE COWICHAN VI Posted: 7/4/2009 1:01:46 PM | Some Tubing Safety .... Which will always ensure fun is had by all ....
Travel in a group when you go tubing. There's safety in numbers. If you get hurt or lost, you don't want to be left completely. (We ask that everyone stick together ... and we will on occasion stop down river to ensure we have not lost anyone.. cuz that... would sux)
Tie your inner tubes together while traveling down river. Bungee cords can also be used to bind inner tubes into a traveling caravan (not to mention, these events are made to be social gatherings, so Debra and I are encouraging everyone to have a bungee cord {and please not the ones with hooks) to allow you to tie on to others)
Wear a Personal Floatation Device (PFD) while you're in the water (highly recommended for weak swimmers) Even though the river water might be shallow, it can still be dangerous. Currents beneath the surface can move quickly, making it difficult to recover and return to the surface for air when you fall in the water .
Follow any posted rules pertaining to pollution and contamination. Many of our nation's most scenic rivers have been contaminated by industrial waste, making the water unsafe to drink. Even small amounts of contaminated water can create health problems. (Pack your own drinking water, easily carried in those net washer bags, which also allows you somewhere to hold your empty containers).
Follow all of the safety practices outlined by your guide (or on this particular case the tub rental will provide some safety tips also).
Pack plenty of sunscreen for the day. Pick a waterproof brand with a high SPF rating. You'll probably be on the water for several hours, so you'll need to reapply sunscreen throughout the day. We are also recommending hats, sunglasses, appropriate footwear, and a water tight bag … for keys, lighter and those who smoke). Also check your attire for any sharp buckets, rivets in jeans or sneaker as this will lead to your tubs demise...
It's always a good idea for at least one person in a tubing group to know how to perform CPR. (There are a few of us who are fully qualified with CPR and First Aid.
Drink alcohol in moderation if at all (Everyone attending this event must be over the age of 19, and must know that the hosts will not be babysitting those drinking in excess). You must maintain your senses to navigate a waterway. Don't drink at all if your tubing over whitewater. (Altho it should not have to be said… NO GLASS CONTAINERS on the river…. Please and thanx
Questions ??? Concerns ??? Post or drop myself or Debra an email…
