| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 7/3/2009 4:09:14 PM | | So I heard some brand new Alice In Chains just a few days back for the first time since 1999 and I have to say, it's making me look forward to the new album coming out this fall. Even though its with a new singer, it still sounds like Alice In Chains. I personally think it rocks, but I'm curious as to what you guys think of it. I know that it'll definitely make bands like Godsmack, Creed, and Puddle Of Mudd sound a bit more softer. | |

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 7/5/2009 9:38:10 PM | I'm sorry, but I just can't listen to bands with singers I consider irreplaceable. For example, I have no interest in listening to Van Halen these days. Why? Because even though David Lee Roth is a cookoo bird, he was Van Halen to me. Freddie Mercury was Queen to me. So, Layne Staley will always be Alice In Chains to me. There are simply no substitutes that will do. I don't care how much the new lead singer might "mimic" the original, they aren't the same damn thing.
I realize the remaining band members want new singers to move on, but once the original singer leaves (or dies) I just can't stomach a replacement. They always suck, to my ears.
I'm not a music snob by any means, but I just can't get over this little "new lead singer" block I have. I just don't like them and I don't want to listen to them....especially if it was a band I passionately loved, like Alice In Chains.

Both good points on both sides of the argument. I'm starting to wonder if bands replacing key players after they pass on is going to be the new trendy thing because it's getting to the point where I feel it kinda kills the legacy of the band, like if Mick Jagger or Steven Tyler were to pass away and then the Stones or Aerosmith get a new lead singer even I would have to say that it's not the same thing. Best example is what Queen has been doing, first with George Michael and now with this kid from American Idol, I'm sorry but it's not the same as having Freddy Mercury on the mic.
But that doesn't mean that replacement singer x is doomed to fail from the getgo. AC/DC is the best example, but even Brian has said that he never replaced Bon Scott as Bon is irreplaceable, but that just earned him more points in my book. And Haggar era Van Halen, yeah I'm going on record and saying it worked, it wasn't until they brough Gary Cherrone in that suddenly it just seemed like an ugly mess.

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 7/7/2009 2:35:05 PM | I'll give the new Alice In Chains a chance, but I really don't see how it's going to be any different from either of those Jerry Cantrell solo albums, the first of which had the rest of the band on it except for Layne.
And I agree about the trend of bands with irreplaceable singers continuing on without them. Not good. Alice In Chains, Blind Melon...... I'm halfway expecting a Nirvana "reunion" in a few years.
And for those that haven't been paying attention, Roth has been back in Van Halen for about a year now.

Posted: 7/7/2009 4:08:30 PM | Personal ,I think it is great they are back ............awesome I have been in many bands as a guitar player and I can say when you are in a band the singer is just another member of the band.......The WHOLE BAND works for YEARS on a project.......... not just the singer throwing the whole band because the singer leaves is just B>S........
I miss Layne too ........but you got to remember he pisssed his life away with drugs,if you are going to be mad at any one ,be mad at him for screwing up a good thing
Thank god Jerry and the boys decided to carry on, and if you listen to the tracks it IS Alice in Chains Thank God they are back, because radio rock has been really sucking lately

I don't want to argue this point but one thing needs to be said - the vast majority of Alice In Chains hits were about Layne pissing his life away. Of course that doesn't change the fact that the end result was tragic.
Still:
Thank God they are back, because radio rock has been really sucking lately

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 7/8/2009 8:15:08 AM | | Yea i guess this is true, and Jerry did write all the songs if i recall correctly , But still i wouldn't complain like if a lead singer left the band and they got a new one . When a lead singer of a band die's and is replaced i just think that's a different situation. | |

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 7/8/2009 8:48:07 PM | Alice in Chains is Jerry... he wrote like 95% of the songs, and let's face he sang almost half of it too hehehe
I love Laney... but I actually like it better when Jerry sings...
anyways the new album sounds way heavier that Alice in Chains used to be... and well.. I really like it... =)

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 7/9/2009 3:03:19 AM | Any singer or band member is replaceable if their replacement is good but that's not always the case. AC/DC did just fine when Bon Scott died because Brian Johnson was good. Van Halen sucked with Gary Cherrone because he simply wasn't as good as David Lee Roth. When Drowning Pool replaced their lead singer who died they got even better.
I'll give this new AIC a listen and see what I think about it.

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 7/17/2009 10:39:13 PM | What little I've heard with new singer William Duvall has done nothing for me personally.I thought Jerry Cantrell should just take over on lead vox because many of AIC's early songs featured both he and Layne harmonizing together anyway.Besides,go listen to Cantrell's 2 solo lps(Boggy Depot/Degradation Trip)where he does handle lead vox and what do they sound like?Yep,you guessed it...Alice In Chains. | |

I'm willing to take them as they are - new member too. I really love them even tho I haven't listened to them much as of late.
Let's front them some credit to make good choices with replacements...

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 10/27/2009 6:02:06 PM | They say trends repeat themselves every twenty years or so. Lately every single pop culture entity has been made into a movie (G.I. Joe, Transformers, etc). So it's just about that time to get back into the nineties. So get ready for Kurt Cobain to be culturally relevant again, they'll remake Melrose Place (which they did), I heard Mike Judge wants to go back to doing Beavis and Butt-head, and I'm sure some other nineties fad I don't remember will make a huge comeback then die another sudden death. Maybe Pogs? Will beanie babies make a brief resurrection?
Honestly, I really don't see why they would make another album except for the allure of rockstardom and money.

| New Alice In Chains album: What are your thoughts? Posted: 10/30/2009 11:53:51 PM | i LOVE LOVE LOVE Layne Staley and i was so very against them going on without him. However, i have heard a few of the new songs and i was very impressed. Layne will always be loved and missed though.
i do have to say, though, that if Blind Melon were to try without Shannon.... FORGET IT!!!!
