A lot of people simply aren't expressive enough or don't have the vocabulary to be expressive so they fill out their effing sentences with effing swear words.

Not pleasant most of the time and singular expletives can often offend or at least put you off somebody.

But why, when we string 3, 4 or 5 expletives together as a sentence, does it sound funny? :)

I personally think it shows a lack of intelligence to use swear words in every sentence. It can be very off putting when you are on a date, and also I find it very uncomfortable because I don't know why it is, but people who swear excessively tend to 'shout' too..

Sometimes an odd swear word can appear funny, when telling a joke for example.. or if you have stubbed your toe!.. *my language is blue when I have done that*

Ohhhh you expletive deletive! lol - not you OP just example of my language

I find to curse someone with the fleas of a thousand camels wearing smelly brown y-fronts much more appealing and funny.

If we are stuck on habit of using swear words, we can simply replace them with things like barstool, duck's sake, duck off, who the duck did that? He's a right munter, kiss my puckered starfish, etc then see how funny we can get.

oh dear. My language is very colourful at the best of times. I am certainly not stupid (10 gcses and 2 a levels) and although i have a wide variety of expletives in my vocabulary i am certainly not overly loud.
I am told I take after my Late Great-Grandmother who hailed from Bromley-by-Bow. I was raised in a pretty much non swearing household.
I just happen to like swear words.
So fvck the lot of ya

i love swearing, me. Its a great outlet for my many frustrations. Irish women love a good feck and i learned at my mammys knee how to curse. My granny was still fecking til she died. Dont care if it offends. Just words. I am one of those sorts who encourages toddlers to swear. That is fricking hilarious.

Swearing for swearing sake seems rather crass to me but I think expletives can be expressive and lets out all sorts of frustration, there are many times that no word will do other than fook. I am not a fan of the word coont but as it is still a taboo and a bit risque I will also sometimes use that when really in the mood.
I think the only time that I find swearing on its own funny is when someone you don't expect to swears and it is a bit of a shock.

My parent's swear like a trooper, they are also Irish Sjjx, but not until I was about 13 or 14 when they clearly felt I was old enough to hear it, it was like the turning of a tap though from never swearing they can't stop it! still laugh when my mum swears.

The sporadic use of expletives, I believe, can add to a joke or help to highlight a paticular point.

I feel it loses its value however when it is repeated too often.

It can, as has been suggested, denote a poor vocabulary but then so can the overuse of emoticons and text speak (in my opinion).

I do tire of people with a low swearing vocabulary, when all they have in their repertoire is fcuk. If you must use fcuk try some alliteration ... you furtive fat ferret felching fcuking freak!

Sometimes I come on these Forums and its like the 60's never happened, and now its like Billy Connolly never lived!

For F U C K S sake.

It's all about using it at the right time, I mean look above me and not think F U C K!

Now please add some more sanctimonious generalisations.....................

I can swear with the best of them (in a posh southern accent ) (that is an 'in' joke as my estuary speaking friend believes I sound posh), BUT (hey the big but is back) why do we all swear like dockers when we hurt ourselves? The stubbed toe, hammered thumb, bashed funny bone ....................... I once ripped off half a toe-nail by opening a door over it and swore like a fish-wife. I was saying words I didn't know existed When someone shut my fingers in a car door (by accident) I had to be very restrained as there were children in the car, that took some self control not to swear I can tell you, but the inside of my head was blue

The versatile word FOOK!

Use it to...

show that you're suspicious of someone... who the fook are you?

show that you're lost...where the fook am I?

point someone in the right direction...fook off!

show that you're in trouble... I'm fooked now!

show when you're panicing... lets get the fook out of here!

show that you're resigned to a situation...Oh fook it!!

show aggression...fook YOU!

show surprise...oooh fook me!

show confusion...what the fook?

show despair...fooked again!

show denial...I didn't fooking do it!!

show apathy...well who gives a fook?

Oh yes, what a versatile word fook is, be sure to start using it more often around your parents, your children and with your boss!

Depends who's company I'm in. Obviously a no-no at work even though the kids swear, but there's been a couple of times when I used it. First when my toes got run over by a Trampoline, and second walking into the corner of a bench.
"Mother Fvcker!!" hopping about, rolling on floor was received by the kids with a "tsk, tsk. You swore." and shaking of the heads.

The use of swear words is completely irrelevant to a person's level of intelligence. Personally I think statements implying the use of expletives to be a sign of low intelligence implies more about the intelligence of the people making the statement, than it does about the people who are doing the swearing.

In the words of Stephen Fry; "The sort of twee person who thinks swearing is in any way a sign of a lack of education, or of a lack of verbal interest, is just fucking lunatic".

God bless Santoki and the Catspj's said it more perfectly than I ever could. I curse like a trooper, more I try to stop it the more they seem to slip out. Would like to curb it though if I am honest. It seems as natural to me now as breathing.

At this stage you take me or leave me.................life goes on and other peoples opinion of me are none of my business.

I swear sometimes and sometimes I don't.

Swearing can be funny I agree with the OP - especially when you are frustrated or whatever and you let out a string of nothing but swear words.

I also agree that use of swear words has nothing whatsoever to do with intelligence or education or lack of.
