| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 10:30:25 AM | The boss of Ryanair is at it again with his crazy ideas to save money and boost profits.
RYANAIR boss Michael O’Leary wants passengers to STAND on the budget airline’s flights — in a bid to pack in more people and boost profits. Passengers would pay less to huddle next to what have been described as “bar stools”, with seatbelts around their waists.
O’Leary has already held talks with US plane manufacturer Boeing about designing a jet with standing room.
He is now hoping to get the go-ahead from the Irish Aviation Authority before ordering a new fleet. A Ryanair spokesman said: “If they approve it, we’ll be doing it.”
O’Leary got the idea from Chinese airline Spring, which put forward similar plans — estimating they could pack in up to 50 per cent more passengers and slash costs by 20 per cent.
Would you be happy to stand up if it meant paying less for your flight?
Or are you only prepared to fly if you have a seat even if there not comfortable?
Do you think this is a good or bad idea?
What ever will they think of next?!

Bejaysus whats next, being on the the outside of the plane and flapping your arms up and down?

Would you be happy to stand up if it meant paying less for your flight? If it was a short flight, yeah. Have to do it on the train regularly! Not sure I'd want to stand for 7-8 hours though.
Do you think this is a good or bad idea? Any idea that gives us a choice is a good idea IMO.
What ever will they think of next?! Charging 2 quid to go to the toilet?

Would you be happy to stand up if it meant paying less for your flight? No I bloody well wouldn't. Travelling is such a tedious thing in itself, what with really weird check in times and such lark, you have to stand in a big long queue whilst the staff go at snails pace checking everyone in, then you have to sit for hours on end waiting for your flight to be called so you can go through security checks or whatever and by the end of it, you look forward to being able to sit in a seat which isn't overly comfortable as it is but it does considering the hours of discomfort you've already had to endure. If I'm paying for a ticket on a flight, I want a nice comfy seat.
Or are you only prepared to fly if you have a seat even if there not comfortable I think I answered this question above lol
Do you think this is a good or bad idea? As are all of Ryan Air's suggestions, it's another poop suggestion which is NOT going to win their Airline any favours. I mean, what happens if the plane needs to make an emergency landing? The people who are standing aren't well protected in case of such an event. So no, it's not a good idea.
What ever will they think of next? Passengers flying below with the luggage probably, or even sticking the luggage up top and passengers underneath.

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 10:41:56 AM | | I clearly think it is a bad idea (turbulance, take off & landing) but I honestly can't ever see it being approved and allowed to happen. O'Leary just wants any publicity, y'know no such as thing as bad publicity and all that. | |

Very reasonably priced and more leg room than a charter flight!

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 10:53:01 AM | As I never answered my own question....
well I wouldn't mind lying down during a flight if the plane had comfortable beds and fluffy pillows and you were able to bunk up next to a pretty lady who had nice baps.
Maybe they could have planes with nightclubs on board so that passengers could have a boogie with each on the dance floor although smoking outside would be a problem.
No I would not be happy standing up during a flight and I'm not paying £2 for a No 2 either.

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 10:53:23 AM | Erm how would you put your seat belt on? Would it be suspended from the ceiling of the plane? Would you have to hang on to the person hanging next to you if there was turbulence? I someone don't think that this has been thought through carefully... | |

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 10:57:34 AM | Considering they have cut all the luggage amounts down to a bare minimum, squeezing 50% extra people on board would mean you wouldn't be allowed any luggage at all and would therefore have to go on board wearing a weeks worth of clothes. However, this would free up the luggage bit underneath enabling them to jam a few more people on board.
£2 for the toilet? You'd be lucky to find it with all those people on board. I'd suggest complete starvation for 24 hours before flying

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 10:59:14 AM | It's just more publicity for the irish twat, the civilian aviation authority would'nt permit this in a million years, everyone has to be seated properly not perched on a poxy stool, unbelievably dangerous. | |

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 11:02:09 AM | | im terrified of flying..so i wouldnt mind standing next to the emergency exit with a parachute on ready to do a jump if it starting going down..still..its a bit of a crazy idea though..the things these people do to save money.. | |

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 11:07:36 AM | I really need to go to specsavers, I read that as 'Would you be happy to stand up during a fight?' I was going to say I'd rather stand up during a fight than lay down and get my head kicked in (it's all that talk of bullying on another thread lol)
ok OT why not just hang people from hooks in a harness, they could be on rails like the dry cleaners. When you check in you get hooked up, and then progress on a rail to your 'slot' on the plane, saves all that leg work of walking to the departure gate, buying drinks you can't take on the plane etc etc................ simples
My aim is to travel everywhere first class so it's N/A

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 11:09:15 AM | Fantastic publicity stunt by the airline hey! As for hanging on to loops and perching on wonky stools lol.. I think this is unlikely ever to happen as some health and safety law will come into play somewhere. Maybe the risk of spilling drinks or the airline being sued for accidents caused while standing up and sleeping etc..
Is the boss of the airline going into the personal injury claims service?

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 11:13:08 AM | Following on from my message (2)...
Should Michael O'Leary suggest he was to cut down the length of wings by 50% in order to save fuel, would you still believe it?
Just what would he need to do and/or say for you to accept that it nothing more than a publicity stunt?
Is modern media so effective that it can so easily manipulate and control the masses?

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 11:13:49 AM | | Actually not a bad idea for small trips for example from brum to dublin/belfast/glasgow/edinburgh. Those trips are under an hour and like a poster said the seats arnt that comfy if your over 6ft and got long legs. Wouldnt be that different to the tube or peak train times. | |

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 11:17:15 AM | I can't imagine either that it would ever be allowed..surely you are only allowed a certain amount of people on a plane for health and safety reasons? How would there be enough life jackets for everyone anyway, aren't they normally under your seat? If that many people squeezed onto a plane you would be afraid that weight limits wouldn't allow it to take off! yeh chargin £2 to use the loo too?If that happened Just force open a window in mid flight and use that instead!Arrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! | |

| Would you be happy to stand up during a flight? Posted: 7/6/2009 11:18:05 AM | I was flying to Tel Aviv a couple of years ago for Easter and as soon as the flight was in the air a substantial number of what I assume were orthadox jews got up and stood for the whole flight praying in the aisle, they kind of made their way to the centre of the plain where the mid section exit doors were and there was a little more space. I wondered what was going on for a moment but soon felt the champagne going to my head and began to loose consciousness. I was surprised that they were still there when I came round, but assume that they'd sat down in the 4 hours between - never did know if they stood for the whole flight or not.
But if they did, good for them. I couldn't do it - I need to cling onto the arms of my seat while I'm crying as we take off. I've often wondered what clinging to the arms would do in the event of a take off disaster, and concluded that it wouldn't save me, but it makes me feel better.
Short flight perhaps but what if there were delays? And those like lean on bus stop type seats make your arse numb.
No - business class at least for me but if folk want to do it, let them, if it opens up travel possibilities for those who otherwise may not be able to afford it or who don't want to line CE's pockets any more than they have to, then go for it.

Standing up on a plane all squashed together? Could be fun in Turbulence

Posted: 7/6/2009 12:01:19 PM | | it would be intresting to see what would happen to the people standing or sat on a stool during a crash landing of a couple of hundred miles an hour.the caa in this country would never ever allow ryanair to fly out of uk airports.
