Why would you (apart from the small print in POFs T&Cs or does that just apply to the forums??) want to describe yourself in English? | |

Posted: 7/8/2009 4:15:49 AM | Because to guarantee the verbiage in your text for your profile, emails and forum posts meets the terms of decency etc... that you agree to around here, it needs to be in ONE language. All the spam filters here that scan your profile and emails and the limited manpower that the concept of this site is basically built around would have to be massively changed to work in multiple languages.
It's a FREE site and needs to work in the native language of the programmer and peersonnel that created it and support it.
It is not their responsibility to make the screens, automated emails and the tools they rely on to police this sites content, work on multiple languages. It is a privately owned site written in English and you agree to write in English to play here.
Thank gawd this isnt some government run project or it probably would be required. And employee hundreds of people and cost hundreds of dollars a month to play here.
Instead we have a site needing few employee's, that is still free for general use as long as you can speak or at least write in English. I dont think thats asking to much on a FREE dating site.

I can understand an accept the need for the forum areas especially to be in English (& this is in the rules) however it seems nonsensical for a native French speaker (for example) looking for a French Date to be made to write in English.
As far as I can tell there's nothing in place to prevent you writing your main Dating profile in any language you like (please feel free to point me to where it says otherwise) and indeed I have seen the odd profile with paragraphs wrritten in a language other than English
I think the OPs original point is quite good, search for People in any part of the EU for example and they're all in English( & usually very good English) which does seem a tadge odd.
What the OP *wasn't* asking was for the Site to be provided in multiple languages from an interface point of view. | |

Posted: 7/8/2009 5:41:46 AM | This site uses automatic scanning mechanisms to police content of both emails and profiles for the protection of the members. It is one of the primary features I think sets POF apart from many other dating sites.
Filters here scan automatically. To try and do that in multiple languages would be beyond reasonable expectations for a free dating site. Remember this site is free and has basicaly no employee's. No way to police the content in multiple languages. Content must be in a language native to the staff here. If they allowed lets say chinese or Japanese profiles. And they are reported. Who decides whats acceptable?
This is a Canadian website and if anything I could understand French being accepted IF THE STAFF here was fluent in french and wanted to allow that.
However this website is based on the English Language. You are expected to converse in that language here I believe to guarantee that the conversations and communication exchanged with members meet POF acceptable minimum standards.

No they are not.

In the Acceptable Use and Posting Rules, there is only one referece with respect to entering information in English, and that only pertains to Forum Postings.
If there is any other reference in stipulating that all profiles be written in English, it would be in some obscure location that would be hopeless in finding upon signup - unless there is some new clause in the opening signup screens - consequently and IMO, if you are a foreign profile and seeking the same, I don't see then need to craft your profile in English - I highly doubt that the "Business Model" would delete potential revenue generating profiles based on some nonsensical notion.
The site to my knowledge, has no resources to monitor for profile violations in a different language.

The forums however are Understandably in english Only. It is a Free site, there are only 1 or maybe 2 moderators that we know of .. and it is hard enough for them to keep up with the nasties as it is ..
That said - if You or someone you knw wants to post in forums and has problems with english - they can google a babble fish to translate from almost any language into english .. just like that!
This internet thing makes most things too easy eh. | |
