Just a simple question for the Elk hunters out in Colorado.

What tye of rifle do you prefer using for Elk hunting in your state?

I'm thinking about getting a Weatherby 338 378, but I'm unsure if this rifle would be overkill for Elk.

What do you guys use?

I'm not in Colarado....but I'm sure our Alberta elk are no different than yours. I use my 25-06 with 120 grain hornady hollowpoints. It went in and out broadside on a bull in 2007. Very impressed......so my answer would be yes the 338-378 is more than enough cannon for an elk. Most guys here use 300 Win. Mag with 165 grain barnes triple shock X bullets and it drops them just as dead as any Weatherby cannon will.

most people seem to prefer the good ole 30.06(think the dot is th ought)
i use a 7x57 mauser or my 303 british.this year i will most likely use my new 270 though.really it mostly comes down to what you feel comfortable with.i've heard alot of times my mauser is too small(mostly because of the short barrel)but it's dropped a few elk.where and how you hunt make a difference too.if you're gonna be taking shots at like 500 yards you're deffinately gonna need the perfect rifle for you.if your usualy in a situation where you're shooting through brush you need less power with a steadier trajectory.
