How many people are aware of how much the government is borrowing ??
Posted: 7/10/2009 8:37:55 AM
I am just curious if people realise just how much money this government has borrowed to keep the banks afloat ?
I already know the answer but the people i speak to in every day life seem to have no idea.
They are more concerned with what is going on in Big Brother which seems bizarre to me.
Throw some figures at me people, lets see just how informed the POF population is.
This isn't about showing how uninformed people are, this is more to find out how well our government and media is hiding this information from people.
Please don't just look, actually offer a figure for discussion.

Around £150 bln so far as I'm aware.

Doesn't affect me though, I'm coming to the end of my career so it isn't me who has to pay it back.

Ok, nobody seems willing to offer a figure.

The actual figure the Government has borrowed so far is a staggering 700 billion pounds.

The thing i really want to know is where is all this money being borrowed from ??

Anybody wish to discuss ???

What difference does it make to me at the moment?
I can't change it or stop them.
Tell me nearer the election.
I've got better things to worry about, such as the Birmingham picnic meet and where abouts we should sit in sutton park.
Real issues that affect me now that I can change now, not what's out of my hands.

Do you sleep well at night? I do.

Alas I do not know the exact figure, I would say billions. When that is put together with all the money still being paid for PFIs (by we lovely taxpayers), Britain really ought to be in debtors prison.

If they hadn't done it, the banks would have collapsed. The hole in the wall would no longer give money when you want it to; your direct debits would not have been paid, your cheques not cleared, your debit/credit cards rejected etc. etc.

The government is borrowing far more than 150bn. It's more like 600-700bn in total over the next few years. It's horrendous. But then they've been borrowing since 2001 and were even borrowing at the peak of the boom. Insane.

Well, generally the government goes to the bank for money, the bank sells securities to the public to raise money. and the government will then spend the money.

The last time a Labour Government was in power they had us working a 3 day week, The bins were piled up in the streets, Rats were rife, They borrowed heavily and eventually lost the election.
The Conservatives took over and had to reign in the economy and pay off the debts, They did this by manipulating inflation, if anyone remembers the 80's, morgage rates went up to around 15%. They also sold off most of the public assets through privatisation, gas, electric, water, buses, telecoms.
In light of what is happening now, how on earth are they going to pay back the record borrowings of late ?
We have no family silver left !!!!!
I find it incredulous that the banks foolishly lend to people who obviously do not have the means to pay back the money, then they suddenly refuse to lend to each other causing a massive panic and run on the banks which in turn leads to the banks failing and the government bailing them out with money they have had to borrow from, guess who... banks ! The only people who are winning in this scenario are the banks.
This just sounds like one big con to me, it is another 1930's stock market crash, Which by the way was engineered by the major banking families to keep the general population in purpetual slavery.
We should have all drawn our money out of the banks and let them all crash !!!!
They couldn't have repossessed every privately owned house in the country, that would just not have been feasible or enforcable !!!

All depends how you measure "debt". Truth is even Messrs Brown and Darling don't reallyknow. When you add up "in the books" debt, bank liabilities, PFI liabilities etc etc, my estimate is 1.5 trillion pounds.

This affects everyone, even people who can retire early as their income will depend partly on investment income. Even "safe" gilts are no longer as safe as they once were.

Sparking the need for proper change perhaps?

I though the OP asked current borrowing, not future borrowing?

I agree, maybe the banking system collapse would spark proper change instead of sticking a band aid on while the patient is on life support.

We have to keep borrowing to keep the infrastructure in place, you can't just cut spending overnight and with budgets set at least a ayear in advance you wont see public spending too drop at all for at least another year. Anarchy would cost a lot more in the long term. Confidence is returning to the housing market and that stupidly imo is what our economy appears to be based upon so there are the green shoots of recovery at least.

Anarchy suggests looting and general chaos, i don't think that would be the case with the banks collapsing would it ?
The only people going into apoplexy would be the banks and their shareholders and the corperations who control virtually everything, everyone else would be laughing at them.
It is about time the central banking system was brought down and something brought in to replace it.
A good start would be to make all transactions transparent, that would make it impossible for fraud and manipulations of the money markets by the rich and powerful. If everyone can see where money is being spent or hidden, how much co-workers are getting paid, how much bosses are getting paid etc then this world would suddenly become a lot fairer to people and we would know precisely where to concentrate our anger when things go drastically wrong like they have at present.
That is my opinion anyway.

Instead of complaining about it, why didnt you buy Barclays shares at 63p. Mecom shares at 0.67p. Davenham at 10p. Solomon Gold at 2p. I could go on. If you'd done that...........you'd be loving this recession, not complaining about it

Wouldn't bother me, doesn't bother me, I'll go live in the woods off the land, would suite me fine. You all stay and loot and pillage and kill in the name of a civilised society whilst I live with the animals in safety and luxury. Civilised society is very uncivilised.

Why cant we just go back to bartering, get rid on the dole and the banks,

Always seemed vaguely dishonest to me for Goverments to take out huge loans , knowing full well that they're not going to be the ones in power when it's time to pay it off. Even worse when it's likely that an opposition party will have to foot the bill.

Well, SOMEBODY has to clean up the mess caused by Labour governments.

Our country has always been in debt. It's nothing new. It's a soft touch. Other countries owe up billions and pay something stupid like £5 a week or if they're really lucky the debt gets cancelled!

Almost 700bn, 100bn for the nationalisation of Northern Rock and the recapitalisation of Royal Bank of Scotland. And apparently it is escalating with the liabilities from RBS being closer to 1.7tn.

As for who we owe the money too I am not 100% sure but i watched a programme with regards to america's debt which is in the region of 7 tn and if we have the same borrower, it could saudi arabia and asia.

Ok I did some research it is the US who borrows from Asia and Saudi Arabia. The UK government is raising money it doesn’t have, by printing bits of paper (securities) and selling them to banks, which buy them with money they don’t have either, but which they create out of nothing. The government then expects us, through our taxes, to pay back the banks with the real money that we’ve worked for. So basically we are paying for a debt the government created - good ol labour!

Just out of curiosity when is the next general election?........

Then the next question seeing as how the majority of MPs are thieving **stards is there any point voting?

As to how much this government has borrowed, not entirely sure on that one.... What I do know is as a country we owe more now than what we did at the end of the second world war.......

What I do know is we as a country will still be paying it off when I'm long dead and bury......

The basic problem is that the government raises just three pounds in taxes for every four pounds it spends. Annual expenditure is 600+ billion, hence the need to borrow / print 150 billion. Yet the government is still handing out our money to all and sundry.
£9,200,000 in aid this year, including £164 million to Zimbabwe. Some of this money should be spent on equipment for our troops.

I was interested until around here ^, at which point I decided you were a loon, possibly a follower of the insane David Icke, in fear of humanoid lizards, the Illuminati and the Elders of Zion

Maybe you should do some investigating instead of casting aspersions mate.

The scary part is the Government don't know how much they are really borrowing or how they'll ever pay it back.

And the US is largely in hock to China now. Have you seen China's calls for the dollar to no longer be the main trading currency?

Go East young man... go East.
