| Russia to propse "New World Currency" at G-20 Posted: 7/10/2009 11:57:33 AM | http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aeFVNYQpByU4
July 10 (Bloomberg) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev illustrated his call for a supranational currency to replace the dollar by pulling from his pocket a sample coin of a “united future world currency.”
“Here it is,” Medvedev told reporters today in L’Aquila, Italy, after a summit of the Group of Eight nations. “You can see it and touch it.”
The coin, which bears the words “unity in diversity,” was minted in Belgium and presented to the heads of G-8 delegations, Medvedev said.
The question of a supranational currency “concerns everyone now, even the mints,” Medvedev said. The test coin “means they’re getting ready. I think it’s a good sign that we understand how interdependent we are.”
Medvedev has repeatedly called for creating a mix of regional reserve currencies as part of the drive to address the global financial crisis, while questioning the U.S. dollar’s future as a global reserve currency. Russia’s proposals for the G-20 meeting in London in April included the creation of a supranational currency.
How would you feel about a unified world currency?

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 7/10/2009 12:01:16 PM | | I don't like the idea. Not for any nationalistic reasons.......it makes perfect practical sense. But One thing I haven't had time to do for a while but love is travelling. When you travel, what's attractive about it is the 'differentness' of everything and that includes the money. It's bad enough I can go to almost any country and order a primo americano and get the same item in the same cup, even worse if I pay for it with the same note. | |

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 7/10/2009 12:06:27 PM | | I remember when I was 20 or so, travelling down to Greece, my friend and I had to swap enough cash to make us millionaires, even though we had to change it back again because we were ony travelling through and didn't spend half of it. youth, eh? | |

Let's hope he was referring to the coin!
How would you feel about a unified world currency?
It's probably 14th on the list of All Time Bad Ideas Proposed By Morons.

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 7/11/2009 3:01:07 PM | It'd make sense alright but I'm with the preservation of difference society on this.
Making everyone and everything the same would be to make the planet quite boring, having equal rights and equal access to a decent standard of education, health care, housing and employment etc don't have to be at the expense of norming everyone and losing cultural and traditional identities and such.
I guess in the not so distant future (albeit perhaps not in my life time) true globalism might see this happen, along with world citizenship, a borderless planet etc

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 7/11/2009 3:32:24 PM | I want to keep my own money so I can feel superior to everyone else...work for buttons in the UK, but in boggy backwater countries live like a king with the £s I earn...

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 7/11/2009 4:00:04 PM | | could just get rid of currency and instead of working for money.. work towards the advancement and bettering ourselves as a species... then atleast hunger and poverty would become extinct. | |

You could still do that. If we had the 'Worldo' as the world currency (well, its as ingenious as naming the European currency 'Euro'.. ) you could be earning 500 Worldos a week, which might equate to an average salary here, while someone living in Boggybackwater is earning 50 Worldos a week, which is an average salary over there.
But, like some others on here, I ilke the idea of different currencies, I love changing money when I go abroad and getting all confused about how much something costs, it all adds to the adventure of travelling.

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 7/12/2009 7:38:30 AM | | I'm no economist but I would be perfectly happy with it. I think anything which promotes some kind of global unification is going to be helpful. | |

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 7/12/2009 7:53:42 AM | For practical reasons it actually makes very good sense.
Businesses would find it much easier to traed with overseas partners and the average person would no longer have to pay charges to bank to change their cash whenever they went abroad.
However, I still can't see it happening. Even thought there aren't really any good practical reason not to do it there are far too many people who want to retain individual currencies for largely emotional reasons.

How would you feel about a unified world currency? Controlled by whom? The IMF? The World Bank? I tell you... I'd be much happier about the idea if it wasn't in the hands of such a complete bunch of gits.
The coin, which bears the words “unity in diversity,” Lol... you've got to love the irony of them putting an anarchist slogan on it...

| Russia to propse New World Currency at G-20 Posted: 10/19/2009 4:07:03 AM | | Nothing wrong with the idea in principle - but there are issues with a single currency for the diverse range of countries using the euro, so the idea of the whole world using the same is completely unrealistic.... | |
