| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 1:43:40 PM | I have no clue as to why people climb mountains.
The next person that tells me that they did the Grind in what ever amount of time will be wearing their teeth around their belt.
Hot tip, instead of going to the Running Room and discussing the intrinsic value of a TEVA sandal sit down and write a letter to your MLA and get them to fix this F'n Paramedic strike.
OR anything else that will further humanity.
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 1:46:51 PM | | that is a very odd comment! So what is your question? | |
|
| Grouse Grind and Paramedics Strike Posted: 7/10/2009 2:02:42 PM | I climbed up and DOWN Grouse Mountain. Never climb down. It is very dangerous and you may just need a paramedic or 2 or 3 . . . but NOOOOOOOOO . . . they are on strike . . . well, sort of, but they cannot really be on strike because they are an deemed an essential service.
Since paramedics have difficulty really striking, they need the publics support to get what they want at the bargaining table. I am reasonably sure they are not getting what they deserve in wages and benefits.

I have no clue as to why people climb mountains. They climb the mountains because they are there to climb.
It relates to school days when kids play "King of the mountain", claiming the highest point of whatever, a truck load of dirt or a mound of snow pushed up by a snow plough; and fending off any would-be assailants to the lofty throne.
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 2:47:17 PM | | Viper - I'm pretty sure that if you ever decided to hike up the Grouse Grind there would be a fight over who got to follow along behind you..... in case, y'know, you needed some mouth-to-mouth..... | |
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 4:29:21 PM | There's a whole whack of people out there that just love to be part of the '' in thing''.... Bragging about doing the Grouse is another look at me attention getter.... Desighner clothes, shoes etc.....same principal... There's alot more less ''Glamourous '' ways to stay fit but the Grouse is in.....so the sheep must flock.....
Beats supporting the paramedics eh?.......
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 4:40:52 PM | | I've never done the GG. I can't now because I have a cane, but even when I could I don't think I'd have made it 10 minutes without whining. I did Golden Ears once and I swear my friends were ready to throw me down the mountain. | |
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 7:25:32 PM | People climb mountains for the challenge and the sense of personal accomplishment they realize when they succeed. I guess if knocking someones teeth out gives another a sense of personal accomplishment, so be it.
I fully support paramedics receiving a healthy raise, but wage parity with a police officer ? Nope, you lost me there.
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 7:33:14 PM | The Grouse Grind is not mountain climbing. It's not even a hike, really, it's just an outdoor workout that's more pleasant than the stairmaster. All the reasons why people climb mountains ... are totally irrelevant to it. :P
I also wonder whatever this has to do with paramedics (or with anything). From what I've heard on the issue, I'm in favour of giving them a big raise and generally better treatment, anyway.
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 7:42:52 PM | | Grouse Grind trail is easy I find, its a good workout going up for sure. Going down I usually end up running it. It's a great adreniline rush. | |
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/10/2009 9:10:29 PM | I've lived on the North Shore for 40 plus years...never done the Grind.... I have climbed to the top of Grouse, Fromme and................... attempted to ride up the road to Cypress...that was a mistake....lol....lost part of my lung along the way ....if anyone finds it..... nevermind....history.
I think the 'Thing' about 'Doing the Grind' is to compete....to clock yourself...to challenge yourself.... or to better others. Just like the Knee Knacker on the Baden Powell Trail from end to end. As the Khatsalano Race from Horseshoe Bay to Park Royal use to be the 'thing to do'.
at least with the Khats you got a t-shirt...and the KK you get braggin rights!
me?... I would rather hike the Baden Powell Trail....great hikes...from Lions Bay to Deep Cove...one long trail. Check it out in one of those ancient hiking books around like..... 101 Best Hikes. Most of the hikes are local and vary from easy to challenging.
To answer the OP Question:... 'Cos it's There'.
Hell think about places on this planet where you got to drive miles and miles before you come across beautiful mountains like we have here....at our doorstep....we see them every day...can't miss them.
I don't hike anymore.... can't... I miss it....the mere thought of 'doing the Grind' would kill me. Kudos to those who are able to .....and enjoy it.

| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/11/2009 2:42:04 PM | I did the grind. It was boring for me. But I can see its value. If you are a single gal and you want to get some training in a safe, public environment, its got its merits.
As for me, I prefer the other North Shore hikes. Goat mountain, Brunswick, Harvey, the Lions, Coliseum. Going further up the 99, past Pemberton some amazing stuff opens up. Even Mt. Seymour on a mid week day, to the 3rd peak, is a rush.
The guys I know who do the grind are the bragging type, they run up fast, then get drunk, then cable car down.
I dont call it hiking, its a training run. Its tough and good for you. If I were training to trek Annapurna I would prolly do the grind alot to build cardio. But then again, you get more bang for your buck doing the Lions IMHO>

| Grouse Grind Posted: 7/12/2009 7:29:48 AM | I wasn't going to mention it, but thirty-odd minutes. Good luck catching me to pluck my teeth out | |
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/3/2009 8:54:42 PM | It's good for you? It has 2850 steps, if you hate everyone doing it's probably because you've never tried it. You feel great at the top + there are some sweet grizzly bears they have up there to check out.
You can't possibly compare that whatever you do on your spare time is better suited than the grouse grind. Try it sometime,
My times 55 minutes LOL | |

I have no clue as to why people climb mountains.
They climb the mountains because they are there to climb.
It seems bears like to climb mountains, too!
The bear went over the mountain, The bear went over the mountain, The bear went over the mountain, To see what he could see
To see what he could see, To see what he could see
The other side of the mountain, The other side of the mountain, The other side of the mountain, Was all that he could see
Was all that he could see, Was all that he could see, The other side of the mountain, Was all that he could see!

| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/4/2009 1:51:42 PM | Tis is my worst critter encounter:
They come in droves All creeds, all sizes, Gayish or serious Sporty heart and mind To show off brand new spandex and runners Leaving behind a trail of smelly sweat Stopwatch checking Breathing like whales And blow as much Pushing blubber, bones and muscles up the hill Like a mad herd of mindless sheep Disturbing bird and deer Then rush to see and mock Robbed of freedom the imprisoned grizz Go hit the bar to tank up fluids lost Gaze over town and sigh Oh joy, the pollution appears so far away We are so safe up here in nature Thirty minutes up, 15 down.... The mountain lion yawns Awaiting dusk It takes him 10 to just go up He takes the tram now, and thinks People smell much better in here...

| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/4/2009 3:13:24 PM | I did it a few years ago at the request of a friend. It was the OK in the fact that you get a workout, but it was lame in every other facet. A pile of city folks dressed in their cheesy Mountain Equipment Co-op garb wheezing up a staircase on a mountain all thinking they are cool. Getting to the top and seeing a few emaciated bears in a cage is not my idea of a good time either.
You can't possibly compare that whatever you do on your spare time is better suited than the grouse grind. Try it sometime, I did, it was lame. Do yourself a favour, try a trek up a mountain sometime, you'll never go back to a boring staircase.
My times 55 minutes LOL You go cowboy!
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/4/2009 4:45:12 PM | I take the skyride up Grouse. There is a road to the top; use to drive there. Head-up Mountain Highway from Lynn Valley, and the road goes right up to the Grouse Nest. I think there is a gate that blocks the road, its been many years now. God I sound like an old 13astard. | |
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/4/2009 10:53:48 PM | | Grouse Grind is great! Takes me 1hr. 15mins to run up. And about 35mins to run down. It might sound crazy running down, but I find it as a good adrenaline rush now and then. Sometimes I can agree its a heck of a lot easier taking the skyride down. | |
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/6/2009 10:46:57 PM |
the bragging type, they run up fast, then get drunk, then cable car down. ^^^ What's not to like about that?
Personally I'm attracted to well yeah the above but also the name.... The Grouse Grind... they SHOULD sell T-shirts! I'd make a trip over to get one.
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/7/2009 1:39:00 AM |
...cheesy Mountain Equipment Co-op garb... They may look cheesy...but that isn't MEC's fault...MEC has a lot of good stuff...it's the attitude that's cheesy.
I've never done the G.G...is it just a staircase? Staircases are a pain in the legs...switchbacks are way more easier...especially on the way down....on staircases your knee caps never get a break!
I met some people while hiking Telescope Peak in Death Valley, CA...(11,000+ ft...views are endless)...it was their first time there...they were clock watchers...I wonder if they actually saw anything?
Sure, a workout in nature is great, but if you don't stop to look...smell...and think...the other half of your body (brain) isn't getting a workout...
The thought..."in excellent shape but dumber than a sack of hammers"...comes to mind...
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/7/2009 6:13:51 AM | Debra - they do sell t-shirts in the Gift Shop. They say I survived the Grouse Grind.
Sounds to me like the Grouse Grind is like the opera or ballet. You either love it or hate it. For me it is a short-term outdoors challenge that beats an hour at the gym any day.
To each his own. | |

You either love it or hate it.
Some of us neither love nor hate it!
The Grouse Grind is a pleasant way to get a workout and if I lived close to it I'd probably go up and down three times a week. I don't live close to it, though, and I don't see any point to driving or busing for an hour just to get an hour's workout, even if it is a relatively nice place to do it. I could be spending that two hours riding my bike instead.
|
| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/8/2009 12:03:34 AM | Well if there are T-shirts, this shallow "look at me people" gal wants to do it! (after a trip to MEC of course- membership has its benefits)

| Grouse Grind Posted: 8/10/2009 7:06:21 PM | | the grouse grind SUCKS! guys that hike wear funny shoes, and have a penchant for unruly facial hair. none of this does anything for me. next...... | |
