| Deed Poll Posted: 7/12/2009 2:42:20 PM | I'm changing my name by deed poll and just found out that theres no need to pay a company to do it for you and you can easily do it yourself for free
Seems a bit odd that there isnt one organisation who you have to deal with
Anyway just wondering if anybody else has done it and whether it was easily accepted?
Also I know the two witnesses can't be related to me but wonder can they be related to each other? Like a mother and son I know of who I would ask to sign it. Also do they have to have known you for a certain length of time?
Thanks | |

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/12/2009 2:47:26 PM | I'm not sure about whether the witnesses can be related, or how much it costs; my solicitor did my deed poll as a freebie as I'd given their firm my custom in repect of my divorce and house conveyancing. I do however regret that I only changed my surname in the deed poll (back to my maiden name), I wish that I'd changed my first name to my nickname. Too late now, I'm not going through changing my name yet again!
VV I don't know if one 'has' to.. but my solicitor offered it for free, so why not? Plus it was easier to send certified copies (also free) to all the folks who I needed to change my details with. Still wish I'd changed my first name too, if my mind hadn't been clouded by the divorce I would now have a much more unique name!
Did your name 'legally' change?
I'm not sure? It changed when I married, I had to show the marriage certificate when changing name with the bank etc... and when I reverted back to my maiden name I showed the deed poll, but I could've shown my birth certificate... still didn't cost a bean, so I don't suppose it really matters!

Do you have to do it by deed poll?
On marriage you tell various bodies you have changed your name (if you want) on divorce you can do the same (well I did), no money changed hands. I still have the name I was born with that is stated on my birth certificate
No clue about the OP though.

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/12/2009 2:59:06 PM | | i was gonna change my name by deed poll to charles bronson..but that fecker who is in gaol got there before me..so im now thinking of changing it to reginald bosanquet after that fella who use to read the news at 10..real cool name i think... | |

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/12/2009 3:01:29 PM | As far as I know, you don't need to use a deed poll to change your name. You can call yourself anything you like at any time, as long as it isn't for fraudulent reasons. My brothers name was changed to the same as mine and my mums and he was always known by this name, the only time he hit a problem was when he was applying for a passport, he had to sign a statutory declaration to change it officially. Deed polls just seem like a way of making easy money for the company that issues the name change documentation. When my mum got divorced the second time, she reverted back to her previous married name, as that is my surname, shes always used that name since and never had any problems with it. My brothers surname was changed but he had to get a statutory declaration as he was applying for a passport for the first time and the name on his birth certificate was different to the name he was applying under. | |

Funny you should say that! A friend of mine changed his surname because he hated it, and his first name to his nickname. His real name is Tarquin Pigg-Fiddler........but he's far happy being called Porkie Smith.......

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/12/2009 4:00:02 PM | | I changed mine when i turned 18 to my stepfathers name, as he was my dad, had no probs did through a solr, i had no problems over the years change d when i got married and still carry my ex husbands name as its my childrens surname ....... | |

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 12:20:10 AM | | you can do it by putting an ad in the local paper stating a change of name or by registering your new name with your doctor then you will get a new medical card with your new name this is how a friend did it. | |
|
| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 12:47:06 AM | On marriage/divorce there is no need to do anything but adopt your married name or revert to your maiden name. The change of name on marriage is merely convention. Too many solicitors etc make easy money from women wishing to revert to their maiden names and convincing them that a deed poll is necessary. How can you need a deed poll to use the name on your birth certificate?
As Pauline says, you can call yourself whatever you wish, whenever you wish so long as it is not for fraudulent purposes.

Any way of adopting a new name is a 'legal' change.

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 1:55:38 AM | | When I reverted to my maiden name, I only advised people of my intention to do so, changed my cheque accounts, advised the facility providers etc. - basically I think in this country we can call ourselves anything we jolly well like..... | |
|
| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 1:56:51 AM | ^^^^ even easier, just log onto your profile and go to your settings.....
failing that just delete and start all over again....

Not saying that i'm word perfect or anything, but something screams out to me that there was also "Busty Saint-Claire" as one of the other options.
edit. If i had to change my name, I would probably call myself "Hugh Cumber"

Yes well this was what concerned me. I was thinking I was told I would have to cancel my passport and apply for a new one but people have said that you dont need to.
I heard that one bloke changed his name to:

This is acceptable EVERYWHERE where your old name is referred to. Passports, driving licence, credit cards, local council. Just go see a lawyer. You're making it harder for yourself believe it or not :)

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 3:56:19 AM | | Msg 17 i knew there was a third choice but i had forgotten what it was. Thanks for the reminder but now i dont know what to choose. On a serious note I gave my daughter her fathers surname but when it became apparent he was not going to be a part of her life i stopped using it and she has always been known by my name. I have never changed it with any legal document but i undertand that she can be known legally by any name chosen and all through school and at our doctors it has never been any problem. With a passport we just had to write a letter stating why her name was different to that on her birth certificate and they issued it in the name she uses now which is a double barrelling of both names. | |

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 4:12:02 AM | I have used a stagename for nearly 40 years.
On bank accounts I had to have written my.... (proper name) 'trading as' (stage name).
Whether legislation has changed since my accounts were set up I don't know.

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 4:31:00 AM | All my life I was called as my last name Chapman, then at the age of 18 I had to apply for my 1st grown-up passport, asked my mum for my birth certificate and on it the last name was Lovatt.
I dropped Chapman and began using Lovatt, no solicitors, no filling in forms and I have never had a problem because of it.

| Deed Poll Posted: 7/13/2009 6:09:37 AM | I dont know if its still the same but when i changed my name all that had to be done was simply write & inform the Dhss , pensions & health dept then the DVLC & Passport office saying ...henceforth i wish to be known as ..???? Thats it, dead simple . Regards using a stage name ...even easier ! Just use it !!! bank account, gas bills, electric ,rates etc... I imagine security has tightened up theses past 20 years , & might all be more difficult . Back then it was so easy ... i had 2 different driving licences, 3 different names on credit cards 2 different bank accounts....jeez, i must of been mad , too honest . i coulda made a fortune ..lol! | |

I'm assuming he'll be known to his pals simply as Motherwell.
