The Canucks will be somewhat different team this season compared to the last one, with a few roster changes. At least the over-paid and under-achieving Sundin won't be holding them back.
I think their game schedule will be a bigger factor than in normal seasons, because they have to vacate their home arena at GM Place, to accommodate the Winter Olympics. Instead of a somewhat balanced spread of Home games and Away games they now have a cluster of Home games and a cluster of 14 consecutive Away games during the Olympics.
The team will have to show incredible resilience and fortitude to do well with this crazy schedule.

I'd say--- DON'T EVER COUNT THEM OUT. THIS IS HOCKEYTOWN. The canucks will look good, but both Chicago and Pittsburgh will also be strong. It stands to reason, historically speaking, if you can beat the Red Wings in the playoffs, its all yours. LETS GO RED WINGS The graphic below shows the NHL chasing the Wings javascript:smilie(' ')

Go Canucks, Go! You might even turn Xavery into a hockey fan.

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 7/16/2009 9:51:03 AM | Seems to me that Gillis has faith in the twins to take the canucks to the next level and has given them a 5 year contract instead of going after a couple high calibur free agents to replace them.
Myself, I do not think they are the type of players that you can count on as your # 1 line to take you to the finals. They make one of the top 2/3 of a second line but they will never match up with the likes of Crosby/Malkin, Datsyuk/Holmstrom or even against Detroits # 2 line of Zetterberg/Hossa. Chicagos young guns of Toes/ Taves outplayed them in the playoffs.
The canucks have to drasticaly change the make-up of the team and rebuild and at this point they have still not resigned Luong (as far as I know).
I thought last year would be the best chance they would have with money and cap room to pick up a rental player to push them over the top but they sat still at the deadline.

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 7/16/2009 9:52:33 AM | Right now toooo many ??????????'s Wait till the summers over, see what overpriced and innefective player Gillis signs ( last year it was the underachievers Demitra and Sundin) one was an old client and not worth what he was paid, the other was supposed to show us how Gillis wasn't afraid to rock the boat, well the boat was overloaded with bloated payrolls, and sunk quiestly in Chicago.
Lose Demitra, unchain Hodgson, Grabner and Raymond together, let them show what young legs and skill can do in this league. Perhaps package some "extra talent" and try to get us a defenceman that can actually run a powerplay, ( and maybe even hit the net?) how many times did we hear...."Salo winds up,....shot wide", it was as common as "great save Luongo" So I say wait and see, what "Sundin Miracle" Gillis trys this summer.
And someone explain to me the way Ottawa, New York, etc continually sign high priced players and stay under the cap, and we are whining about paying mediocre players and skirting the cap.? Someone needs to re-examin the way our contracts are structured.

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 7/16/2009 10:14:34 AM | I'm not holding my breath for what I see unfolding ....... The best teams, the winning teams have depth, grit, toughness, talent and spectacular goaltending.... We saw what happened when Luongo went down, we also saw how badly Lou played in the playoffs.....the canucks can't rely on him, proven... They can't rely on the Sedins, proven....yet these players seem to think they're worth 6 mill plus a season..... Our defence is weak at best, our offence is inconsistant, we lack toughness and grit..... I'm predicting another less than stellar yr.....so far anyways.
These saleries and egos are way over the top, I truly think it demorolizes the scale players especially when they're outplaying, out hitting and sometimes out scoring the high priced egos.....
Nope, no cup again but what the hell.......there's alot of people making a sh1tload of money off the backs of those who constantly hope and pray for a winning team.... When I buy anything, I expect it to ''work'', I quit buying the Canucks years ago......

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 9/6/2009 2:03:02 PM | I was pleased to hear Roberto Luongo has signed a contract with the Canucks, but was surprised to hear it is a 12-year contract ($64 million US). That is a long term!
Hopefully the contract will improve Roberto's confidence and puck-stopping, and the team can provide him with the defencive support and offence to win the cup, at least once.
Twenty-four days untl the first game of the season.

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 9/7/2009 1:08:02 AM | With the way the salary cap is calculated, teams are kind of forced to structure long term deals that are front end loaded (welcome to the salary cap era)
In the salary cap calculation, the average salary over the term of the contract is used. With Luongo's contract, that works out to $5.33 million per year, which most people would probably say is under market right now.
However, they can structure the deal so that say $9M is paid the first year, and declining after that so that by year 12 he is paid say $1M, as long as the total adds up to $64M over 12 years. So, the player gets what he wants (big bucks right now) and the team gets what they want (low salary against the cap).
However, if it were a short term contract, it would be hard to get an average salary of $5.33M and still give Luongo what he wants for the next few years as salary.

Hopefully the contract will improve Roberto's confidence and puck-stopping,
Improve???? Ever meet the man???? He reaks of confidence. I doubt very much if his puck stopping abilities needs much improving either, The only thing that Luongo needs to understand is that he can't score,,,and he shouldn't be trying to. All he has to do is stop the puck. I personally don't think the twins are the answer here,,,but I could be wrong. They just keep proving my correct every year.
If there ever was a way you could go out and sign up some "heart" I would be all for that. I heard a lot whining about Linden since I've been in this town, but he's the closest thing I've seen in a Canuck uniform(other than Luongo) that is, at the very least, required for a championship team. Of course, the Canuck faithful tried jumping all over Luongo after the last game of the year. Not only was it disgraceful, it also showed me the hockey intelligence of the average everyday Canuck "fan".

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 9/7/2009 6:02:22 AM | Imho Luongo is not the problem nor is he the "Saviour" of the team. The guy above me mentione the twins, well they have improved year after year and are undervalued as far as I am concerned. Outside of Vancouver they are almost invisible which is pretty crazy considering the numbers they continually put up. The contracs for them and Luongo are good solid moves.
When it come to Luongo, I just wish he would take more games off and allow the back-up to get more games in. The benefit would be a healthier Luongo. I have heard the arguments about him wanting and saying he needs to play so many games, but the guy is human and I would like to see him put his ego aside and keep some gas in the tank for a long playoff stretch. He wasn't "all that" the last playoff series. Not blaming him for the losses but I think maybe he could have been better in the Chicago series.

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 9/7/2009 11:48:49 PM | The Oilers won more Stanley Cups in a Decade than Vancouver will ever win in our lifetime, and they had some of the best players ever to play in the NHL, something Vancouver can't claim.
Doesnt matter, now they have all "Gon Fishin"....and the Oilers Suck.
i still owe ya

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 9/8/2009 1:49:42 PM | Let's discuss how this inter-flight ban by the US aviation bodies is knee-capping Canadian sports teams... specifically the NHL teams in Canada at the start of the season no less.
I call conspiracy here..... well what do you think?
A dispute between Canada and the United States over charter airline flights is causing havoc for sports teams across North America and could disrupt the coming NHL season.
Transportation officials in both countries have banned charter airlines carrying sports teams from making multiple stops, something that had been allowed for years.
If the bans remain in place, NHL teams will have difficulty playing back-to-back games in the United States or Canada and could be forced to return to their home country between each game.
The ban also affects the Toronto Blue Jays and the Toronto Raptors.
Miami Air International, a Florida company that provides charter services for the Blue Jays and five U.S.-based NHL teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins, was told this week to cancel nearly 60 flights to Canada in September for NHL pre-season games. The company must also drop four Jays trips.
The bans “represent a potentially big problem for our teams,” said Richard Peddie, chief executive of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors.
“This is truly an unfortunate situation at the moment,” said Ricky Olczyk, the Edmonton Oilers’ assistant general manager. “But we remain hopeful that this matter will be resolved in an expeditious fashion.”

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 9/8/2009 2:51:26 PM | Well I am moving to Vancouver so it would be nice if they made run at the cup. They've got the players to do it. Goaltending is strong too. Doing the deal with sedins better pay off. Last time I lived in Van was pre-gm place so it will be nice to see a game in the new arena. Maybe when the leafs come, it could be what converts me (if they lose). | |

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 10/6/2009 11:30:46 AM | Luongo is renowned for being a "slow-starter", but the way he is starting off this season is discouraging.
A fellow Canuck fan suggested to me that Roberto securing that lucrative 12-year contract appears to have diminished his incentive to exceed.
Hopefully Roberto will disprove that accusation!... starting with the next game.

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 10/6/2009 1:28:59 PM | Kinda funny to say but Luongo didn't plat that poorly last night, asa golatender he was in position to do his job..............until his "defence" or lack of wasn't doing theirs. The first goal should never have happened, Luongo kept Nash wide and gave him nothing to shoot at. Bieksa draged his wornout butt back to check.toooooooo late, and it was an easy 2 on 0 for the goal. The next one same thing, by the third goal Luongo was cheating and was getting caught. If teh players in front of him would do their jobs, stick to their assignements, ( and we could get rid of O'Brien) you'd see a diffferent ending. Look at the rest of the games goals, watch them in order, it's luongo losing faith in his "help"
Of course I could be wrong and he's sucking terribly because now he's got the money he doesn't care........of course it could be worse, we could have the Bulin wall in net.

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 10/6/2009 4:10:29 PM | Well I must say I have my hopes up every game, and the first 3 of the season have been slighlty discouraging to say the least..but being the Canucks fan I am..I will continue to support our team thru out the season Luongo needs to get his confidence back, or start caring about his job..or whatever the case may be..and yes..the rest of the team needs to back him up badly! I would love to see our boys make it to the playoffs again, and then on to bring the cup home finally(yeah I wish big)..annnyyways..just my 2 cents..GO CANUCKS GO!!! | |

| Playoff hopes for Vancouver Canucks for 2009-10 season Posted: 10/6/2009 9:35:13 PM | Well...there's a whole bunch of naysayers on here. For me it's a good thing, I put $100 on them in Vegas this weekend. Hopefully I'll be heading down for a big win in the Spring.

I still love the nucks, even if I screamed eff you to the TV about 15 times during Monday's game...
