I am curious of other people's workout pet peeves
Posted: 7/16/2009 7:18:30 AM
I have been working out for over 10 years at different gyms. I believe I have proper etiquette when I workout. I do however have many pet peeves: stenches of cologne when someone walks by, loud noises from slamming the weights, guys using the hair dryers to dry their junk, ETC. . Can we start a pet peeve list of what people who frequent health clubs are annoyed by?

Unfriendly people. Granted, we're not there to socialize, but geez--"judgment-free" zone does not have to mean "avoid eye contact" zone! A bit of warmth and levity makes things go more smoothly when we're waiting for another to get off a particular weight set.

I think this has been done a few times but what the hell.

The biggest of all is people at the gym that are there to socialize and not work out. Go to a bar and get out of the dam way!

People on cell phones while in the free weight area. Cologne. Smelling nasty cigarette smoke on someone when they get up on the Elliptical next to you.Rudeness. People showing up in make up and work out outfits acting as if they are so tried from doing 3 exercises. I am pretty lucky now because the gym I use now is mainly men and bodybuilders, so there is not too much drama...but once in a while it turns into a Circus. The gym I was at before was just a lot of giant people not actually working out and were there more to make freinds.

I can't stand it when people sit there on the phone on the machine you need to use then go off on you when you ask them if you can work in! Didn't happen to me, happened to a member of a gym I worked at though. Also... the dropping weights thing is really, really annoying, I've offered to spot people so they don't have to drop the weights and they tell me they're going to drop it anyway and I can catch it if I want to... real nice.

Dropping the weights really annoy me. My opinion is that their mom put them in a crib when they were young and neglected them.. So now they come to the gym to get extra attention. If you cannot set them down, don't pick them up.

- Cell phones
- Cologne or Cigarette smells
- Unnecessary/Excessive/Loud moaning and grunting.
- Ridiculously bad form to lift heavier weights to show off.
- Taking rests on machines while others are waiting.

Ok, off my soap box now.

Grunting. Screaming. Moaning..while lifting weights. Dropping weights.
Treadmill high incline walking while holding on to the top at 2 mph. Why bother?
Cell phones.
People who stop you during a workout or stretch to ask you stupid questions.
Leering. Mirrors are obvious too.
People who monopolize machines, and people who don't wipe equipment down.
People who have to park at the door of the gym and then do a 10 mile run.
People who strip down to nothing, stretch, baby oil or lotion themselves or hang skanky gym clothes to dry in the sauna.
Women who use hand dryers to dry THEIR junk.
I won't even begin to address sanitary concerns in showers and bathroom stalls. Ick.
Gyms that don't keep up on the spray and paper towel supply. Nothing I hate more than finding an empty solution bottle after a workout.

I could list 20+ things that I see people do every day in the gym that bugs me and all of them are a rule violation so it comes down to one thing.

Gym staff / owners that will not enforce their rules.

What I see is the biggest rule breakers are also the ones that are buddies with all of the staff.

People who don't wipe down the machines and who fling sweat.

I had a guy get on the treadmill next to me. I was listening to my music minding my own business then all of a sudden it started to hit me. The guy was running and sweating so much that it was being thrown off of him and on me and the treadmill I was on. I had to stop before I gagged.

Also those who don't wear deodorant... your going to the gym.... chances are you'll need it.

^^^There's one I forgot. BO in a place that sometimes doesn't provide a lot of AC, and that everyone around you is sweating and having trouble breathing. Ugh! I'm a fanatic about deodorant and carry it everywhere, so I have it in my gym bag - it's odd to me someone else can't tell they stink in an environment like this, or at least don't check to see if they're the ones who do.

I go to a smaller gym and my pet peeve is the people who bogart the freeweights. Ever so often i'll go in there and a pair of douches will have like 4 sets of free weights where they are working out. This gym has 1 set of free weights so its a little annoying when you have to deal with them because their too stupid/lazy to put the weights back.

BO varies as a pet peeve. It doesnt bother me if i have to smell a little BO, but some people smell as if they havent showered in weeks. I have to imagine their hippy people or paranoia nuts who think deodorant is gonna give them cancer.

Since I am the guy who actually does curls in the squat rack which is a pet peeve of many, I will say right now, I do offer to move if someone asks to use it or even looks at it.

My only pet peeve is folks that like to do circuit training with various equipments but won't allow you to work in on any of those equipment until they finish their entire circuit.

Anyone who pulls their free weights of the rack and works out by moving back 2 inches.
Therefore, tying up about 6-8 dumbbells in various weights. Without a doubt THE WORST

Excessive sets on a particular bench or machine. Im talking the guy who does the same exercise at least 8-10 sets. ?!?!?!

Obese people using ab machines. Cant really see those without losing weight.

Can we all agree on that one.

speaking to me. Do not speak to me. I am not there to socialize. I am not there to make friends. I am there to do what I need to. I speak to about 3 people there and they are all high ranked powerlifters.

People who want to ask me a question while I'm in my set.

People who cry about me icy-hotting my knees. Were not at a prissy gym here. Its one of the most hard core gyms in the country. Deal with it. Were a powerlifting gym.

People who hover around you.

People who try to spot you when you dont ask for help. If I didnt ask for a spot I dont need one. Dont try to be helpful. I was doing pause benches for 5 seconds to be sure I'll be able to handle if the judge doesnt call it fast enough. He runs and grabs one side of the bar any yanks up.

If you ask me for help and I help you, dont 5 minutes later do the total oppisite of what I told.

Dont cry about me making noise. if your handling the weight I do you will make noise.

I would have no problem with that. If its open use it, but if someone needs to use it for safety let them be.

Those are basically the main reasons why I have my own gym at home.

1) The smell of Body odor.
2) Slamming on weights.
3) Pool of sweat in one area
4) etc etc.

^ What vdhc said!!!!!! Yes, this happened to me recently. Some old guy just came up to me during an intense leg/plyo day and started spouting off about what I should be doing to lose weight. Even if my bodyfat were 50%, it's none of his business and I never asked for his help!!!!! Besides, I had just watched him lift less than I routinely do, only without even decent form. Actually, he bore a strinking resemblance to a woodpecker. There are many people who frequent my gym that I do ask for advice. Please, folks, wait until someone asks you! You never know what goals others have.

- People trying to lift more than they can... THEN slamming the weight down
- The men who take 5 minute rests between their sets of FIVE reps. (Honestly buddy... will you finish already so the fat girl can do her squats and dead lifts!!)
- Loud MP3 players
- That woman who was drying her hair in the locker room when I got there and was STILL drying her hair when I finished my work out.
- Along with others... people who don't wipe down the equipment after sweating all over it.
- That guy who uses the machines like a spider monkey on crack
- 4 people standing in front of the water fountain chattering
- Someone (other than a trainer) giving me diet and exercise advice without my asking.

- People with terrible form
- Overweight people trying to give me advice on how to gain lean mass
- People that take up as much room as possible
- Not unracking weights
- Staff not doing their job
- People that talk to me during a set
- Being asked how much more I have to go when I'm about to start a set...then them watching me do it
- Constantly being asked what i'm on...as if that's what got me to where I am today. It's hard work and eating well!
- People with bad gas...ugh
- People that do the minimum weight on machines and take 5 minute rests on them
- Douchebags decked out in all the gym apparel and not a clue as to wtf they're doing
