Who can you call?

When the chips are down, and you need help from someone for something BIG, who do you call? Are you sure s/he will be there for you?

Let me elaborate, at least to 200 characters (%$&!*%). I think I could call any one of my family members for help--for example, should my car break down on the side of the road at 4 am (three live in the area). But I'm not sure I have even ONE friend I *would* call to help me out. I may call one or two, but I wouldn't know for sure if they would help me out.

To reiterate:
Who would you call?
Would you be 100% certain that person would help you?

The first I would call would be 1911

After that, my two best friends since childhood and/or my father. All 3 of them are dead-on reliable and we would do anything for each other.

Without a doubt I have many people I could call in an emergency. One person in particular comes to mind - I refer to her as my shovel buddy.

A good friend will help you move, a really good friend will help you move a body.

Seriously... I've been in the 3:00 am position of needing help and she's jumped out of bed and been there for me... without hesitation.

If we are using your example, i.e. a car breakdown, I would call AMA (or AAA for the American posters/CAA for the remaining Canadian province posters).

In any other of life's situations, I am self-reliant to a fault and I prefer not to ask or depend upon anyone other than myself. Having said that, when I was diagnosed with an illness last fall, I had countless offers of assistance to help me through. I did not ask for this assistance, it was offered and I gratefully accepted some of that assistance.

If its very early in the morning and I need to get home, probably my pastor. He has done it before and know his wife and him would do it again. They even stayed with me at the hosptital until all the xrays were taken. It started at around 11 or so and ended at around 3 or 4

My sons live in other states and my sibs live 6 hours away. But, I do have a neighbor that helps me with most things. Thank goodness, I haven't had any real big emergency. But she has watched my house and pet, driven me home from an operation, checking up on me throughout the week and if she doesn't see any activity going on, such as my car moving, lights on and off, she will call to make sure I'm okay.

For car break downs there's AAA.

OP

Each of us is an individual case, but this question show-cases the importance of having friends. You will get different answers from different people but it all boils down to friendship, even from family members. George G. Summer had it all wrong, we're not individual islands, we exist within a society of people, any of them with the potential to reach out to help, but unless we, in turn, touch them, in some way, well, it's time to call AAA for help. Nothing wrong with that, but AAA won't insist on inviting you back to the house, and making you feel better about your blown out radiator, all the while, the family pet is offering his services by saying "Pet me! It'll make you feel better!"

My neighbors, I've driven nutz more than a few times even then they have always been there for me except the racist mexicans up front..My family, Gods name usually pours forth..If I'm depressed my katz usually pick me up somewhat..Kinda funny this should come up. My apartment gets real hot in the Summer and I'm kinda heavy I took a walk down the street to the water machine and on the way back I was breathing quite heavy this homeless fella ahead of me got this frightened look on his face like he thought I was about to drop dead and he took off like a bat outta Hell..Sonofabi*ch won't be getting any change outta me...

One of my kids lives two hours away, the other two days away. If they lived closer, I'm sure they would do whatever they could for me if I needed anything. My friends are all long distance as well. My brother lives next door and has helped me more than anyone else ever has. I don't even have to ask him. If he knows I need something and he's able to do something about it, he just does it.

To try and keep it short. I am glad i have friends that will do anything for me as i for them. One of my best friends ecspecially i know i could call right now and say anything and he would be there to help. He's the kind of guy if i called at 3 am and said i was in the next state over and needed to be picked up he would not ask "what the heck and how the heck did you get there?" He would simply come get me .

My mother, father, sister and brother inlaw are all the same way.

My father or my mother, depending on the situation. Kinda complicated, given that they're both dead - but I've never come across a situation that couldn't be solved by asking myself, "What would {mudder|fodder} do?

Definitely my parents even though they live in a different state. My dad would probably get on a plane immediately depending on how grave the situation is. After them, I have 3 best friends who I trust with my life and vice versa. I'm glad I have them in my life

I usually call Robert McCall, a.k.a. the Equalizer.
Make up some story about how organized crime is pressuring me to pay protection money.
After a short while though he recognizes my voice and then hangs up.
Is because I've called so many times in the past just to hear his accent.

So you already know that God is going to turn you down or you wouldn't need that second call, and you're only partly confident of your wife helping you out? I'd be extremely careful not to get into the position where you need any help if I were you, it sounds as if you're pretty much on your own if you do!

I've been in the 3:00 am position of needing help and she's jumped out of bed and been there for me... without hesitation.

The kind of friend I like is when I need her at 3.00am she'll jump into bed and be there for me... without hesitation.

Family, but most don't live in state. So that would leave brother, ex-inlaws, brother's in-laws.
Good friends I consider family and only have a few in state that qualify. But know a lot of good people that would help if need be, if only I had their #, lol.

What was the question? Cause I would ask total stranger if need be and there you have it new friend.

I can ask my family for help, and they'd be willing to do anything for me... unfortunately they're much more likely to screw it up than actually be helpful. They mean well, but I'm better off not asking them. My best friend would help me in the direst of circumstances, but only the direst of circumstances. He'd die for me, but I'd be hard pressed to convince him to walk across the room to get me a drink. With your example of being stranded, if I was in the middle of the desert 100 miles from anywhere he'd pick me up, if I was 10 miles from home he'd tell me "tough shit, walk" because he trusts that I can. Same thing applies in reverse too. We're both prideful people though, and aren't the type to even consider asking for help unless the need is desperate.

Over twenty years, I've used AAA for transportation emergency's. Actually have used it to help friends when riding with them, more then I've had to use it for myself. I am very self reliant & enjoy handling things on my own. However, if ever in dire straights, I've never been without support assistance from the people in my life. I think one gets back, what they give out to others.
