Trying to find a nice neighbourhood to live in in Hamilton
Posted: 7/21/2009 5:44:11 PM
I have lived my whole life up on the Stoney Creek mountain, and have been taught to be scared of the big bad 'downtown Hamilton' I have no idea what areas are safe for a single gal to be looking for a place to live. I am looking to find an apartment place in the city - upper or lower - where I will be living around people my age. My current area is all people in their late 40s early 50's with no kids at home anymore, or new couples with little kids.

Any suggestions? I like the idea of westdale or Hess area, but again - dangerous downtown. lol

Thanks

I heard it doesn't matter where you live because the large stacks on top of the factories turn into giant vacuums with claws. At night they suck you up and digest you. Hence the reason for the population decline.

They say many have moved out west but I know the truth.

westdale is nice. dundas is pretty cool and has some neat spots. the mountain isnt a bad choice either. downtown is kinda shady but its does have its nooks and crannies that are quaint. the nicest and safest best would be dundas or westdale.

avoid the city centre as its the ghetto. I would know since I live in the middle of it.

hope this helps :)

I would agree with the theoddestspot. There are alot of nooks & crannies that are very nice. I moved to Hamilton a year ago & was very skeptical about the whole thing. I ended up close to the downtown & to my surprise, I really love it. Yes there are alot of shady characters, but that's just the way it is in any larger city. It's amazing what you will find when you really start looking. As mentioned, the mountain is a good choice as well. I have been very impressed with how friendly Hamiltonians are. :) I feel completely safe where I am, so don't let what you may have heard, scare you away from a perfect opportunity. If you need advice about a certain area, feel free to pm me & I will try my best to help.

Good luck!

The area bounded by Main St, Locke, Bay and Aberdeen has a ton of apartments in large buildings, small sixplexes and a ton of duplexes. You'll find great restaurants, bars, entertainment and shopping all close by. And luckily for you, that's where you'll find a whole lot of people in your demographic. And the ones that coe there from T.O. are all stunned by how cheap the rent is. Its a nice leafy part of the city that has a mix of apartments and victorian homes. Its our version of Yonge and Eglinton.

I'm not sure anyplace is safe to live in Hamilton, I used to work out of there. Hauling freight into the U.S. I would come back a week later to find my pickup truck covered in a light green dusting........Hamilton air is very polluted with all the burn stacks they have. I would try the mountain as suggested.

The area bounded by Cumberland Ave, Main st, Gage Ave and Wentworth st is a nice area to live. Have lived here myself for half a century and know many people who like living here and have no plans to move. New neighbours just moved in next door and their from Mississauga and say they love the area.Your close to Gage Park and the rail trail on the escarpment side and Myrtle Park and Lifesavers Park have large childrens play structures.

I have lived in Hamilton my entire life, mostly east end, there are bad spots all over, my dream is to live south of main street(between ottawa and gage) beneath the mountain, it's very beautiful up there, and there are duplexes and triplexes up there that I am sure you will like, best of luck.

hey jen, ok first off, not every area downtown is dangerous, just like not every area up the mountain is safe. if you havent alredy moved... and you get the chance , send me an email, i dont feel like going too in depth for the forum lol, but im born and raised here, and know of a ton of great and or cheap nice places to look in the city. but i can say that westdale is a very nice area, a good community, and you would find a lot more people your age living there. but near hess, i wouldnt reccommend. no offence to anyone that lives there, just i know its not a very safe area, let alone for a single woman in her mid 20's...

I wouldn't live in Hamilton again unless it was the Mountain area; preferably the West Mountain. Lower Hamilton, if you stick to west of the City Hall, and south of Cannon, you'll be OK. Ferther west the better - Westdale, Dundas, and if you have the money, Greensville or Ancaster.

I may find myself moving there and living with my brother.
I am not happy but it is the way the economy is.
I think every town.. big or small has the less desirable areas to live in.

The city is much greener than people realize. The Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail go through it. There are waterfalls & parks near Dundas. People just see the old steel mill district going over the bridge to Niagara.
I grew up in a small town - Brantford, a half hour from Hamilton - that for years was voted Worst Downtown In Canada( while also getting kudos for having best Parks & Gardens!) - bad enough that the horror film 'Silent Hill' was shot there, using the core as the centre of an abandoned ghost town. Not much set dressing was needed.
But things were always nice in the suburbs, and it has picked up in the last few years. Now, even though it's an hour from Toronto, it's become another T.O. bedroom community.

Well there are some nice homes in the Scenic Drive and upper Paradise area. I have lived around here for almost 10 years. Nice parks within walking distance and the stairs down to the Chedoke golf course are great for exercise as I go up and down them frequently. Also great bus service but don't live on Upper Paradise itself to much traffic but there are a number of affordable homes on the side streets. Also there is a wide range of age groups.
