Boxing question

Is there at this time any TRUE heavy weight contenders? I mean a dominate, tour de force heavy weight like Holyfield, Tyson, Lewis? Everything has either went to Europe, or Mexico and lets not forget the philippines. When I say contenders I mean American..Any boxing fans have any insight on this? The smaller guys are a lot of fun to watch. I am just ready to see two matched heavy weights in the ring...

No there is no American heavyweight contenders.
Unless you count Christopher "The Nightmare" Arreola.
Mexican fighter from Riverside, CA.
I believe he is still undefeated and is going to fight a one of the klitschko brothers.

chadcuba is right. Why would I, a former boxing fan, watch a typical boxing match instead of a UFC match? There's no contest...it's like the difference between ballet and football. I'm not saying today's boxers aren't good; it's just boring. Recently I've watched some old boxing matches (Patterson vs Chuvalo, some Tyson bouts, Foreman vs Holyfield, Marciano vs Moore, some golden gloves, etc) but there's no way it compares to the intensity and versatility of MMA.

Unless you bring back Ali, boxing is dead.

I differ with the above statements. UFC is basically street fighting and boxing is an more of an art.

When the Klitchkos run roughshod over people, you know the division is dead.

I agree, boxing is a very shilled art; UFC is street fighting no skills but must be physically able to take a beating or give one.....

I also agree boxing is at a crossroad so the sport must find boxers that are skilled and colorful or the sport of boxing will fade into history...Ali faced boxers that would run roughshod over the Klitchkos.....Boxing without people like Ali,Frazier and Leonard will not survive....

Totally ignorant statement. No skills? Do you know how hard it is to learn the grappling stuff? Ridiculous.

No American ones that I can think of. I think the only guy that could beat either of the Klitchko's at the moment is David Haye.

Maybe young amatuer American heavyweight boxers have migrated into UFC type fighting? There's nothing wrong with boxing...but according to Bruce Lee, we either adapt or stagnate. So it's up to boxing promoters to adapt... They need publicity like Ali "fighting" a wrestler.

Any boxer willing to take on a UFC guy would help boxing. As for anyone who says UFC isn't a skill! :D That shows you have never been in the ring and/or never trained
in a grappling art. It's MORE difficult and MUCH MUCH MUCH more skillful.

You not only have to learn boxing but wrestling, Ju Jitsu, Muay Thai (for some) etc.
Today's MMA amatuer fighters can wipe the floor with amatuer boxers imho. There's just no competition...not only is the MMA guy a boxer but he has wrestling skills ala
quickly dragging down the boxer and breaking off limbs/choking him out.

To say there is no skill in MMA, is to be totally ignorant of the fighting arts and what Bruce Lee did. Peace.

Best heavyweight puncher of all time?

Would Tyson defeat Foreman? I saw an old show of Foreman before he fought and lost to Ali. Dang, Georgie is slow. Would Tyson have defeated him? Or is it impossible to have put them together at their primes because Tyson had more of a modern training?

Would Rocky Marciano have beaten Tyson? I can't see Marciano as having beat Foreman. Foreman looks too big. What do you think?

Boxing is far from dead, the sweet science is here to stay. MMA is good too and some of it is fun to watch but I'd rather watch a good boxing match any day thanks. MMA as it is right now has some real issues that make for many boring matches IMO. There are some good heavyweight boxers out there, not too sure there are any great American heavyweights on the horizon but I'm not American so I don't really care about that. Lennox Lewis was the last great Canadian boxer(raised, trained, fought for in the olympics), I'm anxiously awaiting the next one.

I wonder though why every boxing discussion has to now degenerate into a boxing vs MMA debate. Seems rather pointless to me. It's comparing apples and oranges. Neither has to die for the other to thrive. I enjoy MMA and have been watching it for more than 15 years and I love boxing, always have. Just because there's Nascar doesn't mean Formula One has to die...you know? We all know that most boxers would lose in an MMA fight unless they landed a good punch or two early(just ask Tim Sylvia ), likewise MMA fighters wouldn't last in a boxing match against a good boxer. MMA fighters are like jack of all trades, master of none. Boxers specialize in one discipline and many master it. Even half ways decent boxers though can have a good career in MMA, Chris Litle is just one example of this and I prefer watching his matches to most MMA fighters. At least you know it's going to be a fight when he steps in there. Not so much hugging against the cage stepping on each others toes and laying on top of each other throwing silly hammer fists.

I think the thing with the heavyweight divisions these days is that the boxers rely more on their size than anything else. They are not athletic like the Ali's the Tysons and the Frazier's. Look at Valuev for example, he's just huge. Heavyweight boxers these days don't seem to have any energy, they just throw a punch or two and clinch, hence why we see someone like Klitschko winning fights with just his left hand.

The smaller guys have plenty of energy, they're fast and powerful and enjoyable to watch. It will be a long time before there are any interesting heavyweight fights.

Heavyweight boxing has been pretty lame since Tyson's downfall, but I still enjoy the lower weight classes. How awesome would a Pacquiao/Mayweather fight be?

What an intelligent post. If you don't like boxing then why bother posting in a thread about boxing? In fact any top boxer would pound the crap out of any and all MMA pussies. At least boxers don't lay on top of each other humping away. BTW, there is far more 'hugging' in the average MMA match. Have you ever even watched a boxing match? Somehow I doubt you'd understand what you are watching. Anywho...

I find Mayweather to be a very boring fighter to watch. He's good yes, almost too good. I'd love to see him fight Pacquiao. I think Pac man might be someone who could actually beat ole Mayweather. They have been talking about it but Mayweather wants too much money so not sure if it will happen or not.

That would be an awesome fight. I'm well looking forward to Pacman/Cotto.

As for the comment about MMA being much better than boxing. Bullshit. Boxing is a much more attractive sport to watch. Maybe it's because I don't understand the grappling on the floor, but sometimes it's not easy to understand what's really going on when they are on the floor. In boxing if someone throws a decent punch, you'll know.

MMA is a mixture of boxing, karate, wrestling, ju jitsu so these athletes are the most skilled fighters in the world and it can't even be put in the same sentence as boxing because boxing is history now that UFC is here. Who would you guys have rather watched fight back in the day, a real live Bruce Lee fight or an Ali fight??? It's real simple folks, boxing is dead and UFC is here to stay. Mayweather can go blow don king for all i care. I wish he would step in the octagon with Torres since he likes to run his mouth so much. Torres would destroy him and i would LOVE to see that.

Ridiculous dribble. Boxing is not dead and anybody who thinks it is clearly doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground. Answer the OP question or take a hike. This is a boxing thread not a MMA fan bashing boxing thread. Does it bother you that much that there are people who like boxing? Why is that I wonder.

I'm well looking forward to Pacman/Cotto.

You think Coto would stand a chance against Pacman? I think it's unlikely myself.

As to the OPs question, I don't think there are any tour de force, dominating heavyweights on the horizon. I like the Klitchkos though myself, although I'm unsure of how to spell their last name. ;)

Actually it would bother me if it wasn't just a bunch of bs. Americans may have lost some interest in the heavyweight division but that's no big surprise. Americans seem to hate anything that doesn't involve Americans or anytime that Americans aren't at the top of something. A quick look at Ring Magazines top ten ranking in the heavyweight division makes it pretty apparent why Americans may have lost interest in it.

As selected by The Ring magazine in the March 2009 issue.
1. Wladimir Klitschko
2. Vitali Klitschko
3. Ruslan Chagaev
4. Alexander Povetkin
5. Nikolay Valuev
6. Sultan Ibragimov
7. Samuel Peter
8. Oleg Maskaev
9. Juan Carlos Gomez
10. Alexander Dimitrenko

As well as the pound for pound rankings:

1. Manny Pacquiao
2. Juan Manuel Marquez
3. Joe Calzaghe
4. Bernard Hopkins
5. Israel Vazquez
6. Antonio Margarito
7. Rafael Marquez
8. Miguel Angel Cotto
9. Ivan Calderon
10. Ricky Hatton

http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_2008

I'm surprised there aren't a lot more Americans who hate the best fighter in the UFC (GSP), because he's a Canadian after all.
