| 4 New Rules for the 2009-10 NFL Season Posted: 7/24/2009 3:42:05 AM | Here is a list of the 4 new rules approved by the NFL owners.
1)The initial force of a blindside block can't be delivered by a helmet, forearm or shoulder to an opponent's head or neck. An illegal blindside block will bring a 15-yard penalty.
2)Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty.
3)On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed. Again, it will be a 15-yard penalty.
On This rule I think the kickoff Receiving team won't have as good field position as of last year.
4)Also on kickoffs, the kicking team can't have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick. That will cost a team 5 yards.
I like this rule because the team that's ahead and getting the ball back say with under 2 minuites to play should win the game.
* Would like to hear other football fans opinions on these new rule changes.

Also on punt plays if the ball lands in bounds or not like the punted ball landing in bounds in the Cardinals / Eagles game last year that was recovered by the Cardinals but ruled out of bounds in the wild card game.

OK, I can agree with this rule. Although, I always thought blocking in the back was illegal, a blindside block must be different and something I"m not understanding. Still, I agree with it for the most part.
2)Initial contact to the head of a defenseless receiver also will draw a 15-yard penalty.
Again, another good rule that I like. It reminds me of a game I was watching a few years ago, Vikings vs. Rams, when a Vikings receiver had has head sandwiched by three Rams. I think, luckily, all he suffered was a broken jaw, but it was still kind of scary.
3)On kickoffs, no blocking wedge of more than two players will be allowed. Again, it will be a 15-yard penalty.
OK, I don't understand that point of this. It's kind of stupid to me and has no point. What do blocking wedges on kickoffs do to compromise the safety or give a team an unfair advantage? As long as their have been blocking wedges exercised by the receiving time, there has been a player on the kicking team designated as the wedge buster.
I do disagree that it means that receiving teams will not have as good of position. Now, instead of having 4 people building a wall aroundthe returner, they can all concentrate on blocking individually. I think you'll see better field positions overall.
4)Also on kickoffs, the kicking team can't have more than five players bunched together pursuing an onside kick. That will cost a team 5 yards.
Don't think this is a new rule. I think this was in place last year. Either way, I argue the same thing. It's not really a necessary rule.
Two out of four rules being on the positive side isn't bad.

I disagree with you on better field position. With No wedge and the receiving team concentrating on blocking individually will result in more holding calls and illegal blocks. We shall see.

With all sports there will be a learning curve until the players get use to the new rules. So sure there may be a lot more holding calls and illegal blocks, but only in the beginning. As the season goes on the calls will come down.
At least with this rule you may get the chance to see just how good the kick/ punt returners are without the "protective" wedge in front of them.
Should be an interesting season

I dont like this new rule...if onside kicks are parof the game, then the kicking team should line up as the wish.
no team should win...a team just wins or looses.
boring, why even have an on side kick.

A blindside block isn't thrown in the back. It's throwing a legal block on the guy that's too busy watching/chasing the ballcarrier to worry about what's actually in front of him (like a brick wall in the NFL). The defender never sees it coming. Usually you'll catch these on the ESPN highlights or Tom Jackson's "Jacked Up" segment. And as a former offensive lineman I can tell you they're pretty rare...and a lot of fun.
