| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 8:09:09 AM | | Finally, a beautiful thunder and lightning storm last night. I miss them so much from the plains of Manitoba that I am willing to pay to see one. Who loves thunder and Lightning and where and when in B.C. is the best place to experience them? | |

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 8:18:57 AM | I have lived in BC most of my life and although the storm last night was spectacular, I was still a little nervous and found it to be a tad bit un-nerving. I was happy when it was over and glad that our grass and trees got some well deserved water.
I have heard many, many times from people that lived in Alberta, Sask, & Manitoba, how much they loved the storms.
edit: and Quebec as well ......

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 8:38:28 AM | I have been here for 4 years and have never experienced a thunderstorm like this in the lower mainland. I loved it. The gods with an S are reminding us there is something greater out there. It truly is amazing to experience something so powerful | |

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 8:41:46 AM | we so needed the rain last night and it was indeed spectacular!!! was pleasantly surprised for nature's show to light up the sky and the deluge of rain received. We don't get thunderstorms on the coast due to being next to the oceans as opposed to the prairies where they are land locked. God, I miss the thunder and lightening storms. Similar to a good friend. Best places to see one ?? no idea. let me know when u find one! Probably in the interior. in the GVRD? maybe Belcarra park? | |

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 9:16:25 AM | | Last nights storm was awesome. The roar of the thunder, the sound of the rain...the amazing colours in the sky and the way the sunset glowed on the homes in my neigbourhood. I didn't see any lightning, which would be a good thing as everything here is tinder dry, just like the rest of our beautiful province. I can't remember the last time we had a good thunderstorm here on the lower island. | |

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 9:28:20 AM | I thought it was spectacular! I live on the eastern side of downtown Vancouver (in Gastown) and have an unobstructed rooftop view to the west. I don't love thunder it's the lightening I am drawn to. But, after a lifetime of storm watching (starting in Quebec) and the FEELING I get( I find the muggy darkness that comes before the thunder cracks pretty darn sensual) when I know the thunder means lightening is likely to follow soon. I love wondering where in the sky it will strike and trying to scan all the possibilities to catch a view of each strike. Some strikes were multi branched last night ( like white barren trees) and more elaborate and far reaching than I EVER remember seeing!
The pink , then amber, then deep purple glow that radiated from the entire sky and painted the city was reflected in the glass high rises to the southwest of me and it was like a scene from a science fiction movie, after a nuclear blast. Natures art! Sound, Image, Emotion ... nothing like it, imo.
My first memory of a thunderstorm, during the day, was when I was five, in Quebec. I was on my brothers shoulders as we walked through the forest at the back of our house on the army base. The booms started and I was terrified asking what they were. My brother, ever one for impressing me with tall tales, told me that they were the sounds of cowboys killing indians with cannons. Every time I heard that boom my picture making mind would see a slain indian and my heart would bleed. Years later, when I brought this up, my Dad told me that the forest was on the edge of the army's firing range (where he worked) and no one was shot at or hurt (only practise targets) and there were NO cannons, lol. Sometimes, it's awful what people can do to a kid's experience with a cavalier "pulling their leg" story.

It is good to have this reminder from time to time. If you have not experienced a thunder storm on the plains allow me to share the experience with you. Because the plains are flat you can see the storm clouds building for hours gathering, rising and finally forming the traditional anvil shape in the stratosphere. The birds and animals become noticably active eating as much as they can before the storm breaks. The sky above you is clear and bright but in the distance the clouds begin to change from a dazzling white to a dark grey to eventually a black purple. A quiet stillness developes and you began to hear the sound of soft rolling thunder in the distance. You look up and notice that the clouds are on the march and rapidly approaching. They are still a long way off but getting darker and angry . You began to notice flashes of lighting lighting up the clouds but not striking the earth yet. These features slowly but steadly become stronger and a wind may or may not pick up. You notice that there is not a bird or animal in sight. If there is no wind, things become very still and quiet and the natural lighting takes on a strange golden color . You began to feel a strange tickling feeling surround your body and the hair on your neck will stand up. This is an electrical charge in the air around you and you may smell the ozone in the air also. You now experience a feeling of excitement and anticipation. In some the feeling is fear and take shelter at this point. The thunder is now louder and the lightning is closer and may be striking the earth or running sideways across the sky. The wind may or may not begin to howl. The sky may darken so much tht you swear it is night. You feel the vibration from the thunder, the first rain drop, the storm is among us. Every one should experience this. It can make you feel VERY SMALL. This is how I remember the storms and enjoyed relating it for you. Brian

The lightning flashes were awesome in the literal sense, but the thunder ( or "Tunder" as the Newf behind me said) made me jump each time. I'm so not a Prairie chick.

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 10:07:32 AM | I was just about to say..and then read the OP...I love the good crackers we had in Winnipeg. The whole house would shake...especially cool if you were on a third floor attic room. Yesterdays was pretty good, no massive boomers though. a few "almosts but not quite there". | |

Thank you Brian….Your passion of the experience is seen in the detail of your recollections.
My home up north is in a valley surrounded by mountains and the vibrations of the thunder goes nowhere else but through your body. It surpasses the act of making love…lmao
I noticed the difference here in Vancouver where the lead up to the thunder strikes were not the same as what you describe and what I experienced yesterday - I think the euphoria and strength comes with the history of storms in our experiences. Just a thought….
Edit: When I was a little girl – my brothers’ interpretation of thunder was God dragging his bed around…lol

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 12:03:57 PM | I do, I do! .. and last night's was spectacular!
My place was quite hot and humid (and dark) all afternoon so I had all the windows and patio door open. The weight of the humidity, along with the hum of a fan in every room, and the rain pounding outside, made for a pretty intoxicating setting to begin with, but once the thunder and lightning started, it sent me right over the edge. I had never heard thunder THAT loud. And with each crash, I swear it got louder and closer. I was exhilarated!!
And then there was the amazing sunset. I was sitting in a dimly lit room when all of a sudden it seemed as though someone had turned a light on behind me. I looked over my shoulder and I noticed my dining area had been illuminated bright pink. I got up and looked out the window, and the entire sky was a brilliant orange and crimson red!! It looked like a fire on the horizon! It was incredible, to say the very least. ( I have a picture of it over on that other site)
Later on it was a little difficult to distinguish the difference between the sound of the fireworks coming from English Bay and thunder that was still crashing down all around. Mother Nature's Orchestra at it's best!
The only time I'd ever experienced anything so dramatic was at a movie theatre in Alberta. We were in the theatre watching the movie when all of a sudden the power went out. Almost immediately they announced we were in the midst of a blackout due to the severe lightning storm outside, and they assured us the movie would resume just as soon as the generators kicked in. Well instead of waiting for the movie to return, my friend and I left the theatre and went out to the lobby to watch the storm instead. The light show outside was definitely far more exciting than what was playing on the screen.

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 2:05:32 PM | That was spectacular last night.....................from what I saw on the news!
I only got the flashes and the sounds....we live at the back of a canyon...so I didn't see the strikes...the sky was sure red though. I loved how it lasted for like 2 hours.
I too have only experienced a big lightening storm once or twice before...the first time was as I laid in my bunk on a ViaRail train late at night as we were crossing Saskatchewan....the window faced South...and for hours we watched a lightening storm off in the distance in the US I think....it was so beautiful....too far to hear anything....and far enough not to be scared. It was like a dance of light each strike.
oh...yesterday.... I saw a dry strike at 4:30pm on a clear day...it was a good 3.5 hours before the storm was upon us....it was a magnificent bolt of light that came down about Mt Seymour.

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 2:30:07 PM | It was wonderful. I saw the fireworks and the storm. The storm was by far the better. It was nice to get a break from this drought and cool down before we go into this heat wave.
El Nino is back this winter and perhaps it is already playing with the weather. Because temperatures are warmer during El Nino years, this may pose some challenges to the Olympic organizers.
Regardless, last winter with all the snow was unusual and this summer is shaping up to be different.
Global Warming? Climate Change? El Nino? Natural Variations?
Still, the storm was spectacular and I hoping for a few more.

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 5:30:17 PM | | I love thunderstorms! It was so beautiful last night. It is the first time in a long time since we had a thunderstorm, here in Burnaby. It was so nice. I ran out to my car to put the windows back up! By the time I got back inside I was drenched. It felt so good. Within ten minutes, I found myself carrying on with my plans to go get a movie. I had a chance to drive in the rain. Another thing I really like to do! It was so peaceful. | |

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 6:40:06 PM | I loved it! I loved it! I loved it!
To the OP - Yes those prairie thunder storms were the best. I used to also see them in Edmonton.
|
| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/26/2009 7:40:01 PM | I'd give anything for a thunderstorm here, just as a change from the holy crap super hot! I loved them in the prairies...the only thing that I miss from living there | |

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/27/2009 12:05:41 AM | Yes cpo57 you are correct. Storms are beautiful and an exciting experience but they can be also deadly. There is nothing you can do if you are in the right place at the wrong time. I was coming back from Birds Hill Park out of Winnipeg on Hwy 59 on a beautiful hot sunny day in my jeep yj with the top down and the doors removed when a sudden thunder storm hit us.( My wife at the time was with me ) The wind began to howl and golf ball sized hail stones rained down upon us. We had no protection and the only thing I could was cover my wifes body with mine to protect her. When we finally drove into Winnipeg supermarket windows were smashed by the hail, the wind had torn roofing off buildings and lightning had struck hydro poles and trees. On another trip from Grand Forks N.D. to winnipeg, (with the same wife) A huge black cloud shooting lightning bolts and hail followed us only about 50 feet above us. We were on my Super Glide and we had to ride like hell till we found an overpass to hide under. Another time I took my( same wife ) camping in a canyon (old open pit mine) in New Mexico and during a major thunder storm the lighting began striking all around us. It was attracted to the minerals in this abandoned open pit mine we were in. Hey! Now I know why my wife left! hehehehehe. All joking aside cpo57 I hope the people who were admitted to your hospital are ok. | |

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/27/2009 12:53:38 AM | I've allways enjoyed thunderstorms with lightning. Its mother way to snap pictures in the sky after she has moved her furniture.
What a great way to spend the evening and watching our skies create a show.

| Who Loves Thunder storms? Posted: 7/27/2009 1:20:23 AM | Being originally from the maritimes..wow..the big storm was something to see!!!! What was most amazing was the sky here on the island just before the lightening started up...it was yellow, pink orange, purple and then coming over the island out came this beautiful Rainbow..now if that isn't spectacular I dont' know what is
On the east coast we had wild storms in the summer and the humidity was unbearable and you couldnt' wait for the thunder and the lightening to shake the whole house. My grandma use to tell us kids that when it thundered that God was bowling and got another strike!!! That always made me smile
