| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/26/2009 5:32:34 PM | My bud of mine who I had not talked to about a year ago because of our differences, anyhow she e-mailed she e-mailed that she was at the social and is ok but devastated. My jaw dropped in shock as I didn't know anything about it until I just opened my e-mail. Even her and I got in a fight I would of been hurting if she was a victim in the crossfire.
Things are getting very crazy in the last few years in the city and I happen to live by the core. Right now I am thinking of seriously moving of moving into the south or west of polo park or out the city all together. Even though I so believe in revitalizing our downtown and bettering this city I am think Enough is enough already.

I didn't read anywhere that the gunman made off with any cash, but is still at large.

No point in movin' as that just means you cede that part of the city over to the scumbags and that is no way to defeat them. Aside from that there is no safe place to go. I'm 100 miles away from the city and the police in the local towns seem to have growing numbers of drug and weapons confiscations. The landscape is changing and not for the better. The more people move out here the more problems we have, including gangs and basically anything you have in there only the scale is smaller. It may be more devastating to us because that kind of thing is supposed to be a city problem but we'll learn to deal with it. I've thought about bettering that city too but all my scenarios end with me in big trouble. Stay put, get tough on the politicians and they in turn will have to get tough on the crimminals and clean things up. For the lefties who think getting tough won't work, think about why they don't steal from one another in prisons and how their system works for them.

If & when they catch the gunman, I'd like to know if the firearm he used was registered ( I'd bet it wasn't, which should show that the gun registry is a waste of time & money).

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/26/2009 11:41:00 PM | Well its good to see things are carrying on in good old Winnipeg.
My life is so much more quiet and peacefull!
So now what will the traditional Manitoba Social look like from now on. -cheap hall -cheap DJ -Chinese Auction -11 p.m. lunch of coobie and city rye bread and cheese. -radar scanner at the door -bullet proof vests for the lucky couple
I find out today, the Bombers are bringing in Bishop (they would do much better with an 80 year old Pope) and now one of the most sacred of Manitoba traditions has THIS happen!
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD HAS THE WORLD GONE MAD!!!
Oh ya! I forgot that it really had... starting around 1914 when it ok'd World War I.

I'd say it went mad when we started worrying more about the criminals & their rights than about the victims of crime. Once they're found guilty, prison should be punishment, not rehab.
|
| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/27/2009 12:01:44 PM | | I think that prison should include intensive rehab programs!! Think about it, some of the violent criminals can and do get out after their time. And the non-violent ones learn violence in the prisons. So here we got a load full of very violent and angry "non-rehabilitated" people coming out into society. The next thing.........guess! No don't guess.......just check out the backgrounds of those people who are out there killing, robbing and maiming...... | |

For first time offenders sure, but if they are repeat offenders the legal system should say "OK we tried to rehabilitate you, that didn't work. Now we're going to punish you."
By punishment I don't mean beatings & torture, I mean make prison ( for repeat offenders) something they'd want to work to avoid- - - no TV ( but have books available). A 5 year sentence? You'll be spending 5 years ( not 2/3 of 5 years) in your cell, unless you become ill & have to go to the prison hospital. No getting a university or college degree paid for by the taxpayers.
just check out the backgrounds of those people who are out there killing, robbing and maiming......
Yes, because they don't face serious punishment for their actions. You kill someone? You should be executed. Statistics may show that having the death penalty doesn't lower the # of homicides commited, but no executed killer has ever re-offended. And as they are a killer, why spend the thousands each year to keep them imprisoned?

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/27/2009 12:31:00 PM | It is a shame that private parties such as socials are being robbed. I was a bridesmaid at a wedding where the father of the bride was assulted and robbed while the wedding gifts were being loaded into his vehicle, and his wallet and the presentation money were stolen from him, near the end of the wedding. The happy father of the bride spent the night in emergency and it certainly ruined the event for everyone, including the happy couple.
Rehab is the same as AA...................if the person on the receiving end is not interested then all the work and good intentions are a waste. I'm all for rehab and giving a criminal 2 chances at rehab. Then I still like the strike 3 rule and bringing back the death penalty - now that would work because the criminals would not have the opportunity to have "rap sheets" the length ofa persons arm. If an automatic death sentance was given out for someone who took anothers life in violence, or anyone involved in an armed robbery - I think you would see fewer criminal willing to take that chance.
Fewer criminals would eliminate the overcrowding problem in jails, and that would lessen the judicial burden and reduce the time for trials. The money saved could go to putting more police on the streets and helping other social programs that provide assistance to law abiding citizens.

Maybe 2 chances if their crime didn't involve any injuries.

Dunno about a death sentence if involved in an armed robbery... maybe an automatic 10 year sentence if involved ( 10 years, no early release for any reason), 20 years if someone is injured ( also no early release), and the death penalty if someone dies.

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/27/2009 3:51:48 PM | | how about once they are on 3 strikes or for man slaughter they get sent to work in the army (millitary land forces) and given the job to dig trenches and find land mines with no way to be reintroduced back to society. This should start taming the idiots. Tax would put our tax dollars at work. | |

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/27/2009 3:55:56 PM | | I mentioned to my friend who told me she was there that she should seek counseling, but she said she will be fine without it. To each there own I guess, but I don't anyone can truly get over that. | |

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/27/2009 7:40:13 PM | Susan CD - armed robery is a criminal committing a crime with a weapon that has the potential to kill another person. Why allow criminals to be kept for 10 or 20 years on our tax dollar. In my mind, anyone committing an armed robbery has the opportunity or decision to use that gun, so why sugar coat it, its premeditated and should be severely dealt with. It does not take a brave or couragous person to wave a gun at someone who is unarmed. So, I think some criminals would think twice about it. Many criminals offend because the system is soft and they are not in any real danger.
Take drunk driving - the numbers went down once bread and butter licences were done away with. Granted, it has not solved the problems but the numbers are much lower. The young offenders stealing cars create more accidents and damage than drunks.
Time for the justice system to step things up.
|
| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/27/2009 7:56:47 PM | And yet ANOTHER reason to be happy I don't live in Winnipeg. The only social I see guns at in the sticks, is the one attached to our annual hunting competition!!
You guys buy flaq jackets yet?

committing a crime with a weapon that has the potential to kill another person
But he/she didn't kill another person. But you also mentioned drunk drivers, if they cause the death of another person while driving impaired, that should be considered murder, and they should be punished accordingly ( if they're caught impaired but haven't killed anyone, they should be given a lifetime driving ban.
Maybe we should do what they do in Ireland; if you're caught DUI the vehicle you're driving ( whether it's yours, a friend's or a rental) gets taken to the scrap yard & turned into a cube.
Justice system? We have a legal system, not a justice system.

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/29/2009 8:46:59 PM | OMG I just found out that the couple shot were friends of a friend. I had actually met them just a few weeks before the incident!! And my friend was supposed to go to that social with them, but was too sick to attend!! He is at this moment offering comfort and support for the guy who survived....and helping make funeral plans for his girlfriend. Soooo sad!
I have three sons who are 20,21 & 26. All three have had very serious incidents happen to them on the streets of Winnipeg.....and all three have very serious scars from it both physically and mentally. I am blessed to still have these boys with me today!! Gone are the dayz when differences were dealt with by talking or even just fisty cuffs......now its guns, chains, knives and machettes. And the danger isn't just in the back lanes and seedy areas anymore either.....it happens in broad daylight....down town...in front of crowds of people!!
I think its time to arm ourselves with self-defense maneauvers......and a can of pepper spray....and any other solid object that can hurt em enough to escape. I always make a point of locking my car doors when I drive. I had an incident years ago when a guy was crossing the street in front of me......as he passed the car he made a dive for the driver's side door...they were locked.....I drove away at top speed!!!
Stay safe out there people.......and don't ever think it can't happen to you or those you love!!

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/30/2009 7:55:08 AM | is a very sad day agreed mr karma,
however when gang members attend your social you have to wonder how much could have been avoided had anyone recognized the danger of associating with family or friends(on the backs of those who attended with gang association).....when the gang member pretends to be a community supporter they simply draw heat to anyone they imbed with....how very sad to all those people who where terrorized by gang activity. i guess grandma was right when she said...your only as good as the people you associate with...is very tragic but not a surprise to me.
trouble is the general public allows gang members to associate with them and does not realize the heatscore draws terrorist conduct to them. sad but true! puppet gang needs family to hide in. NOW this family understands what associations to criminals costs.....your life in some cases....sad but true...and you wonder why the government closes the door on business who serve booze without security or they get no licence and or booze with no metal detectors nor proffesional bouncers.(those days of puclic safety are clearly over just takes humans a lot of lessons to believe it) guess socials are the same as taking a bus..........REMINDER.1 year today and remember Tim at the Leg at 8:00.
sorry for your loss wolf woman is very sad that a 50 year old lady was murdered infront of her friends and family. what a tragic story this is indeed.

| Gun blazing at a North end wedding social. Posted: 7/30/2009 8:25:44 AM | To me wedding social are just greedy money grabbing events and have no good to them except to party.
When I got married my father footed the bill for the reception as the father of the bride. My partner and I were responsible to set up our own home, which was an apartment. We bought our own furniture, dishes, bedding etc. We got only what we got as wedding gifts.
We did not have a community set up our home nor provide a down pmt on a home. Our guest also did not pay for our honeymoon. If you could not afford one you did not go on one. If you could not afford a wedding you went to the justice of the peace and if you could not afford that then what the he.ll were you doing getting married. Manitoba is the only province that hosts these greedy events. I adhore them for weddings. Social are great for raising money for important issues like helping someone in dire straights. An event not organized or event started by the person who is to be the one receiving the help. Then it is not done for greed but for what it was intended for.
Wedding social are just that a reason to make money to enable the benefactor to purchase a home, pay for whole wedding, pay for extravagant honeymoons and they make these socials open for everyone wither you know the Bride and Groom or not. So yes even the criminal element could come because there is no discrimination and no care taken who attended. The point of the social is to make money either through the prizes or booze.
That does not mean in any way that it is ok for someone to come in and commit hairy carry..... There needs to be a total revamping of attitudes. I attended only a couple and did not really enjoy them all that much except for one. I know I will here flack on what I said. But that is how I see wedding socials and will not attend another unless I know the Bride and Groom well, even then it will be questionable.
This seems to be the new way of life folks the innocent are the minority. There seems to be more criminal elements than not.......
keep safe folks | |

However, what about our right to protection, personally I would never carry a conceled weapon perhaps in full view hehehe
Criminals and the insane have alllllll the rights .. right next to kids and law abiding honest citizen have zilch..... Go Canada

Unless they changed the laws, you can carry pepper spray ( small clyindrs, not the big cans used to repel bears) if you're carrying it to potect yourself from stray dogs, or to protect your dog from other animals. If the police find it on you, and you say it's for self defence ( ie, you carry it to use against muggers, purse snatchers, etc then it's illegal). Hairspray isn't illegal to carry in your purse, and disposable lighters are readily available; use your imagination.
In any event, if I were attacked by someone with a knife & use pepper spray on them and are able to stop them, I'd prefer facing charges of carrying a concealed weapon from the police over hoping I survived the attack so I can give police a description of the attacker.
Btw, if anyone's interested, send a message to me here & I'll forward the web address of a place in the US that offers mock cell phones ( they look like cell phones, but are actually the contact tasers ( not the tasers that fire wires) and are inexpensive. Seems to me a lot of people walk around with cell phones in their hands .
They also sell pepperspray that looks like lipstick ( only 5 bursts of spray per tube).
These are probably illegal in Canada, so be warned ( don't forget, we aren't allowed to protect ourselves in this great country, we may actually injure a criminal, and THEY have rights. We're supposed to leave our protection to the police ( but when I tell them I'm going downtown in the evening & want a police escort, I never get one).

I would think if the average person were allowed to carry a weapon for self defence that you might get some unscrupulous criminals that would probably carry the same device also 'for self defence'. And it would be perfectly legal fore them to have it. Some lawyer might even say their use of the device was only for self defence as the victim was behaving in a threatening manner.
Besides, my .45 would leave too big a bulge in my pocket.
