COME OUT FOR A GREAT HIKE!!

Interested in a good work out but find the Grouse Grind too busy? Why not try the BCMC Trail instead? It's a less crowded and slightly longer alternative to Grouse Grind.

While not quite as intense as the Grind...don't kid yourself...it ain't easy!! It's still a hike up a mountain and it's steep!

Street address for Grouse Mtn is 6400 Nancy Greene Way, North Vancouver

WHEN: Sunday August 23, 2009

Meet Time: 1:30pm for introductions

Start Time: 1:45pm, departure from the Grouse Grind Gate.

End Time: However long it takes us, who's rushing?

Wind Up: At the coffee bar at the top

This trail is a slightly longer route to the Grouse Chalet, and has far less traffic. Scenery is similar, but the upper reaches of the trail cross through some old growth forest. As with all trails up Grouse, IT'S A STEEP TRACK and a good workout, and the usual cautions apply.

Hiking up the BCMC is normally a weekly Sunday event though it will only be hosted twice in August. If you're curious to know if the hike is going ahead on a particular week-end please email me and I'll confirm.

All levels of fitness are welcome. That being said...know your limitations and don't be afraid to voice them! If you need to stop and take a break, speak up.

Anyone who would like to join us should be at the gate to the Grind between 1:30pm and 1:45pm to allow for introductions and a departure time from the gate no later than 1:45pm. Unless it's pouring buckets this event will proceed as scheduled.

This trail is relatively well marked but it is quite easy to get lost if you're not paying attention. Until you're very familiar with this trail I highly recommend sticking with the group. We will take as many breaks as you need to catch your breath.

You will need to wear a good pair of runners or hikers or similar sturdy shoe. Shorts, track pants or yoga pants will do. DO NOT WEAR JEANS. Wear layers (i.e. a tank top with a long sleeved shirt) so that you can remove a layer once you start to get warm. There is still some snow at the top and it can get cool. Given that we'll be going up in the afternoon you probably won't want to bring a jacket, but you may want to change out of your sweaty clothes. Trust me...you will get sweaty.

I also recommend bringing a water bottle filled with water or a sport drink. It's very important to be well hydrated for this hike. You'll need to drink lots of water the night before and the morning of the hike, as well as bring lots of water with you.

You may also wish to bring a power bar or a piece of fruit, something to snack on along the way.

It's also a good idea to bring some bug spray. Lots of bug spray...

You can check a change of clothing in at baggage check in Customer Service for $5.
Alternatively, you can carry a backpack up yourself. Due to snowmelt, it is quite wet near the top, and there will be a small stream to walk through. You may wish to bring a change of footwear in case your runners/hikers get wet.

Feel free to join us, but please sign up so we know who to expect and keep an eye out for you. This is a great opportunity to make new friends who want to get/stay in shape!

Public Transit:
The public transit system offers regular service to the base of Grouse Mountain every half hour. Catch Bus 232 from Phibbs Exchange or Bus 236 from Lonsdale Quay. For more details, visit the Translink website: http://tripplanning.translink.bc.ca/

Once you reach the chalet, you can hike back down or take the Grouse Mountain Skyride for a fee of $5.00 dollars.

I think that covers everything, but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me!

Looking forward to sweatin' with y'all!!

I may change this hike from doing the BCMC to doing the Baden Powell instead...A wee bit easier, and much more scenic and pretty.

It starts the same place as the Grind and the BCMC.

Thoughts?

"More scenic" seems to be a just reward for the effort, but I haven't done either of those trails.

Thanks for organizing.

That sounds great! I haven't done either of those trails and most likely will be happiest with the least difficult for my first try.

I haven't decided yet...but I'm leaning towards the Baden Powell.

Many first timers that have come out for the BCMC have found it far more difficult than they anticipated.

Hi there...this will be my first time at the BCMC also, so perhaps the Baden Powell will be the better route to start with; having said that, I've done the Grouse Grind recently so I've a good idea what to expect!
See you Sunday,
Neil

Too bad SFG, perhaps we'll see you another time.

Okay, this hike WILL be the Baden Powell and we'll go as far as Skyline Drive. This should roughly take 2.5 hours, but will be a far easier hike than the BCMC.

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow at 1:30pm! Meeting place is still the same, the gate to the Grind.
