| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 4:10:22 AM | | I prefer roses for sentimental reasons. When I'm give a roses I will usually take one from the bunch and press it to preserve it. I think its very sweet and romantic. A single rose can last your whole relationship whether its 1 week or 60 years. Chocolate on the other hand, while yummy and still a sweet sentiment, only lasts a little while before its gone. | |

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 4:12:37 AM | We prefer you to do something because you WANT TO.. Not because you want to work out which may impress us more so it doesn't actually have to be either.....
And, later when you've been together for ages and you continue to send or buy something, yep it doesn't stop at first date, or firth or until you get some, it continues, then you better know her favourite colour, flower, chocolates, sexual position, attitude, turn offs, turn ons, when to do the dishes, take the garbage out, run her bath, did I mention whilst she gives her all, cooks your meals, shops, laughs, tickles you, gives you a great sexual life, loves you?
lol
Ahh why the not, couldn't help myself.
But seriously my first line is my answer...........::

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 4:12:56 AM | no doubt roses. lovely fragrant ones. mmmm, yes. no explanation needed. just roses.... | |
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 4:16:15 AM | What's the occasion?
Neither really float my boat. I really like it when someone gets to know me well enough to know what my tastes are and what I prefer.

it was a general question who's to say i wouldn't buy them because it would put a smile on your face
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 4:31:25 AM | It twas, but it twas a genuine answer...
Buy what lol? You inferring you would steal them ? Yep, flowers and / or chocolates may do that but it may not, if you ie) knew her hobby, you could buy something of equal value no? And really put that smile on her face.
Flowers / Chocolates - can also to "some" not all, mean mmmm so he is "trying me on" it's easy to spend $12 or $40.... if your successful.
OMG............ na I am not a cynic but it's also the oldest know "trick" in the book.
Mean't in the nicest possible way.

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 4:36:22 AM | I think a single rose...It's not over the top...but the sentiment and thought is there.
Now if you really want to really get to me, buy me a Gardenia...it's my favorite
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 4:37:23 AM | aaawwww i couldn't possibly write down every hobby so i picked just two things ramdonly if i had been dating a girl for a while then i would definately know what to get her to make her smile (i would hope...) | |

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 5:12:27 AM | | Lots of good answers. I guy I had dated a couple of times knew my kitchen was done in an Italian country theme....he brought me 3 small sunflowers and they were on the kitchen table for a long time. He took the time to find out something about me and made the effort to make the gift fit. A single flower or a flower different from a rose does it for me. I won't turn down DARK chocolate but like most women, always trying to watch the calories. | |
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 5:22:56 AM | The only time I like Chocolate is if I am tasting it off the lips of the man I adore. As far as roses go...not big on the cut. I prefer them in a garden. I don't really wear jewelry and I prefer my own cooking to eating out...so geesh, I am trying to think of what a guy could buy me...oh I know
If he could....he could buy me a star

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 5:45:41 AM | | Neither. I have all of the material possessions I need. The best gift a man has ever given me is the gift of his time...a walk together, holding hands, watching a movie, listening to some music... | |

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 6:05:06 AM | I think it's sweet to give a woman one single rose, and not a whole dozen (especially on a first date). A dozen roses can be intimidating, and lead to a woman feeling that she is being manipulated, or "bought" on a first date.
Chocolate for a first date would depend on whether you were picking her up, or she was meeting you someplace. If you're picking her up, then chocolate is a sweet reminder of you when she gets home after the date. It should be really good chocolate, or why bother? If you're meeting her don't buy her chocolate, what would she do with it for the duration of the date? It sucks when guys do this to you, and you're carrying a box around all night...lol.
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 6:06:03 AM | Roses or any other flowers please! As a type 1 diabetic, if you bring me chocolates, I'll assume you're trying to kill me, LOL Beth | |
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 6:59:30 AM | someone who really 'gets me' would bring me neither.
I can buy whatever I want, so it's not a monetary thing. To me it's about the thought. The fact that he really thought about me. And roses or chocolate are so conventional, that they almost require no thought. They're the fall-back-option. The obvious. I like the 'not so obvious'. The blue wildflower, picked from the side of the road, because they remind him of the color of my eyes, the message on the bathroom mirror that only shows up after a steamy shower, the note left under the windshield wiper of my car. That's the kind of stuff that gets my attention.
I'm also the type that will insist on a $ 10 limit for christmas presents and that they have to be spent at a Dollar store. So, that we can each pick out 10 things that have some kind of connection to the other person. And then we'd spend time unpacking each and telling each other why we chose a particular item for them, what it reminds us of, what we think it symbolizes

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 7:07:24 AM | | Either would be nice, though my preference would be a rose or any flowers at all. No-one has bought me flowers in a year! Potential dates take note; it would award you huge bonus points… | |
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 7:19:42 AM | | Carnations smell better and last much longer than roses. | |
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 7:26:00 AM | Flowers are always appreciated. I'm a dark chocolate girl myself - wouldn't be impressed by milk chocolate and since you might not know...flowers are more of a sure thing.
Reminds me of that old saying: Candy is dandy but liquor is quicker.
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 7:33:55 AM | Neither. Both. Either. It's the thought behind it that matters to me.
Last week I was driving to the store and came upon a fave little area along my route. Black-eyed Susans grow wild there, one of my favorite flowers. On this particular day there was a car pulled to the side of the road and a man walking through the flowers gathering a huge bouquet.
I imagined he just happened by, noticed the flowers, thought of his special someone and took the time to stop. It was very touching.
That's what I prefer. | |

| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 7:38:01 AM | For me a far more meaningful and personal gift would be a book, a piece of art work - which can be something as simple as a photo or a small piece, candles, lotions or scents are always nice as well. Music is also COOL!
I really would prefer to NEVER receive something as ordinary and mundane as chocolates or roses. Blah.
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 7:58:32 AM | I prefer roses over chocolate. Big flower fan but not a lover of chocolate. Don't know what people see in it, it does nothing for me.
If a guy really wants to know, I love blooming plants, especially rare ones like "Bird of Paradise" or "Lily". I also like fragrant ones but they usually are not cut, they stay as a plant or bush.

I could say the same for me, but OP didn't ask that question!
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 8:06:13 AM | | I prefer a homemade gift such as a home cooked meal or a poem or a song written for me. It's more heartfelt and personal :) | |
|
| Roses or chocolates? Posted: 8/1/2009 8:27:35 AM | Never chocolate unless it's for food sex (don't forget the fruit and whipped cream) or making s'mores 'cause you're hanging out with her in front of a fire. Never cut flowers as potted plants last forever, or at least for a long time. If the later, choose a cool pot, too. Never just leave the store foil on it. Never diamonds 'cause we all saw 'Blood Diamonds'.
The best spontaneous gift I EVER received was a compilation tape (I'm dating myself, I know) called "The No Sleep Tape" meaning he stayed up all night making it and we could stay up all night using it as background music. The music he chose was some of his favs but mostly it demonstrated that he was trying to 'get' me. Very cool.
It strikes me as I read through this thread that no wonder guys have such a hard time figuring us out: no 2 of us are the same in our preferences!
Good luck with the girl!
