Has the Economy affected you?

I was wondering if anyone are having problems dating due to the Economy losing their homes, jobs, etc. Many people lowering their social class and being snubbed by those who thinks this will never happen to them? What is happening now could happen to anyone, any class. I hate it when someone thinks they are better than someone else without actually knowing the person. Luckily, I have managed to keep a job through this trying times but it has not been easy going through a divorce. I have downsized and only go out occasionally, watch more movies at home, eat out less (better for me anyway).
A few years ago I went out with a man that told me I didn't make enough money? At the time, my car was older but I had my bills paid and raising three teenagers without child support, I think I did pretty well considering.
I went through depression because of the divorce this past year and the Economy but I realized I can only do so much and try to keep a positive attitude and finally things are starting to turn around slowly. I hope my life will continue to improve gradually and I hope people learn from this to make sure this does not happen again for the future.

My gf got laid off last November. That means she lost her insurance. Then I got a pay cut. Ouch. Then she got diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Then I got another pay cut. The place she works offered her job back, but now she can't take it because she can heartily move for a week, and she would lose her State coverage.

Hey, we drink a lot of lemonade.

Up here in Edmonton Alberta Canada everybody got hit hard as well, plant's closed, lay offs ect, people watching their cash bigtime...as to dating....

I was alway's a one in the mindset of it's the quality of a date not the amount spent. I have spent a ton of cash and have had the crappyest time of my life and some of the best I can remember are simply 2 people out doing whatever and enjoying the day.

If someone is looking at you because of the amount of cash you make personally TO THE CURB. I'd rather live happy with someone in a box down by the river then in a mansion in misery. That's just me though.

Not much but then again I have only had a few dates in the past 6 months. As of today due to some wonderful news I received that will have a big impact on my finances, I am putting dating on hold. I just have more important things to worry about right now than navigating the pond.

I believe the economy has a great deal to do with social activities. I have been downsized to a minimum pay job and paying bills is at best a struggle. On top of that I lost 70,000.00 to a fraudulant mortgage broker. I have bad days but overall I am still thankful for waking up and the ability to walk alone to the bathroom. I have to admit that when I read a mans profile and he states he is looking for a financially secure, independent woman I feel second classed. I owned a business, raised 5 kids, bought a new car, owned my own home and had a good financial portfolio until the economy forced my hand. As a single older woman who would love to travel, eat out everyday and take time off when the moment feels right (grin), I don't date as often as I'd like. I do think men as well as woman are having difficulty paying for a night out.
I do pay for my own meals and activities on first meets and will tell a potential date in hopes that maybe he will ask me out and not feel obligated to pay should he also be struggling with bills. I tend to look for free activites that allow us to take our minds off the bill. I ask myself many times "what do I have to offer" but hope that a potential mate isn't measuring my equity against the size of my heart. My heart is rich, my bank account is poor. The economy has effected everyone in some way. Unfortunately it took more "lives" than prisoners. I believe love is the answer. We all need to show a bit more of it to our neighbors, friends and the stranger on the street.

There are plenty of homeless women you could date. I don't think I could live happily with anyone in a box down by the river ... but would be quite happy living in a mansion with all the trappings of wealth. Riverfront property has never been appealing. That's just me though.

My heart is rich, my bank account is poor

A rich heart doesn't pay the monthly bills and keep the creditors at bay. A healthy bank account does wonders for everything from creature comforts to a sense of serenity in this tumultuous economy.

I missed out on a potentially great relationship this past March. I met a woman off of POF and we hit it off via phone, pof mail and the two dates we had. I made it clear that my contractual work was not consistent, i.e not steadily employed. So after the second date she felt that maybe we should "wait" until the job situation gets better. So I feel snubbed. Because someone is going through rough un-employment or funds are low, doesn't mean 2 people still couldn't go out and date. So I personally don't have a problem dating women who are having a rough time with work, as long as they prioritize. It's been a rough year and I'm sure even longer for a lot of people.

OP

We all got hit in one way or another. Smaller and smaller operating budgets make people panic and they act like lobsters in a pot of boiling water -- those that are managing to claw their way to the top are being dragged down by those that are boiling -- not a pleasant experience for anybody. Worse yet, the "leadership" is acting like loonatics in an asylum.

I have several friends who have lost their jobs. What counts is that these people are not "quitters" and I have every confidence that they will "be at the helm" again. It may take longer for some than for others, depending on their skill sets but that should not be a reflection of who they truly are. What is truly amazing is the fact that some of the people who are going through rough times are doing it with grace and integrity that I had not seen in them before. If anything, it only causes me to admire them that much more.

yes it has, Im a carpenter, handy man guy and work for a very small construction outfit, I got divorced last sept,[ third divorce] and could no longer afford to rent my house that I lived in for ten years.I have joint custody of my teenage daughter and I had to move in with my second ex and my daughter,my ex was having money problems as well so Im sharing all the expense,s of living in a townhouse with them, rather then paying child support, at least I have a place to sleep[have my own bedroom].Because I live from pay check to pay check and dont always get paid till some projects are finished, dating is out of the question, plus the fact im living with an ex makes dating awkward, Ive had to explain the situation and some of the gals Ive tried to date dont like my living arrangement but at least im around my daughter more often.

It's affected me a little. My investments took a hit and I got a 0% raise in 2009.

But it hasn't been all bad... the slowdown in the economy caused a big drop in interest rates... so now I'm paying my mortgage down faster. If interest rates stay this low, my 25 year mortgage will get paid off in 15-16 years.

I'm also spending less on gasoline for my car.

So while it affected me a bit, I'm not getting hit anywhere near as bad as others.

Hopefully things will turn around I know that times are tough and I kind of look at it as a challenge to see what I can create on my own more than buy.

I work in the healthcare fieldPT and go to school but I am also on call for people who want to take vacations and such. My on call opportunities have not been as great as I would have liked them to be this summer due to the fact that people are not taking vacations. Once school starts I will be working pt for the school also so that is a plus.

When things were good I payed stuff off in preparation for my rainy days so as a result I am not doing too bad but have not taken a vacation yet this summer either.

I don't think the economy has affected my dating life per say, but let's just say right now isn't the best time to be coming out of college and looking for a job. Now that I think about it....maybe I could have been having one of those secret office romances so maybe it IS affecting my dating life!

I guess I am fortunate, my income went up last year, while I cut my expenses.

While I was dating someone for most of the recession, I've noticed that I do get more interest from women. While I am NOT a believer that most women are gold diggers, I guess that me not losing my confidence or become a downer in this bleak time does appeal to women.

Thank you Karma, for your thoughts and your prayers. It is tough but I am still thinking in positive terms. For instance, I had to work over the weekend on a Sales Drive and one of the people there, who's work had been cut down by two days, heard that my gf was having Chemo on Tuesday. So I explained how it went. That because they shot you with Steroids you are great the first day but then the crash is atrocious to where you can't do a thing for like 24 hours straight. Then out of the blue she called me, which took some effort, since she doesn't have my phone number. She then offered to take the kids on that day that she no longer works and take care of them. It is awesome that in times like this, and as intense as things can get, people can give so much of themselves. It gives you hope in people. So thanks Karma.

Guess what? It's only getting worse from here on out. Ever read Atlas Shrugged? Yeah, the American economy is heading into a very predictable death spiral.

I mean really, does it get any more communist than "Cash for Clunkers"?

This country is already bankrupt. If you're like me, you already have a year long food supply, ammo, and gold and silver.

remove money from your bank and melt your credit cards.

bring back bartering and only pay with cash. use your bank for minor things only.

let the whole 'economy' fail, when you have nothing..you have nothing to lose.

own your home/car/etc...you're still poor!

I'm in advertising, and business sucks right now. My income has been cut in half, and my daughter is starting college in a week. My finances are really tight right now, and my bills are barely being covered, so any dating expenses are being covered by my beloved boyfriend. Thank the Lord his job has not been affected, and he makes a good salary. I don't ever ask for anything from him, I am not like that. But he is very generous and our relationship is not material based, so although right now I can't pay for a lot of the things we do together, I do my best to pull my weight by doing special things for him to make sure he knows how much I appreciate him.
When the market changes, and I am making more money, I'll be able to contribute monetarily more, but right now while my money is tight, I'll have to do my best to show my appreciation in other ways.

The economy has affected me, and it defintely has affected everyone I've met. Pretty much everyone I have met from here has taken some hit, made some adjustment to this economic downturn. But misery loves company, right? Count your blessings, I say...

I give that my ignorant statement of the month award. I guess you're one of these people who think we've had free markets under central banking - the fifth plank of the communist manifesto. Turn off Bill Maher and do some reading.

If a man tells you you don't make enough money because of the car you drive....
You just might have more money than him.

Its called fiscal responsibility.
Unless you are a millionaire, you shouldn't be driving a fancy car.
