Musicians: what's hot and what's not
Posted: 8/5/2009 4:19:17 PM
A lot of girls seem to go for musicians, but it seems that some kinds of musicians get a lot more female attention than others. My question is "what's sexy and what's not"? Is it sexy to play guitar regardless of what you play? We all know that girls swoon over acoustic stuff, but what about metal or shred or other aggressive types of music?

I play guitar and I'm wondering if my passion for metal and playing fast is hurting my cause, if it's turning girls on, or if genre is not really relevant.

Thanks.

So from the last sentence, I'm getting the impression that you only play the geetarrrh to be a chick magnet?

I thought it would have been for the love of music , the love of the craft.

Your post will be seen on your profile and just might hurt your cause even more now.

Oh boy. That wasn't my intention at all! You're going to believe what you want about me or my motives, but that's not why I play. I wish it worked out that way, but it hasn't so far!

What I meant was more along the lines of "how do I use my guitar playing to my advantage?"

Generally speaking; famous = hot. Not famous = no interest.

I play the harmonica and the drums.

I also play a mean triangle and am quite inventive on the kazoo, but those don't seem to impress too many women.

C'mon, if you're a musician or an artist of any kind you know better than that! It's not the kind of music, either it's YOUR music or it is not your music. It's not all about the technical skill or the kind of instrument you play. I mean, you have to be decent at what you do, but still...

I was in love with a jazz musician while I had no knowledge or understanding of jazz. His music just spoke to me, nothing I could do. Not that like i liked jazz otherwise in any other shape or form. He taught me to counciously understand it though. And when i had a chance to be at the really good jazz conecerts I had enough knowledge to understand... But to "understand" or "appreciate" is not the same as to be "totally absorbed"

A dancer myself, I've observed guys fall for my dancing. I've fallen for just one dancer myself, and pretty hard at that. And I totally disagree with the "famous vs not famous" thing.

Think of it as just another language. If you speak it and she understand and likes what you say - it's good.

Ok... I'll be honest. You're wondering , OP why you aren't getting the chicks even though you are a musician..

I looked at your profile and saw a young (handsome) man who is balding, and wears glasses.

It's wrong, really... to say this but in keeping in context of the thread, you don't look the part.

You look more like an accountant.

So if you want your music skills to attract the ladies, you need a makeover.

Shallow as it sounds... but I guess that would be the case. *sigh*

Browngreeneyes: I've actually wondered that before...whether my behavior/interests fit my appearance. I apparently look like a dork, but I don't feel like one, nor do I identify as one...but maybe if people INTERPRET me as a dork...I should play up my visual features? I guess I could either change my appearance, or change those skills/interests/qualities that I put emphasis on?

It's not shallow, what you said. It's realistic. I'm a no-bullsh!t type of guy.

Ok I'm glad you didn't take offence to that OP.

You actually are very handsome but the glasses.. well, they dominate your face. First thing I saw in your profile pics were those glasses.

You can tell me to shutup but I envisioned you with a shaved head (seeing as you're balding) and funking it up a bit. Losing the glasses for contacts or similar..

You could always experiment. Hair grows back. See where it takes you :)

Oh yeah and lose those baggy tshirts.. they make you look even tinier ... got a leather jacket (we women love the touch and smell of those in addition to the look )

You can play the kazoo? I think you lie. I've never seen an adult able to play them, and I've never seen a kid who couldn't. What's your secret?

Hey Man, I hate to say it even though most dont agree, but metal isn't what a lot of woman will come around. I used to play bass guitar in a friends band which was metal, and well we would light the show on fire, and then one of these poppy bands come on with their acoustic music and all about love lyrics and there went the show, due to females. Dont give up any hope or doubts about what you play or why woman are attracted to acoustic music, i dont and I do know a few rocker woman that come to the shows, just to see us play. Play what you play, and live for it!

New York dude who plays in his underwear....not hot.

Harry Connick Jr....hot

Just my opinion.

Personally, I don't go for musicians. Too many of the ones 'trying' to be famous think the grunge look is what's needed. Long hair is ick.

Gosh who would that be? Bet he'd avoid playing outside in winter..

Only person I know in the music industry who'd play in a pair of jocks is Flea from the Peppers..

OP: From one rocker to another :

#1. Metal is awesome.
#2. You look way older than 23. Get a hair stylist (seriously) to young-up the facial hair and coiffure.
#3. Hit up some small metal shows in your new digs - you will meet awesome chicks at tiny venues.
#4. There is nothing wrong with being a dork. Girls love nerds - especially rocker/bad-ass nerds.
#5. Tell me how it goes in the end ;)

Good luck homeslice.

PunkJesster, I totally agree! Punk musicians are probably the hottest but metal is awesome too, requires the musician to truly master his instrument due to the fast pace of the music and talent is attractive, so is dedication to the things you care about.

The other tips are right on as well. It also depends what he's looking for, metal is probably not going to attract a little princess Paris Hilton look alike but if you go to venues dedicated to punk/metal/etc you will find many girls who will appreciate your music and that will give you a great opening to get to know them...

Dorks are so cute, please don't hide it!

Most women I date go "oh your a musician, nice" meaning its like a bonus, but women do not set out to date a musician, unless your famous.

As for metal, I would think the women who like that kind of music would be into the "Outlaw biker with drug connections" type.

I am in the south, so most of the "good" girls like country or christian rock.

I really dont care too much, playing ANY instrument is a big plus. But not quite so much so is the guy who "says" he plays guitar but can only strum 3 chords in one key and hardly ever gets it out of the corner. For me its more about musical skill than which instrument, but its all good. I play bass guitar and my musical understanding far outstrips my bass playing at this moment in time. But it always makes for a cool discussion, and a great form of expression when I do get to play somewhere.

Think about the average male songwriter. What do they write about? GIRLS! So for some, they do it for the chicks and there passion is the music, which is about chicks. Not always so true with aggressive music. That sort of thing is more about politics or angsy stuff. That doesn't make them any less passionate about females. A person who is of amorous mind will play this sort of music and be passionate about the anger within the music AND females. They can't help it. Why? Because they're passionate about everything they love. It's part of the artistic mindset.

I wasn't sure how this gets laid out so I thought I should specify what I was responding too.

For me its the passion a musician has for his music....could be a guitar, bass, violin, singer...it's the soul that goes into the playing that gets to me. If you are just playing and it does not mean a whole lot to you then it means nothing to me......and doesn't catch my eye.
