Main photo deleted
Posted: 8/6/2009 4:34:36 PM
I received notice that my main photo had been deleted due to the fact that it violated one or more of the image rules. It is a photo of me sitting in a chair, my face is plainly visible, it is not vulgar or immodest, it has no copyrights, it is not a joke and it is not a cartoon. It is a clear photo of ME.

I have a pretty good idea of who may have deleted it and there should be some fail safe procedure to prevent this type of malicious behavior. If you can give me a sincere reason as to why it was deleted, I would appreciate it. Please don't say it's due to too much cleavage. That is absurd. There are photos of women in bathing suits that show much more cleavage than a long sleeved, v-neck sweater. There is nothing indecent about the photo and you can easily see what I look like.

Thank you for your time.

Presuming that the photo that is currently your main profile pic, is the same one that you received notice on.... the notice would hinge on the word 'clear'.

If you check here: http://www.plentyoffish.com/rate_newimages.aspx (or click Rating -> Rate New/Any Images) and start approving or disapproving other POF member pictures, you'll sooner or later come across one that says "This is a Main profile Picture, Select Delete if it the picture isn't a clear shot of the users face." in red letters above the photo.

While "clear shot of the users face" is subjective, I would take it to mean that the users face is clearly visible and occupies at least 1/8 of the photograph.... because not all members view POF on a 26" monitor, some are viewing on iPhones or Blackberries with little itty-bitty screens.

Ergo, the picture that currently shows as your main, *I* would mark as "Delete, No Clear Headshot" simply because your face is 1/16 or less of the photo. (Not saying I reviewed yours specifically, that's just the rule I'm going by since POF doesn't have a link to specific standards on the image rating page.)

And, as far as I can tell, POF doesn't delete based on one user's rating. It seems that your photo would have to have a certain minimum number of negative ratings before a moderator would notify you and remove your image.

No one specifically deleted your profile – it’s an automated system process based on some unknown number of reports by different users reporting your profile either directly from your profile or via the RATING link. In other words, one user cannot report you more than once, and one user reporting your picture will not be the sole determinating factor.

If however a different number of people report you, then there is thought to be a substantiated pattern of validity to the report. Given that there is no staff to validate pictures on the spot, the site relies on this self governing process. Unfortunately the threshold for automated deletion may be set too low and I can’t answer as to what that number is nor will Admin obviously let that cat out of the bag.

The system isn’t perfect and some people can get burned for a perfectly good picture unfortunately – that’s the drawback to no staff on hand.

All I can say is if you truly believe that your picture was clearly visible, not blurry, large enough, not obstructed in any way – in other words, we could pick you out of a police line up based on your picture without any uncertainty – feel free to upload it again.

If it were me, I would “tend” to approve the picture if it’s the same one you have up now as your main – subjective as that may be.

No where in the specifications does it say that the main photo has to be a close-up photo, nor does it say that it has to occupy at least 1/8 of the photograph. Just because someone uses iPhones or Blackberries shouldn't cause me to have to replace a photo that is visible on an average computer screen. That is patently absurd.

Also, I never said that the deletion had anything to do with user's rating. I do not have ANY of my photos rated. Underneath the main photo on a profile there is a button to click if you feel the photo doesn't show a clear view of the person's face. ANYONE who views your profile can click this button and have your photo deleted. I don't feel that someone who may have ulterior motives should have that power. Do you?

If you can go without a photo, why should mine have to be a closeup? At least, with mine you can see what I look like. If mine isn't clear enough, then it should be mandatory to have photos, period. How can no photo be better than one that isn't a closeup? Sounds rather silly, doesn't it?

Trapped,

Thank you for your reply. Yes, the photo that is currently up is the one that was deleted. I have reuploaded it. I appreciate your response and your opinion. I have removed any other photos that may have violated the sites rules. Also, I do not have my photos rated, so it has nothing to do with part of the system.

Again, thank you for your time and your response.

I use 1/8 of the photo as a guideline, it's not a hard and fast rule, nor do I get a ruler and calculator and measure pictures. ;)

A moderator replied just before you did, but he said basically the same thing I did: enough people indicated that they can't see your face in your main photo, so the system automagically notified you and removed the photo.

Also, I never said that the deletion had anything to do with user's rating. I do not have ANY of my photos rated.

I was showing you where others --- any POF member, myself, even you --- can review other people's pictures and tell the system which ones should be flagged for removal. During this process (using the link I gave earlier) I don't know you from Eve from Nicole Kidman, all I see is a picture.
