What would you take?Page 1 of 3    (1, 2, 3)
Your house and all its contents are about to be completely destroyed by a disaster. Your family/pets etc are safe and you have enough time to take one item from the house........what would you take?

For me, it would probably be a mobile phone, so I could let people know I was ok. When the Tsunami hit, my sister was on honeymoon - and was on a canoe safari in the sea off Phuket...........the hours when we had no contact with her were some of the worst imagineable.

So, what would your item be?

It would have to be the laptop, I already lost a lifetime of photos when I split with ex, so I keep the last 5 years pics on discs in my laptop bag, plus theres an O2 dongle in there so at least I could email people to let em know that were all ok.

Oh crap, gonna have to beef up my home security now that I've just advertised some of my burglables!

I am going to be crafty and take my handbag. It is stuffed full of crucial things that I will need. Phone, charger, purse, umbrella (in case this disaster is weather based) makeup bag, car keys so I can quickly escape this disaster and I also stash a ring my girls bought me in there. So my one item is in fact many items. But still just one.

I'm currently housesitting for friends who are in China - not heard from them since last Thursday, and the home front is getting a bit anxious now as there has been no response to texts or emails.

If there was no other person in the house, I'd probably take my mobile too.

Ooh this is such a difficult one, but I think I'd need to say all my photo's. I have too many books and although I would be gutted to leave them they can always be replaced. Photo's can't so they will come with us.

(Can I sneak in my jewelry box too? It's got a couple of sentimental things I'd like to keep )

Are we only allowed one item?

I'd grab my speedos so that I'd still be able to wear them when visiting Alton Towers.

Again as others have said, would take my photos, they are irreplaceable. Unfortunately I dont have a laptop, I use a pc and I think I would endanger my life trying to unplug all the wires to the tower. Hmmm note to self, wonder if I should get a laptop?

Would my record collection count as one item, even though it amounts to about 10,000 individual pieces of vinyl?

If it didn't it would be either my Linn LP12 or my old Leica range finder camera. Or should I take my lucky pants?

My entire collection of WWII telegraph poles and my two favourite JCB buckets.

OT: I lost virtually everything of meaning during my divorce, and what little I did manage to get was deliberately damaged, and simply not worth keeping.

But, strangely, it did me a favour cos I realised that we surround ourselves with far too much "sentimental clutter", most of which is meaningless to anyone else. It can even become a problem for others when we die.

I reckon any keepsakes we have are merely an aide-memoire and aren't the memory itself.

Yes, I reckon you're right there. All my memories are firmly embedded in my head and I don't need keepsakes, although a picture of my son would be nice. I really haven't a clue what I'd take with me but I'm looking at the Dalai Lama's Book of Wisdom and thinking it would give me lots of inspiration so I might take that.

Nothing at all just as long as the family was safe, yes would be sad that it had all gone up in smoke....but the memories live on in your mind......

My home insurance policy, I would want to get my claim in straight away, before the insurance company gets swamped by the rest of you putting your claims in.
