| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/13/2009 12:33:27 PM | Women boxers will compete at the London 2012 Olympics, the International Olympic Committee has ruled
They will fight at three weight divisions after the IOC's executive board ruled that boxing would no longer be a male-only event.
Should women be allowed to box , we all know the hell cats on a saturday nite after few cheeky vimtos or is now the world truely equal both men & women able to knock seven bells out of each other in name or sport

They will fight at three weight divisions
Well I guess that'll be 'slim', 'average' and 'a few extra pounds' then.

Should women be allowed to box
Absolutely!
I cannot think of any earthly reason why they shouldn't, given that boxing is a legal sport.
It's not my cup-of-tea, though I can see its appeal from a training point of view, and the odd couple of bouts I've had gave me a healthy respect for it.

| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/13/2009 1:48:01 PM | | does any other sport other than this and horse racing weigh you as part of the rules? (doubting myself now, they do weigh you in boxing don't they?) | |

Judo and all the kick kick punch punch type martial art thingies have weight categories, plus weight lifting. So I imagine they weigh them for that rather than guessing
With the three categories of 'slim', 'average' and 'a few extra pounds' who chooses which category they go in? Can't imagine someone suggesting to Serena Williams she was 'a few extra pounds' if she chose to box
|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/13/2009 2:23:09 PM | Of course they should be able to fight - as long as there's someone to throw in the Jell-O | |

Bites own tongue .......
Steady!
It's 'boxing'......not you-know-what!
any chance we can have naked woman wrestling in baby oil in 2012 olympics instead?
Bugger! You beat me to it!
Only trouble is, there'd have to be a similar competition for the men.

does any other sport other than this and horse racing weigh you as part of the rules?
I once watched (in a totally disinterested capacity, of course) a female oil wrestling match at which I found myself yelling 'waaaay!" at various moments, even though there wasn't a set of scales to be seen......
Well I guess that'll be 'slim', 'average' and 'a few extra pounds' then.
pmsl.
Knowing my luck, the three categories will be 'lardy', 'dobber' and 'ginormous'
I could say about time, these girls train long and hard and deserve the recognition as dedicated athletes, that the men in their chosen sport have had for many years....
Sums it up well, I reckon.

| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/13/2009 3:21:12 PM | I had a couple of women fight over me down the pub last night after last orders.
The way one of them got in a couple of left hand jabs she could easily make the 2012 Olympic team.
|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 1:56:12 AM | | I have no problem with this. Have seen a couple of rounds on one of the boxing programs. I never thought i'd watch womens footy but can watch that now the game has got stronger. If there is money in it for the promoters then it will happen anyway | |
|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 2:22:12 AM |
I think they should definately be involved in boxing ............maybe serving light refreshments inbetween rounds ???

|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 4:00:07 AM | I don't like boxing, either sex, as I think a 'sport' which has as it's main objective the damaging of ones opponent shouldn't happen.
However.... it does. So why differentiate between the genders? If men do it then there is no reason why women shouldn't.
I don't watch men doing it, and I wont watch women doing it.
|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 4:43:55 AM | Nothing wrong with anyone of either gender fighting. As a species, we've been doing this sort of thing for thousands of years.
As for specifically women taking part in this sort of sport, I'm all for it. One of the PE teachers at school back in Scotland was on the British Olympic team back in the 80's. She's an excellent teacher and a pleasure to spar with. Some of her female students were the sneakiest and most vicious people i've ever had the pleasure of sparring with.
Last woman i met that studied this stuff seriously was a wonderful lass that practises Wu Shu. Learned a lot from her. Annoying that she has a boyfriend.
Like any martial art, it doesn't matter what your gender is, it's how much work you are willing to put into practising.

| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 4:47:55 AM | | the martial art i did wing chun kung fu was invented by a woman.the basis being useing your opponants strength against them. | |
|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 5:05:35 AM | I have to say I nearly cheered upon hearing the decision to allow female fighters at the olympics!
I have seen a few female bouts and I have to say these women are pretty damm clued up on the dynamics of the whole sport.
I saw Nicola Adams come forward to claim a silver medal at the world championships and she was pretty dam awesome.
but I admit I would much rather watch the men ... *as my mind goes running off on a tangent*

|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 9:33:00 AM | I'm not a fan of boxing but absolutely women should be able to box as a sport. Why should any sport be male orientated? | |
|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 10:03:35 AM |
who in their right mind would want to watch two grown sweaty athletic women fisting each other in the ring till someone gives in?
I could supply details of various websites that cater for such things.......well, not me personally, you understand.......er......a bloke down the FHT was ....er....mentioning it the other night.......
the martial art i did wing chun kung fu was invented by a woman.the basis being useing your opponants strength against them.
Typical!
but I admit I would much rather watch the men ... *as my mind goes running off on a tangent*
I'm with you on that.....whilst watching boxing, my mind drifts off to the latest football results....
I have seen a few female bouts and I have to say these women are pretty damm clued up on the dynamics of the whole sport.
And all power to them! | |

| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 1:01:43 PM | | As i grew up in Bury Mr Oggers i have never been a fighter in my life. More of a flower picker in Kay gardens when it was a garden........ But let the girls have a go at the boxing not the ice cream selling that is!!!!!! | |
|
| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/14/2009 2:28:22 PM | | iv been a big boxing fan most of my life and i dont have any problem with women taking the sport up..but it do batter the ole face up a bit..the headguard and gumshield doesnt realy give your boat race much protection..especialy your hooter..so if any woman wants to walk around with a face like joe bugner..then boxing is the sport for them... | |

| Women will fight in 2012 Posted: 8/15/2009 11:02:44 AM | Des Kelly in today's Daily Mail reveals the three weight categories ..........
* The 'This mirror makes me look fat ' category.
* The 'This is never a size bloody 10' division.
* And the heavyweights, or the ' Kerry Katona Class' as it is also known.
He then comments " This must be the first time in newspapers the words 'class' and 'Kerry Katona' have been used in the same sentence."
