The General Lee... on a Date...
Posted: 8/13/2009 2:46:05 PM
I was in Montreal this past weekend.

On the way to walking to a bar to watch the UFC fight on Saturday, I saw a General Lee replica (from The Dukes of Hazzard) parked in front of a club.

If you don't know what the General Lee is, this is what it is:
http://www.speakenglishordie.com/wp-content/uploads/general.lee.jpg

And I was wondering... is the owner trying to use their car to pick up? And what would a typical girl's reaction be if I picked her up in The General Lee?

Would she laugh? Would she think it's cheeseball? Would she like it?

But then I thought if a girl picked me up in The General Lee I would think it's hilarious yet really cool.

If you were getting taken out on the date with someone and they're picking you up/driving, what would be your reaction if your date showed up with The General Lee?

And just to be clear... I'm directing this at girls AND guys.

If you got it, flaunt it. The General included.

Rickeyes, I'm sure you know by now that most haters simply don't have the means....

The pick up would have to know what THE GENERAL LEE is in the first place and I doubt that would impress her. Would not impress me however THE STARSHIP ENTERPRISE would get my attention! What a stupid question!!!!

Oh hell, there's one mental image I'll never be able to un-burn from my mind's-eye now.

OP I would probably get a laugh out of it, but I don't know that I'd say it "impressed" me.

Especially not if Boss Hogg was driving.

I would think it was totally cheesy..and totally cool!! I love muscle cars..first car I ever drove was a 1970 Ford Mustang fastback..351 Cleveland, awesome car!! Ever since, I've had a weakness for Detroit steel.

I also fondly remember being 9 years old and lying on the floor in front of the TV on Friday night, 10pm, watching the Dukes of Hazzard..was a very special thing to get to stay up that late and watch that show. I had the biggest crush on Bo..and pretty sure I wanted to be Daisy..

Yup, gotta say it would totally rock, and I would be totally impressed!

Well... the confederate flag on the roof of the car is problematic in my eyes. I would think that this guy was an extremist, and I most likely would not get in. Without the flag, it's a cool car.

The Confederate battle flag, called the "Southern Cross" or the cross of St. Andrew, has been described variously as a proud emblem of Southern heritage and as a shameful reminder of slavery and segregation. In the past, several Southern states flew the Confederate battle flag along with the U.S. and state flags over their statehouses. Others incorporated the controversial symbol into the design of their state flags. The Confederate battle flag has also been appropriated by the Ku Klux Klan and other racist hate groups. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, more than 500 extremist groups use the Southern Cross as one of their symbols.

Well I just wanted to be clear... and don't forget that there are also Canadians, UK people and Australians on this site as well.

And I'm sure there are at least some immigrants to the US and Canada who don't know what the General Lee is. I'm pretty sure neither Immigration Department makes knowledge of the General Lee a requirement before entering the country.

I LOVE classic cars.
Not necessarily the guys who drive them.
When I see a fine tuned classic set of wheels, I usually think that it is very cool.
If the owner is there, I usually say cool car or hot wheels, something complimentary. Even if I don't like that particular car, I can appreciate the time, energy and money it takes to restore an old car and let them know.

It is something different and unusual, definitely a conversation starter.

^^^ I think you could pass for a really nice Hispanic version of Daisy Duke.

Now I'm thinking of what an All-Hispanic version of The Dukes of Hazard would be like...

the general lee was cool enough when i was a kid but now would come off as too redneck-y (especially with the confederate flag on the top). the coolest car from my youth was the starsky and hutch ford gran torino- that cherry red muscle car with the white swoosh racing stripe down the side. what i find funny now is that starsky and hutch were undercover cops...how could you NOT spot that car from a mile away if you were a criminal?!?! ahh, the magic of hollywood and tv...

It's such a great car, and it is funny, but I couldn't get past the flag. I wouldn't be able to get in.

Now, if a date turned up in a Vanishing Point Challenger... be still, my heart!
