Would you do any job rather than be unemployed?
Posted: 8/15/2009 7:14:40 AM
I was talking to a friend of mine who says her daughter has just taken a job as a cleaner although she is qualified as a vets nurse. She has applied for numerous positions around the uk but either doesnt get a response or they say they are looking for someone with experience. She's so fed up with doing nothing that shes taken on a local cleaning job.

My question is would you do any job even if you were overqualified to do it rather than be unemployed or would you rather wait for the right job to come along?

I agree totally. Being unemployed, for me anyway, was one of my worst experiences. Having any kind of job, especially in the current climate, gives you a sense of purpose and direction.

If it were me, yes I would. Employers would rather see from a CV that someone had been working rather than sitting at home or in a jobclub sending out CVs. Even voluntary work - anything rather than stopping at home. All experience is good whatever it is.

If I was unemployed, then yes.

However, I am currently in a part-time job (25-30 hours) and have been looking for a full-time position, and I'm not going for a job that pays less than what I am on now, just because it's full-time.

I'll keep on looking.

I'd most definately do any job until something I really want happens.

My son is a mechanic & has been made redundant recently & I'm dropping off an application form this afternoon to Green Key for a bar job for him. He said to me the other day 'a job is a job at the moment mum'!

Always better to be doing something rather than nothing & more rewarding & fullfilling!

How about neither?
If the job market were that bad and I was unemployed and unable to find work, I'd sell the car, move my stuff into storage, but a boat and go sailing until the job market was bouyant again. If you can't maintain a lifestyle, don't.............get a different one.

Absolutely, a job is a job.

I've been out of work for a few months and have just taken on temporary work to keep me going, I am overqualified for the job I'm doing but it's better than staying at home, however I've just received my first paycheck, it's hardly rewarding and fullfilling, I'm working for peanuts, but it's still better than what I got from the government.

Probably, yes. A job is a job and often it's easier to get a better job than it is to get that first job.
I'm currently working in a field that I want to get out of. Unfortunately, the field I want to move into is both over subscribed and requires experience.
I've opted to drop my full-time hours to part time so I'll have time to volunteer in my area and study for a Master's.

I'd do anything. But I like TJ's idea of sitting it out. I mean sailing it out.

I once worked in a biscuit factory inbetween jobs - would rather work than not. Even when I was a single mum and unable to work due to my child being so young - I did voluntary work which helped me into the job market later on.

Gaps on a cv isn't so good to explain to a future employer.

I find that some what of a silly question. If one needs the money, One works. If one does not then hold out.
When my boys were little I worked odd jobs in addition to my career job. I would take my paid vacation and then work extra help temp. jobs. I did a one week shift stuffing paper in new purses! another time picking and packing for a factory. Getting stuff ready for shipping. None of those jobs are anything like my career job as an animal control officer. I met new people got an extra paycheck and my kids got some things we could not normally afford.
But if she is going into debt. or Mum is paying while she sits home and whines about jobs being below her. Then she needs a good spanking.

On the nursing note, I have just qualifed as a nurse, and had Trust interviews where there were 10 staff nurse posts for 40 newly qualified :(

As it was I was one of the lucky ones and I have been given a post starting early Sept, I realise how extremely lucky I am and it has been heart breaking for my friends and fellow newly qualifeds, all who have become close close friends, to have no job to go to after three hard years..

So on that note, yes I would have taken an unqualifed post, support worker, or band 3 or 4 post.. Anything to earn money to feed my daughter, keep a roof over our heads and pay back some of my ridiculous student overdraft!! :(

With reference to a previous thread where someone complained about being only £3 better off taking a job than being on benefits, I have to say that I would rather work. Watching 24/7 Jeremy Kyle or Trisha would drive me absolutely potty! It's a question of self-esteem for me as well. It's probably not so important for your pride if your peers are all unemployed and on benefits as well; one of the reasons why we have ghetto's of unemployment all over the place. If I didn't work, I'm sure I would spend a lot of time asking myself the question, "what is the point of you?".

If I had to I would take any job on a temporary basis. Sitting at home all day would drive me round the bend and with no spare cash I wouldn't be able to spend the extra time decorating or revamping the garden. I don't particularly like shopping so 'window' shopping would be out.

At the end of the day you do whatever puts food on your plate and pays the bills while you continue searching for the elusive job that you are after.

In my mind there should be no unqualified jobs sitting vacant when there are so many people out of work although I accept that travel costs/transport times etc do make it very much more difficult for some people.

When I worked in recruitment we had a very well qualified man came looking for a job. We had nothing in his line of work and the only thing we could offer was in a call centre. He turned us down, which was pretty much what we expected as financially he could manage. Less than 2 months later he was back saying he was bored witless and needed a reason to get out of bed and get dressed. When I left the company, he was still happily working in the call centre and said he enjoyed the routine without the pressure that he had with his previous job.

I'd much rather be working than unemployed. Then again there are a few jobs I don't think I would be able to do. I don't have problems with flipping burgers, cleaning or even voluntary work. It would give me something to do.

I know under current circumstances in today's market, even any job isn't that easy to come by. The company which I work for had 3 positions going in one department & over 130 people applied.

Your friend's daughter is correct to get a job but the job should be related to her core professional vocational objective. I would also suggest she start a small pet sitting business, taking animals to the vet for client's that work or even dog bathing or anything that get her noticed. Soon she will see that door will open. She could also sign up for a registery that has in home services for seniors. She could transfer her medical knowledge to working with people with a little effort and study.

If she has done this and it was unsuccessful then she should seek employment working in a pet shop, a drug store which sells pet products, or at a local kennel. If she could she could also volunteer at the local animal shelter. Any of these positions would look great on a resume and advance the interest and skill of her core vocational objective.

The only problem with taking a office cleaning job is that it might erode her confidence, motivation, decision making abilities and squash her dream of becoming a vet nurse.

It is a good question and I hope your friend appreciates your concern. Now go out and live in Love, Linda

spent a good year after leaving uni doing any job that came along, when was chatting with the interviewer for the current job, they liked the fact that spent the time working even if it was non relevent work instead of sitting at home and not doing much :)

I am being made redundant on 4th September. I was in this same situation this time last year and was out of work for 7 months - I do NOT want the same thing this time so I will take whatever I can get but continue searching for something along the lines of what I am experienced in. Not only would I lose out on my pay packet but also my working tax credit which is a much needed boost to my income. Last year I verged on major depression and do not want to go down that same road.

Any job is better than no job in my opinion

I shall be redundant at the beginning of October and it scares the shi-ite out of me. I've been in this job for 20 years, and the company closure has come as a bit of a blow. I have a mortgage and bills which must be paid so.......
Would you do any job rather than be unemployed?
... yes. I think so. There probably are jobs which I wouldn't take, but on the whole, yes - I'd do any job rather than be unemployed.

I'm told that as a stop-gap, the people who work through the night at Tesco, filling shelves, are pretty well paid - so maybe I'll do that for a while until a more suitable job turns up!

Absolutely.

I'd rather do voluntary work, even, rather than sit at home worrying about a yawning gap developing in my CV.

My question is would you do any job even if you were overqualified to do it rather than be unemployed or would you rather wait for the right job to come along?

For me, it depends on my circumstances at the time. I have no kids, no mortgage, I'm relatively free. So I probably wouldn't do any job. I've not worked for 14 mths, but for 10 of those I was caring for my mother. I've just started looking for a job now. I've paid a lot of tax as I've always been in work until I became a carer, I don't feel guilty.

She's so fed up with doing nothing that shes taken on a local cleaning job.

I've done a lot of jobs in my time, and for various reasons some of them I hate... If I don't get something in my current field, I'd much rather be a cleaner, and hopefully work for myself. I'm not the only person who thinks this, my mate has her own business, cleans carpets, and some cleaning jobs, she thinks the same. I've already discussed with her how to get jobs if I work as a cleaner for myself. I used to do customer service for a big company (that shall remain nameless) that were hated, I got grief constantly. I couldn't stand being sat down taking flak for something I couldn't change.

However if I don't get a job soon I may do voluntary work to help me move into jobs I'd like. I won't stay on benefits for ages, it's an interim measure.
