Guitar tabs and editors

Wonder if anyone can help me? I'm interested in trying out guitar tabs. I've avoided these so far as I prefer to read music, but I can see I'm missing out on lots of good tunes on the web. I downloaded tabs for a tune on one site and found I couldn't read the file. The site told me I needed to download a program to do this but when I tried, it kept sending me to other sites. I wasn't too happy about downloading unknown files either, however genuine they looked. Does anyone know whether I really need a program to be able to display the tabs and print them (or programs if there are more) and if so where I can get one free? Also, is there a site where I can download tabs and just read them with standard image software normall found on a PC? I don't want to edit them, just read. Thanks :)

www.911tabs.com pretty much searches all tab sites together, though www.ultimate-guitar.com is probably the best one.

Most tabs should be available for you to read straight from the internet browser. If you had to download, it was probably a Guitar Pro or Powertab which requries you to havea program so that actually plays back the song and shows you the tab at the same time, often showing all instruments for an entire song.

For example,
I typed in "pixies" into search (bands) and then clicked on a song in the GUITAR tabs column (notice the 'power' and 'pro' columns on the right), picked a tab from a website and got this:

Play away!

I like http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ for tabs . The songs can be available as tab (just a web page) or Guitar Pro file. Just stick with the tab version and there will be no need to download any additional software. At the bottom of each tab is a link "Print this tab" which will display the page in just text with no graphics or ads which you then can print and have a neat/clean copy to use offline.

Good luck and keep on playing!

You can just view tabs as text (.txt) files, but there are also programs like Guitar Pro (.gp3/4/5) and Power Tab (.ptb) that are pretty awesome. You can open the file (that you get from a reputable guitar site) and then play along with it while the notes are highlighted on screen and your computer plays a charmingly retro Nintendo-sounding version of the song.

I think both offer free trial downloads. Guitar Pro can open Power Tab files and I think it's worth the money. I've used it a lot.

Thanks for all you suggestions; they are really helpful. I had come across the Guitar Pro sample download but didn't know it was a well-known programme. I'd rather not bother downloading that unless it can translate tabs to notation, or did you mean it displayed the tabs on screen? I'll probably transfer them to notation anyway as I find easier to read. Or, you never know, tabs might become second nature too - I can only hope!

Yeah, too bad all guitar tabs are considered illegal according to the MPAA and their attacks on guitar tab websites. New songs are rare to come by for both Powertab or Guitar Pro since they started shutting down various US based sites. I use both GP and Ptabs, they are great programs for writing or learning, GP is better for making your own songs since it has drums and various other instruments.

TuxGuitar is what you want. It's 100% free and reads both Powertab and Guitar Pro files.
