Windows 7 boot screen
Posted: 8/18/2009 12:30:40 PM
I installed Windows 7 on a second partition and ran it long enough to know I love it.

But since it was just beta and because I have a need for hard drive space, I formatted over the Windows 7 partition and am waiting for the release in October.

The problem I am having is that since this was a dual boot set up with Windows xp pro, I am now left with a boot option screen to choose windows 7 or an earlier version, being my xp.

Could someone please help me get rid of that screen??

I have looked at the boot.ini and it does not list Windows 7.

Would this be a bios thing??

I believe the RC is still available for a free down load, and it will run till march i believe with full updates, i am still running the beta , but do have the RC on disk as well, the beta runs perfectly with no issues other than ditching the slow IE8 for firefox

Thanks for the feedback, but unfortunately that does not solve my problem with this boot screen.

Anyone?

That's not what I need either.

Perhaps I am not being clear.

I had a dual boot with xp pro and windows 7.

Formatted the partition that had Windows 7 on it.

Now I am left with XP pro. bcdedit would work if I was left with Vista or Windows 7 but I'm not. I have xp pro.

I have windows XP and a boot up screen that allows me to choose Windows 7 or an earlier version.

Sounds like the bootloader from Windows 7 is still in place, you might want to check out this site which sounds similar to the problem you're experiencing:

If the Windows XP Bootloader gets erased or corrupted, you can repair it without a complete reinstall. Below describes how to do this. More useful Windows tips can be found at WindowsInternals.com.

Disclaimer: Attempt this at your own risk, I assume no responsibility for any data lost.

Boot from the Windows XP CDROM in to the “Recovery” prompt. If you have not set an Administrator password, leave it blank. The Windows XP documentation (Help and Support) has a section on the Recovery Console if you’d like to learn more.

Then run:

bootcfg /rebuild
fixboot
fixmbr

Uhm....wow

You had Win7, but want to ditch 7 for now and return to XP?

fdisk /mbr

that would have restored the XP bootloader. Going through BCDEdit in XP is like going around the world to get to your nextdoor neighbor.

gosh. way to take a simple fix and government-it-up.
