| Abrupt communication style Posted: 8/21/2009 12:40:18 AM | People have told me, they notice my communication style is abrupt. I think one person I have talked to described it in her words as 'all full stops and no punctuation'.
If that does not describe it adequately, I will use an example she also used.
GO TO DINNER DRINKS PIZZA
When it should be the following; Would you like to go to dinner with me. We could go out for pizza and a few drinks. Would you like that?
There are reasons that is causing this; Firstly, I am a higher functioning autistic and secondly I experience social anxiety from time to time.
I would like to get your opinions on possible strategies to deal with this.

| Abrupt communication style Posted: 8/21/2009 1:08:20 AM | Hi Teejay
Well if you're texting I don't see anything wrong with your style of communicating a potential night out with "go to dinner drinks pizza". If you actually talk that way it may come across as abrupt to some. I think it's important for the other party to be understanding and sensitive to our unique styles as well.
Half the battle is being willing to work at improving something you're not satisified with, so that's a great start. I suffer a little myself from social anxiety, and don't like large crowds, so I avoid that if I can. I find that I'm far more relaxed in smaller social groups and situations. However I am not bothered by public speaking. Weird how we are wired sometimes. I love the wilderness too, but dislike being cooped up in an elevator.
Just be comfortable with yourself and try not to panic when things feel a little out of the ordinary. Breathing exercises and learning to ground myself have helped immensely.
Hope this helps some. All the best to you!!!

I say write it like you normally would then read it back to yourself. I do this sometimes and it helps!
In my opinion you are not autistic. If that's the case I wish we all were. You wrote very sincerley and spelled everything right. You are destined to find a very good person.
