| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 8:43:49 PM | What: Bicycle Ride on Lochside Trail to Mattick's Farm and back When: Saturday, September 26, 2009 Meet at: Driver Licensing parking lot below the Monkey Tree Pub on Borden at McKenzie Time: 1 pm
Family Friendly. There is ice cream at Mattick's farm. There is Timmie's for bikers with broods (ha ha) and the Monkey Tree for those without. All in all - there are many ways to replenish the calories expended. Some, like death (now what would make me think of that?), quicker than others.

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 9:47:41 PM | Sounds like a fun trip.
For those of unfamiliar with the area and wishing to be properly prepared...
What is the estimated distance of the trip in km (one-way or return trip)?
The route, is it a road or trail? Is the surface gravel or paved or? Gentle inclines and mostly level?
Last but not least, this fair-weather cyclists asks, will this adventure proceed rain or shine?
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 9:56:12 PM | hmm. I'm guessing the Flyer up there is not a cyclist... Ah well, a camping and convoy buddy is still pretty good.
I don't usually do the welcome to everyone thing so please know that whoever signs up is most welcome indeed. We are all on here to meet people and have fun.
My co-host will be happy to answer any and all technical questions lol - as soon as he comes online and sees that I've managed to get back on track and post the event.
Of course er I know the answers too, but I have to leave him SOME thing to do, now don't I?

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 10:40:53 PM | Thanks for the invite. Sounds like fun and a great way to meet some people. Is this event happening rain or shine? I did the Lochside Trail from the Waddling Dog to Stonehouse Pub yesterday (by the ferry terminal). It's a nice trail along side the highway (all paved).
Mattick's Farm: 101-5325 Cordova Bay Road, Victoria, BC V8Y 2L3 - (250) 658-1535 "you discover Victoria's premiere shopping destination. Mattick's Farm has shops, a market, mini-golf, garden centre and a renowned tearoom and restaurant known as Adrienne's Tea Garden.
Doesn't look like a very far ride at all.... 5 k tops if you take the long route... but that's by car... maybe the trail is longer???
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 10:45:19 PM | Haha, thanks for leaving me SOMETHING to answer! The ride is likely 15km each way, mostly flat trails all the way. Very scenic, and not much in the way of roads to cross. Difficulty on a scale of 1-10 would be a 2, maybe 3. Most bikes are fine, except maybe road bikes with racing tires, which might be prone to flats. Make sure to carry water, and if you have it, a tire repair kit. I'll bring a few supplies, and as long as everyone doesn't get flats, we should be fine. | |

It could be that short, I've never ridden it with my bike equipped with my computer thingy. We can continue out along the trail for as far as anyone wants to go, keeping in mind you have to turn around and ride back :) I think rain or shine sounds fine, unless there is some freak storm!
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 11:01:49 PM | ^^^ Thanks for the valuable information on a great ride.
I'm considering it.
My bike has a bike computer so if I do join you I can provide the distance travelled, average speed, time elapsed, temperature, etc. afterwards.
BTW For longer trips I carry a spare tire tube in my packsack. They are light and inexpensive and its much easier to swap a tube than trying to patch a punctured tube, esp. if its raining.

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 11:10:16 PM | Do we need a rainy day plan....and are there any suggestions out there?
I don't melt in the rain but apparently the fishies aren't as tough as me out in PR.
(maybe that makes them a better catch...?)
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/25/2009 11:22:08 PM | | Not sure we need a plan, if it's raining a bit, so what, we'll dry off later. If we have a torrential monsoon, well, I guess most people won't show anyhow. But c'mon, this is Victoria, what are the chances of rain?? | |
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 7:15:30 AM | | If I manage to come over, I will be riding from the ferry to to the meetup. That's approximately 35 Kms of scenice and flat riding and not difficult at all. | |
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 7:52:42 AM | ^^^ the rest of us put to shame
Well at least one of us will not be all "dewy" when we meet all the single men la~

EDIT: (hope fizzy doesn't mind a little friendly teasing!)

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 12:15:07 PM | Not at all Debra2008.
So if I read the info right, the ride itself is potentially 30 Kms total. That is just about perfect for a nice easy 15 Kms/hr pace. Even a very slow 10 - 15 Kms/hour is only about 2.5 hours tops, very pleasant.
Since the trail is very easy I seriously doubt it would take the full 2.5 hours for anyone.

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 12:37:34 PM |
"dewy"
I wondered about that too.
I was thinking perhaps it a new way of saying "steamy", or maybe "hot and bothered"... or should that be "hawt and bothered"?
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 4:40:22 PM | The trail is very flat. It runs on a former rail bed and railways are limited to a maximum 7% grade - else their steel wheels slip on the rails.
The railway formerly went out to farms and fields near Sidney to bring the produce to Victoria. As I understand it, they grew grapes on the peninsula and brought them to the winery which is on what is now Quadra Street near McKenzie Avenue. Hence the Keg location there being called "The Keg at the Winery".
The trail is a very nice one. I can not imagine the ride being much more than a three quarters of an hour. I used to ride from Keating Cross Road to Esquimalt in about an hour and a quarter. The ride on the 26th will only be a portion - probably less than half. But I imagine the group will ride much slower than I did as I was commuting and wanted to get home!
It may rain. But after about 20 years of living in Victoria, I realized that I am water proof. So - it may rain. Or not. Or both. Makes no never mind. I am sure it will be a nice ride and a wonderful time.
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 4:45:49 PM | One of the nicest parts of this route occurs within a couple of kms of the start. We will go over a long wooden boardwalk that goes over a large waterfoul area. There are bird blinds and places to look at the ducks, geese etc. Bring cameras?
We will then go along farms and fields for several miles. We will be sheltered by or alongside trees for much of the route. It it quite attractive in many areas. Whoever picked the route made an excellent choice.

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 6:57:30 PM | Oh! That was me of course!!
no?
No.
Good job Dogsnstuff.
I think there was some strict requirement somewhere not to bike our little bottoms off. THIS time around....

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/26/2009 10:52:36 PM | | Man what bad timing. Once in eight years I take a cruise and you do something I really enjoy. Oh well maybe the next one. Have a good time and think about another will you? | |
|
| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/28/2009 5:18:41 PM | Is this the route?
Walking directions to 4025 Borden St, Saanich, BC 1.9 km – about 24 mins 1. Head north on Ralph St toward Lancaster Rd 0.3 km 2. Turn left at Rainbow St 0.3 km 3. Turn right at McKenzie Ave 1.2 km 4. Turn left at Borden St Destination will be on the right
1.9 kM x 2 seems a short ride.

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 8/28/2009 11:14:28 PM | Here is a link to a map of the Galloping Goose Trail and connections such as the Lochside Trail which is where we will be cycling;
http://gvcc.bc.ca/recrides/goosenorth.jpg
Based on the distance thing-y, it looks like over 5 km - maybe 7 km? each way. With a fun stop in between. That is sufficient I think for a family friendly bicycle ride to ease some of us back onto our bikes.
Those wanting more exercise can bicycle to meet us and then back to their house or cars and still enjoy the company of the not quite so proficient YET or they can stop for ice cream with us and then continue beyond us, if they are fast they might catch up to us again before we get back to Tim Horton's/Monkey Tree.

| VICTORIA BIKE & BEVY WITH (Optional) BROOD Posted: 9/1/2009 1:20:17 PM | I have to admit.I don't own a bike. Is there acceptance with someone with nothing but shoes? This sounds like fun. Could you tell me if a bike is absolutely important. Or can someone fake it?LoL. James. | |
