"Jacques Demers, a Stanley Cup winning coach who has spoken frankly about his lifelong struggle to read, is slated for a seat in the red chamber. "
To the wonderful team of 2 retired CBC broadcasters Pamela Wallin and the chubby dude whose unforgettable name and credentials escape me, we now have a hockey coach who can't read.
Running a country is alot like playing hockey. Drop the puck, skate, have a fist fight, and hit the puck. I can see how he will be a confidence inspiring leader to martial us toward the 22nd century.
Is Harper on drugs????? If so, I want to know where he gets them, cause he sure is thinking outside the box.
I am certain his next Senate nomination will be the guy from the Shamwow commercial. Given that Vince has experience both in promoting the Shamwow and the SlapChop, he is well suited to the post and bears Harper's credentials of being a TV guy.
Why the hell did the US get Obama and we are still stuck with a stupid, dumbed down neutered version of George Bush? | |

Have you any clue who Chretien appointed in his 13 years in office? Why don't you google it because I'm not going to waste my time posting it for someone who gets their politics from the Toronto Star. The opposition parties have been blocking Senate reform for 3 years. What was Harper supposed to do? Leave 18 seats empty for the Liberals to fill which would further skew the balance in the Senate? Give me a break.
And calling him a version of George Bush just shows your intelligence. He is nothing of the sort and while I'm not a fan of all his policies, he's managing the country well and so far hasn't stolen billions of our money i.e.; the Liberals and the HRDC billion dollar boondoggle, the sponsorship scandal and the ineffective and grossly overbudget gun registry. | |

Forumrum, why is a hockey coach the best candidate for that position? Over policy professors, scientists, social scientists, activists, physicians, writers? Surely you can see the essence of my message, that Harper, as a relatively uneducated man, is choosing media heros to stack his Senate with.
I would prefer to see you substantively argue your case, rather than attack my post. The sign of a weak man is the inability to address an issue, he has to resort to name calling and defamation instead. Tell me what value is added to the Senate by installing a hockey coach? | |

Posted: 8/29/2009 10:51:34 AM | There is method to his madness. Currently the liberals have had the upper hand as far the senate goes and because of this his desire for reform was unattainable till now.
These appointees are going in knowing their tenure will be shortlived. Now that there is an even number, legislation can be brought forth to actually pull it off.
Harper currently knows he can squeexe the bill pass the legislature and and will succeed in getting it passed by the senate.
These people will vote in harpers favour and gladly step aside if need be. | |

Harper has appointed 29 Senators. Chretiern appointed 75 of which 72 were Liberals. A few of which were hockey players.
Demers is not just a hockey coach and analyst. He is also fluently bilingual, a best selling author and an advocate for literacy. His qualifications certainly trump many already in the Senate.
You also say that Harper is uneducated. Again you show your ignorance. Harper's education is as follows:
BA - University of Calgary 1985
MA - University of Calgary 1991
That's a Bachelors degree and a Master's degree. Yeah right, uneducated.

So we would pay out less tax dollars and only have to deal with one set of bandits as out provincial government would become the federal government !
