mma(mixed martial arts) coming to Vancouver, what do you think?
Posted: 8/29/2009 1:55:26 PM
There was already that event the other week in Surrey or wherever it was, and now the MMA is coming to vancouver next year as I'm sure you've heard.

Do you think it will be a gathering place for gangs...do you think it'll be great for the city because it's a huge money maker...is it a bad influence for kids might go watch live rather than on tv?

What's you're opinion?

I don't live in Vancouver, am unlikely to be impacted by this decision, so don't really care much about it.

Who knows, perhaps having the MMA in Vancouver will inspire the hoodlums to exhibit more finesse when they attack their hapless victims or when engaging in their gang wars?

What exactly do you mean that "MMA is coming to vancouver". There's MMA fights in van all the time. Are you referring to the possible UFC in vancouver in june next year?

Why would it be a gathering place for gangs? Martha Stewart would probably draw more gangs.

For kids who watch they will see a sport where its competitors show each other more respect than in any other sport I've ever seen. Its violent, sure, but before and after the fight you'll see these guys doing things like bowing, shaking hands, hugging, even kissing each other on the cheek.

I do not personally watch this entertainment on television or attend them in person but remember seeing them years ago in Winnipeg. They were called "Tough Guy contests" and attracted the real deal tough guys usually from the North End. I attended one event when I rode motorcycle and remember one bad guy contestant kicking a few people in the audience through the ropes because they booed him for destroying his opponent.
I remember reading about a young father to be from Maple Ridge ( I think) who entered a contest hoping to win some prize money to put a down payment on a house or something like that. His opponent got him on the mat and delivered repeated punches to his kidneys to the extent that severe damage resulted. The number of blows were ridiculously high and the so called officials did not stop the fight. There was a picture in one or both of the Vancouver papers showing the young man and his wife in a hospital room suffering from kidney damage. This was many years ago but I always recalled the picture of the hospital room when I see ads for this event. Anyone remember this?

Gangs??
This reminds me of the 80's when politicians pointed fingers at heavy metal music saying it was satan's music

is it a bad influence for kids might go watch live rather than on tv?
ask this to the kids who have grown up watching wrestling

<--wrestling back in the day when wrestling was real

I have no problems with any type of contact sport as long as they respectfully treat it as a sport not pummel a man into a hospital as above mentions. That was just stupidity, taking this sport to an uncalled for level.

I'm just asking the question based on radio callers I heard and their concerns. One of the pros I heard is the moola it'll make for the city.

I am a lover, not a fighter.

I get no pleasure from violence, either participating in or watching it.

A fan of the Vancouver Canucks I enjoy NHL but don't enjoy the fights the teams engage in. I prefer a well-played game where fights do not interrupt the the flow of the game.

It causes some easiness to see how blood-thirsty and excited the attending fans get when a fight breaks out on the ice. In my opinion this is one of the less desirable attributes of our species.

Great Article by Michael Smythe in the province the other dy about this.

Shows the usual Nimby attitude by uninformed people.

UFC: Below-the-belt attitudes may prove costly
Vancouver will lose out if it takes cue from scaremongers
By Michael Smyth, The Province

A couple of weeks ago, the Vancouver Sun — and dozens of other newspapers across Canada — published a freelance editorial by former national team athlete Laura Robinson that thoroughly slimed the rising sport of mixed martial arts.

The combat sport — popularly known through the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) pay-per-view broadcasts — is considered the fastest-growing sport in North America, especially among young people who have flocked to the "octagon" as both fans and participants. Vancouver, in particular, is a UFC hotbed, with a huge number of pay-per-view buys and many growing amateur shows and clubs.

None of which impressed Robinson, a former Team Canada cyclist and rower, who argued that mixed martial arts was turning young boys into violent, bloodthirsty mini-monsters.

She offered as proof the "alarming increase in violent behaviour" among the boys she now coaches. She also cited scientific studies — completely unrelated to the sport — to prove UFC broadcasts are destroying the brains of impressionable children.

Always on the lookout for spirited talking points, the sharp-eyed producers at CKNW booked Robinson for a radio appearance, and I interviewed her live on the air.

I knew immediately that her scattershot opinions of UFC were driven strictly by her own personal bias, and not on any research into the sport itself.

How do I know that for sure? Because I asked what was the last UFC telecast she had watched.

"I've never seen it," came the unsurprising reply.

That's right, she is waging a national campaign against a sport she has never actually seen, live or on television. She admitted she had not watched UFC on TV a single time, yet she had been given a national platform to trash it.

This is sadly common with generational shifts in popular culture. And I think we're shooting ourselves in the wallet when we do it.

The dinosaurs at Vancouver City Hall also have a bias against UFC, which wants to stage a pay-per-view event at GM Place next year and has been getting little co-operation. In this economy, the politicians should be bending over backwards to bring this event to the city.

But as Vancouver waffles, they better be careful they don't get scooped by Victoria.

UFC officials held a productive meeting with B.C. Attorney-General Mike de Jong this week. "They're legitimate athletes participating in a legitimate sport and I think the fans should be allowed to come out and watch it," de Jong told me Thursday.

Beware, city hall: There's nothing to stop the provincial government from snatching regulatory authority away from you and scooping the UFC sanctioning fees for themselves.

"We may have to look at that," said de Jong. "The B.C. legislature actually reminds me a little of the octagon sometimes."

Actually, Mike, I'd say UFC is a lot more civilized. It's time to approve it in Vancouver and give the people what they want

Good point Draxx.
So many people try to influence popular opinion without adequate knowledge.

BTW, in my previous post

It causes some easiness to see how blood-thirsty and excited the attending fans get when a fight breaks out on the ice. In my opinion this is one of the less desirable attributes of our species.

Personally, I'd rather watch boxing.

These kind of matches are going to attract the monster-truck drag-racing gangster wanna-be, Thunderdome crowd and the women that love them. So what. Let the City take the money and hire more police.

So far as influencing kids, they see worse on the news everyday with the idiots already out there with their guns. Maybe this will encourage them to take some actual martial arts classes and get off their Wii-playing asses.

I don't really understand what MMA has to do with gangs, gangsters also attend concerts, plays, eat at restaurants and some even attend sunday services...are we going to ban all those activities. As far as I'm concerned,if MMA is good enough for Quebec, then I'm sure B.C. and Vancouver could also handle it haven't heard of crime increasing in Montreal because of the MMA event they had in january or february.
For those opposed to MMA,don't attend the fights or watch it on television.
Children are more interested in Wrestling, mainly due to the colorful characters and the storylines.MMA mainly attracts adults over 18,based sorely on my observations.....

I could quote the many people here that have no idea what the Sport of MMA is but, when your dealing with those that still believe in words like Tolerance and Intolerance, what's the point?

MMA, or specifically in this case, the UFC, has been putting up with the inane quasi "what about the children", dipshit crowd for years. They stood they're ground, and now are the fastest growing sport in the world, bar none.

It's simple really, these people are world class athletes that have trained for the better part of their lives, are mentors in their communities and adhere to a strict code of conduct, both enforced by themselves as well as, the companies they are employed by.

Yes this sport is violent, as are many others, but ultimately, it is their choice to participate, as it is our choice to watch.

I see and hear so many speak of the youth and how sports like this are a negative influence on them, yet are not so many parents that carry with them anger over the mundane happenings in this world the real cause of negativity?. I have seen many youth made better by contact sports, and as they rose in confidence they were eager for the oppertunity to challenge themselves against others, who all understood the risks.

Gangs?, fuck, they gather at your local 7-11, your childrens schools, malls, the only thing as parents we need to be afraid of is the other parents that resolved not to instill in their children values.

And I AM a fighter, AND a lover, but not a coward.

I'll be there, and I'll have a great time to.

hell ya.

It was the Romans who demonstrated first the usefulness of stupidity for state purpose.

Build big arenas, pack in the dummies and collect their earnings to watch even dumber ones beat themselves senseless to better yet kill themselves. Keeps them all busy and not noticing how poorly the country is run or better yet how the politicians get fatter every day.

Mind you, the Romans were a little brighter than we are today, they let their prisoners and criminals slug it out rather than feeding them for ever...sheesh there is extra $$$ in the state purse, great more to spend, build another Colosseum....

*rolls eyes

not this conversation again Mountain, please?

We are not the Romans, nor living in Roman times, so your argument is rendered moot.

<div class='quote'>just because we call ourselves human does not imply we act humane

By this logic you'll have us discussing words like "good", or "evil"

Logic can only be assigned by individuals, and yes, tho a part of me sees the beating of another human being quite illogical, sometimes giving to the beast within us all can be very um......

gratifying.

*cheers

it worked
it worked

he took the bait, there are some good ones left here....

I do agree with you we are not Romans and I disagree with you that the the beating of another human being quite illogical

on the Romans matter it would seem we have since taken a genetic decline and that is neither good nor evil, a pity perhaps a blessing as dumb ones have less to loose

on the the the beating of another human logic would have it to be the first response with the majority of them and that is neither good nor evil, its called education a long lost art.

The success of the UFC franchise is self evident. MMA events are physically demanding and sometimes bloody. It is a gladiator style competition ( sans weapons) between 2 willing, highly trained and skilled fighters.
Let those who wish to pay to see UFC in Vancouver have their fight night. Politicians and others who find UFC distasteful have no business imposing their views on others by censoring this event. If you don't like it, don't watch it.
Their is too much government interference in our daily lives now, IMO.
